#DIY2025 Painting the Facade of My House [ENG-ESP]

Hello dear friends of DIY Hub, I hope you are all doing well. This time, I wanted to share this post with you to participate in the last contest of the year. Since the theme is open, I wanted to share with you how I painted the exterior facade of my house. I'll tell you what I did, what kind of paints I used, and the process I followed. The exterior walls are quite long, measuring around 20 meters and 2 meters high, while the interior wall of my house is over 3 meters high. Here's a brief explanation of how I did it; I hope you like it.

Hola queridos amigos de DiyHub, espero que todos se encuentren muy bien, en esta oportunidad quiero compartir con ustedes esta publicación para participar en el último concurso del año, como el tema es libre pues yo quiero compartir con ustedes como fue que pinté la fachada exterior de mi casa. Quiero comentarles qué hice, qué tipo de pinturas utilicé y como fue el proceso que llevé a cabo para poder pintar, las paredes exteriores son algo largas, miden alrededor de 20 metros, con 2 metros de altura, mientras que la pared interior de mi casa tiene más de 3 metros de altura, aquí les comentaré brevemente como lo hice, espero les guste.

PROCESS

To give you some context, the last time I painted was three years ago, and the paint was already deteriorating. In Venezuela, it's not easy to paint every year because of the high cost of paint, so I let the old paint reach its maximum lifespan before replacing it. As you can see, the paint was peeling off in many parts of the wall, revealing the layers of paint that had been applied in previous years. So, the first thing I did was try to remove at least the last layer of paint so I could apply the new one and get a better finish.

Para ponerlos en contexto, la última vez que pinté fue hace 3 años y la pintura ya estaba deteriorada, en Venezuela no es fácil pintar cada año por el costo elevado las pinturas, así que dejé que la pintura alcanzara su máximo nivel de utilidad para reemplazarla. Como pueden observar, la pintura se estaba cayendo en muchas partes de la pared, lo que hacía ver el resto de pinturas que se habían echado en años anteriores. Así que lo primero que hice fue tratar de quitar al menos la última capa de pintura para así poner la nueva y el acabado fuera un poco mejor.

First, I prepare my tool, and it's not a brush, but quite the opposite: a spatula. With this spatula, I'm going to remove as much of the old paint as possible from the wall, but before that, since it's a bit old, I sharpen the tip of the spatula with a file. This removes the rust, making the tip easier to use for removing most of the old paint.

En primero lugar preparo mi herramienta, y no se trata de una brocha, sino todo lo contrario, una espátula. Con esta espátula voy a retirar la mayor cantidad de pintura vieja de la pared, pero antes de eso, como está un poco vieja lo que hago es afilar un poco la punta de la espátula con una lima, así le quito el óxido y la punta queda mejor para retirar la mayor parte de la pintura vieja.

Now, let's get to work! I used a ladder to reach the highest points of the wall, which, as I mentioned before, is over 3 meters high. So, with the spatula, I started removing all the paint from that upper section. To protect myself from the sun, I wore a cowboy hat (hehe), sunglasses, and a mask. The sun was very strong, and when paint is removed, the dust can cause allergies, so the mask protected me well.

Ahora, manos a la obra! Utilicé una escalera para llegar a los puntos más altos de la pared, que como había comentado antes tiene una altura de más de 3 metros, así que con la espátula comencé a retirar toda la pintura en esa parte de arriba. Par a protegerme del sol utilicé un sombrero de vaquero jejeje, lentes de sol y mascarilla, el sol estaba muy fuerte y la pintura cuando se retira el polvo del tiempo puede causar alergias, así que con está mascarilla me protegí muy bien.

I continued along the entire wall until I finished every corner. Once I finished the main wall, I then began removing the paint from the wall facing the street. This wall is much longer, as it includes a section beyond the garage door, but I did it at full speed because the midday sun was already catching up with me and it was unbearable.

Seguí por toda la pared hasta finalizar cada rincón, una vez que terminé cpn la pared principal, entonces comencé a quitar la pintura de la pared de la fachada hacia la calle, esta pared es mucho más larga ya que incluye un tramo más luego del portón del garage pero lo hice atoda velocidad porque el sol de medio día ya me estaba alcanzando y era insoportable.

Then I prepared the paints. I had three different shades, and I tested each one on the wall to choose the one I liked best. In the end, I used one called Mediterranean Blue. It's a very strong blue, so I used a softer shade to lighten it a bit. Another paint color I had was a bluish-gray, but I decided to save that one for the larger wall. I think the two colors will create a nice contrast when viewed from the street.

Luego preparé las pinturas, tenía 3 tonos diferentes y cada uno los probé en la pared y así elegir cual me gustaba más, al final utilicé uno que se lla Azul Mediterráneo, es un azul muy fuerte, por lo que utilizando otro tono más suave pude aclararlo un poco. Otro tono de pintura que tenía es uno gris azulado pero este tomá la desición de dejarlo para la pared más grande, creo que harán un buen contraste ambos colores cuando se observen desde la calle.

In the afternoon the sun was stronger, so I put on a little more sun protection, hehe. I started painting the longer wall facing the street, so I figured I'd start with the most difficult part and leave the other wall for later. There's a section of the wall that's a bit rustic, so I started painting there, covering most of it with the brush. Then I painted the rest until I finished the first coat.

En horas de la tarde ya el sol estaba más fuerte así que me protegí un poco más jejeje, comencé a pintar la pared de la calle que es más largas, así que al comenzar por lo más dificil dejaría la otra pared para después. Hay una parte de la pared que es un poco rustica y comencé a pintar por ahí, hasta cubrir toda la mayor parte con la brocha, así luego fui pintando el restto hasta terminar la primera capa de pintura.

Although the paint was quick-drying, I decided to wait at least two hours for the first coat to dry completely before applying the second. Before doing so, I carefully examined the wall and realized that the coverage wasn't perfect, so I made the second coat thicker for better coverage. Also, I had a coworker who seemed more like my boss than a colleague, as she kept a close eye on me to make sure I did my job.

Aunque la pintura es de secado rápido decidí esperar al menos dos horas para que la primera capa estuviera bien secada y así comenzar aplicar la segunda. Antes de hacerlo examiné muy bien la pared y me di cuenta que el cubrimiento no fue total por lo que la segunda capa de pintura la hice más espesa para que el cubrimiento fuera mejor. Ademas, tenía a una cumpañera que más que compañera parecía mi jefe, ya que no dejaba de vigilar que hiciera mi trabajo.

FINAL WORK

Another detail I added was painting the bases and corners with white paint to make them stand out. However, I still need to paint the doors and the large garage door, but I'll do that with the help of a gas compressor since I'll be using oil paint. As for the wall further inside my house, I need to do some repairs and choose a different shade of blue. I don't want them to be the same; I want a contrast between them. Maybe a lighter blue, or perhaps a bluish-gray. That's all for now. It was hard work that took me all day, but I managed to finish it. Otro detalle que hice fue pintar las bases y las esquinas con pintura blanca para que resaltaran, sin embargo aun me quedan por pintar las puertas y también el grna portón del garage, pero esto lo haré con la ayuda de un compresor de gas ya que utilizaré pintura en óleo para tal fin. En cuanto a la pared que está luego dentro de mi casa, debo hacerle otras reparaciones y elegír otro tono de azul, no quiero que sena iguales sino que haya un contraste entre ambas, tal vez sea un azul más claro, o también un gris azulado. Por ahora esto ha sido todo, fue un trabajo arduo que me llevó todo el día pero logre hacerlo, pronto será navidad así que con anticipación les deseo una feliz noche buena.
