Hello dear friends, I want to present my first commission of the year, the portrait of some little children who are little brothers, this week I was called to do it and I said yes. Although this was somewhat difficult since the reference photo was in black and white and the mother of the children wanted them to remain in color, the original photo had been deleted so there was only one left with a black and white filter . It was a great challenge so I decided to accept it, I will show you below how the process was.

Hola queridos amigos, quiero presentarles mi primera comisión del año, el retrato de unos pequeños niños que son hermanitos, esta semana fui llamado para hacerlo y pues dije que si. Aunque esto fue algo un poco difícil ya que la foto de referencia estaba en blanco y negro y la madre de los niños quería que ellos quedaran a color, la foto original se había borrado así que solo había quedado una con un filtro en blanco y negro. Fue un gran desafió así que decidí aceptarlo, les mostraré a continuación como fue el proceso.

PROCESS

I made the first sketch of the girl, who was very close to the photo and then the little boy, this time the cardboard I used was white opaline, this cardboard is very good but you have to be careful because it tends to stain easily , so you should use very hard pencils to make the sketches and then it is easy to erase.

Hice el boceto primero de la niña, que iba muy al costado de la foto y luego al pequeño niño, esta vez la cartulina que utilicé era Opalina de color blanco, esta cartulina es muy buena pero hay que ser cuidadoso porque tiende a mancharse con facilidad, así que se debe usar lápices de punta muy dura para hacer los bocetos y que luego sea fácil de borrar.

Here began the most difficult part trying to give a tone to the children's skin, as I personally know them I went little by little looking for the most suitable tone, so I started with a very soft pastel color, similar to peach and from there go little by little adding darker tones, this would be the base. Then I was adding colors like a very light ocher and then light brown, with the mixture of these three tones I worked on the entire face, when I had to put dark areas I did it with dark brown.

Aquí comenzó la parte mas difícil tratar de darle un tono a la piel de los niños, como yo los conozco personalmente fui poco a poco buscando el tono más adecuado, así que comencé con un color pastel muy suave, parecido al durazno y a partir de ahí ir poco a poco agregando tonos más oscuros, esto sería la base. Seguidamente fui agregando colores como un ocre muy claro y después café claro, con la mezcla de estos tres tonos fui trabajando todo el rostro, cuando había que poner zonas oscuras lo hice con café oscuro.

The next step was to apply the same tones that I explained before twice, until I had 3 layers, this is enough to give volume and color to the skin, I also painted the lips using a very light pink color, also helped with a little light brown , leaving clearly illuminated areas. For the eyes I used a black brown color, children have very expressive eyes so try to make and keep the brightness of their gaze well, respecting the obvious reflections of light. For the darker areas of the eyes I used black color and also a black permanent marker to outline.

El siguiente paso fue aplicar dos veces los mismos tonos que expliqué antes, hasta tener 3 capas, esto es suficiente para darle volumen y color a la piel, tambien pinté los labios utilizando un color rosa muy claro, ayudado tambien con un poco de café claro, dejando claramente zonas iluminadas. Para los ojos utilicé color café negro, los niños tienen ojos muy expresivos así que trate de hacer y conservar bien el brillo de su mirada, respetando los evidentes reflejos de luz. Para las zonas más oscuras de los ojos utilicé color negro y también un marcador permanente negro para delinear.

After having the face ready, I start to paint the hair, for that I use brown tones between light and dark, also an ocher color to have a contrast. Making quick strokes I am doing the hair little by little until I fill in the entire area, only when I have completed this step do I use the black color to give the colors more strength and outline better.

Despues de tener el rostro listo comienzo a pintar el cabello, para eso utilizo tonos café entre claro y oscuro, también un color ocre para tener un contraste. Haciendo trazos rápidos voy haciendo el cabello poco a poco hasta rellenar toda la zona, solo al haber completado este paso utilizo el color negro para darle más fuerza a los colores y delinear mejor.

The next step is to continue with the child's face, in this case I used the same method as above for the skin, carefully observing its position in the photograph, since as the drawing took shape I felt that it was looking very different, so I I carefully erased and started again. As'pi I was painting the eyes, the skin of the face and the mouth, finally I left the hair to later give both of them the most realistic effect.

El paso siguiente es continuar con el rostro del niño, en este caso utilicé el mismo método anterior para la piel, observando muy bien su posición en la fotografía ya que a medida que el dibujo iba tomando forma sentía que estaba quedando muy diferente, así que cuidadosamente iba borrando y comenzaba de nuevo. As´pi fui pintando los ojos, la piel del rostro y la boca, por último dejé el cabello para luego a ambos hacerle el efecto más realista.

Once I finished making the strokes in the hair of both children, with a soft brush I began to blur and mix all the tones. For the illuminated areas of the hair I used the white color to be able to make the reflections better. I also added part of the children's clothes as well as a background as it appeared in the photograph so that everything would not be seen in white, in this way the portrait was finished.

Una vez termine de hacer los trazos en el cabello de ambos niños, con un pincel suave comen´ce a difuminar y a mezclar todos los tonos. Para las zonas iluminadas del cabello utilicé el color blanco para poder hacer mejor los reflejos. También agregué parte de la ropa de los niños como también un fondo como salía en la fotografía para que no se viera todo en blanco, de esta manera quedó finalizado el retrato.

FINAL WORK

This was the final work after several adjustments to the portrait in terms of small details, I was satisfied, although as is always my custom, I would have loved to do more, although I did not know what else to add. The skin tone thing was a real challenge that I liked to face, I think these things are what help us to improve together with constant practice, and thus improve our skills. Este fue el trabajo final luego de varios retoques al retrato en cuanto a pequeños detalles, quedé satisfecho, aunque como siempre es costumbre en mi, me hubiera encantado hacer mas, aunque no sabía que más agregar. Lo del tono de la piel fue un verdadero desafío que me gustó enfrentar, creo que estas cosas son las que nos ayudan a mejorar junto a la práctica constante, y así mejorar nuestras habilidades.
