"Small Moments" - Musical Earrings Carved in Wood [ENG-ESP]

Musical notes are magnificent, and if we think about it carefully, we can see life differently through them. If a whole note represents a lifetime and a quarter note the passage of years, the sixteenth note represents those fleeting moments we often overlook, yet which define the very fabric of our existence. Sometimes we expect "long notes" from life, forgetting that life is made up of those brief moments that can change our destiny. This is how I see this creation, destined to belong to my daughter, like all my previous works. These small sixteenth notes are carved from mahogany-colored wood, which, when varnished, becomes beautiful and glossy. Here I will show you a simple method for doing so, and I hope you will share it with someone else. Let's begin!

Las notas musicales son grandiosas y si lo pensamos muy bien, a través de ellas podríamos ver la vida de forma diferente. Si la redonda es una vida entera y la negra es el paso de los años, la semicorchea representa esos instantes que solemos pasar por alto por ser demasiado breves, pero que definen la textura de nuestra existencia. Algunas veces esperamos de la vida "notas largas" sin olvidar de que la vida se compone de esos breves instantes que pueden cambiar nuestro destino, así es como veo esta creación destinada a pertenecer a mi hija, como todos mis anteriores trabajos. Estas pequeñas semicorcheas están talladas en madera de color caoba el cual del barniz queda muy hermoso y brillante aquí les mostraré un método sencillo para hacerlo y así compartirlo con alguien más, comencemos!

PROCESS

Since these are very small earrings, the wood used shouldn't be too thick; about 3 millimeters is sufficient, and the piece should be large enough to cut two earrings. I made a sketch on paper to ensure the drawing was exactly the same size so that each piece would fit perfectly. After drawing the two earrings, I separated them with a saw to begin carving each one individually.

Como se trata de unos aretes muy pequeños, la madera a utilizar no debe tener un grosor muy amplio, bastan unos 3 milímetros suficientes, y el tamaño de la madera debe ser el suficiente para sacar dos piezas. Aquí yo hice un boceto sobre papel para hacer el dibujo exactamente del mismo tamaño y que al finalizar cada pieza quede bien. Luego de dibujar los dos aretes los separo con una sierra para comenzar a tallar poco a poco cada uno.

To begin carving the first piece, I only need to lightly trim the edges, but without shaping it yet; I just need to remove some of the excess wood. A utility knife is sufficient for this, as its blade is wider and allows me to cut larger pieces of wood.

Para comenzar a tallar la primera de las piezas solo debo rebajar un poco lor bordes pero aun sin darle forma, solamente es quitar un poco la madera sobrante. Para hacerlo, con utilizar una navaja de papelería es suficiente ya que la hoja es mas ancha y permite cortar más porciones de madera.

Next, I change tools and use more precise ones for the small cuts. Here, I use gouges with the type of tip shown in the image. One tip is used to make the cut along the line, and the other removes the wood, leaving only the previously made cut. Here, I begin by making a small opening. This opening allows the two brackets that connect the two notes, like a bridge, to be seen.

Seguidamente cambio de herramientas y utilizo unas más precisas para los pequeños cortes, aquí utilizo las gubias las cuales tienen el tipo de punta que aparece en la imagen. Una punta sirve para hacer el corte siguiendo el trazo y con la otra se puede ir sacanda la madera y que solo quede el corte que se hizo anteriormente. Aquí comienzo haciendo una pequeña abertura, esa abertura permite que se vean los dos corchetes que unen ambas notas como un puente.

After that I go to the part of the symbol, where the notes take their round shape, here you can see how using the pointed gouge I mark the stroke to then with the square blade cut all that space, trying to leave that space without any wood.

Después de eso voy hacia la parte del símbolo, donde las notas cobran su forma redonda, aquí pueden ver como utilizando la gubia puntiaguda voy marcando el trazo para depsués con la hojilla cuadrada cortar todo ese espacio, tratando de dejar ese espacio sin nada de madera.

After that, only a small piece of wood remains on the front, which we can easily remove with the craft knife. Once this piece of wood is removed, we can see the shape of this musical note. To give it a better finish, we cut a small piece of sandpaper to run through the opening in the middle. Then, with a coarser grit of sandpaper, we clean and polish the piece until it is very smooth to the touch.

Luego de eso, solo queda un pequeño trozo de madera en la parte frontal que facilmente podemos quitar con el cúter, una vez quitado este pedazo de madera podemos apreciar la figura d esta nota musical. Para darle un mejor acabado cortamos un pequeño trozo de lija para pasarla por la abertura del medio, luego con una lija más grande limpiamos y pulimos la pieza hasta dejarla muy suave al tacto.

Next, I made the remaining piece, following the same step-by-step process. After both pieces were clean and polished, I applied a glossy varnish and finally the metal rings. And that's how they were finished.

Seguidamente hago la pieza que falta, con el mismo proceso hecho hasta ahora paso a paso. Después de que ambas piezas estuvieran limpias y pulidas les puse barniz brillante y por último los aros de metal. De esta forma quedaron finalizados.

FINAL WORK

What did you think of the final result? A melody without sixteenth notes would be flat and monotonous. Life shines in the fleeting details: a shared smile in the elevator, the smell of coffee in the morning, or a passing thought. Have you ever considered such details?
