Nirvana Keychain, Hand-Carved in Wood [ENG-ESP]

Today I want to share with you a project brimming with nostalgia and a lot of sanding: a completely hand-carved wooden keychain, inspired by Nirvana's iconic "smiley face" logo. There's nothing quite like transforming a rustic piece of wood into an accessory that pays homage to one of rock's most influential bands. I invite you to join me on this visual journey, where I'll show you the detailed step-by-step process—from the first stroke along the grain to the final sealing touches—so you can see how patience and carving brought this little tribute to Kurt Cobain to life. Es un placer saludar a esta increíble comunidad donde el ingenio y las manos se unen para crear piezas únicas. Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes un proyecto cargado de nostalgia y mucha lija: un llavero tallado totalmente a mano en madera, inspirado en el icónico logo de la "carita feliz" de Nirvana. No hay nada como transformar un trozo de madera rústica en un accesorio que rinde homenaje a una de las bandas más influyentes del rock. Los invito a que me acompañen en este recorrido visual, donde les mostraré el paso a paso detallado —desde el primer trazo sobre la veta hasta los toques finales de sellado para que vean cómo la paciencia y el tallado dieron vida a este pequeño tributo a Kurt Cobain. ¡Espero que les guste y se animen a crear el suyo!

PROCESS

The wood I used is recycled; I took it from some old drawers because I really liked its reddish color. When I cut it, I saw that it was very smooth, so I knew it was the best to work with. However, as I was cutting the wood, I realized that it's very brittle, so you have to know how to work with it because it's easily damaged. What I did was cut a small piece, and then I made a sketch on paper to get an idea of ​​the size. Then I started drawing the smiley face on the wood with a pencil.

Esta madera que he utilizado es reciclada, la saqué de unas viejas gavetas porque me gustó mucho su color rojizo. Cuando la corté vi que era muy suave así que supe que era la mejor para trabajar, sin embargo cuando iba cortando la madera me di cuenta de que es muy quebradiza por lo que hay que saber trabajarla porque es fácil que se dañe. Lo que hice fue cortar un trozo pequeño, y luego hice un dibujo boceto en un papel para tener la idea del tamaño, así luego me puse a dibujar en la madera la carita feliz con lápiz.

Once I had the sketch done, I took the blades to score the entire drawing with the edge. My goal is to carve deep into the lines so that the expressions of the happy face stand out in relief. In this case, it would be the eyes and the mouth; you can see how I'm cutting along the entire line.

Una vez que hice el boceto tomé las cuchillas para marcar con el filo todo el dibujo, mi propósito es tallar hacia lo profundo y así las expresiones de la cara feliz quede en relieve. En este caso serían los ojos y también la boca, pueden observar como voy cortando todo el trazo.

I then began at the bottom, carving the wood little by little, without disturbing the shapes so they could remain in relief. As I said at the beginning, this wood is brittle, so the movement of the knife must be very slow, no rushing, as it's easy to ruin the work.

Comencé entonces por la parte inferior para ir tallando la madera poco a poco, sin interferir en las formas para que puedan quedar en relieve. Como dije al principio esta madera es quebradiza por lo que el movimiento de la cuchilla debe ser muy lento, nada de prisa, ya que es fácil que el trabajo se pierda.

Then, little by little, I cut the wood on the other side, and the shape of the face began to take shape. One of the most difficult parts to carve was the eyes, as their shape wasn't easy. Since they were a pair of X's, the ends got damaged a bit, but I managed to finish them in the end. To achieve that, I changed the blades because the tips are for different purposes.

Luego poco a poco voy cortando la madera del otro lado, y sí va quedando la forma del rostro, unas de las partes que se me hizo más dificil e tallar fueron los ojos, ya que la forma no era fácil. Al ser un par de X, los extremos se estropearon un poco, pero al final pude hacerlos, para alcanzar eso cambiaba las cuchillas ya que las puntas son para diferentes propósitos.

After fine-tuning a few minor details, I then began cutting the edges of the entire piece to give it the shape of the head. I did it this way so that the center wouldn't lose strength in the wood as it lost density.

Luego de afinar unos pequeños detalles comencé entonces a cortar los bordes de la pieza completa para darle la forma de la cabeza. Lo hice de esta manera para que cel centro no perdiera fuerza en la madera mientras perdía la densidad.

After finishing most of the carving, I took 180-grit sandpaper and began cleaning and polishing the entire piece. Then the piece was ready for a glossy sealant varnish, and this is how it was finished.

Después de haber terminar la mayor parte del tallado tomé una lija de 180 gramos y comencé a limpiar y pulir toda la pieza. Así ya la pieza estaba lista para ponerle barniz sellador brillante y así quedó finalizado.

What did you think of the result? It's undoubtedly a piece that evokes the best days of rock, especially alternative rock. Nirvana was a band that changed everything, from the day this album dethroned none other than Michael Jackson from the top spot.
