Spartan Helmet Wooden Carved Keychain [ENG-ESP]

Hello dear friends, I hope you are all doing well and had a good Sunday. For me, it's almost a tradition to post on this day; it's my last day off before going back to school. This time, it's not a drawing, but a piece carved in wood. I've made a Spartan helmet, one of the most important parts of the battle armor of the ancient Spartan soldiers. It's well known that these warriors were the most disciplined in ancient Greece and were immortalized in the movie 300. The Spartan helmet is one of the most recognizable because it had a large plume of horsehair on top that made it very intimidating and also covered most of the face, barely revealing the eyes. I've made this helmet as a keychain on a small piece of wood, which I'll show you step by step below. I hope you like it.

Hola queridos amigos, espero que todos se encuentren muy bien y hayan pasado un buen día domingo. Para mía ya es casi una tradición poder publicar este día, es mi último día de descanso antes de regresar a clases. En esta oportunidad no se trata de un dibujo, sino de una pieza tallada en madera. He realizado un casco espartano, una de las partes más importantes de la armadura de batalla de los antiguos soldados de Esparta, es muy bien sabido que estos guerreros eran los más disciplinados de la antigua Grecia y fueron inmortalizados en la película 300. El casco espartano es uno de los más reconocidos ya que tenía un gran penacho de pelo de caballo en la parte superior que lo hacía muy intimidante y que también cubrían la mayor parte del rostro, donde a penas se podían ver los ojos. He realizado este casco en forma de llavero en una pequeña pieza de madera, la cual voy a presentar a continuación paso a paso, espero que les guste.

I took a piece of wood measuring 3 centimeters on each side and cleaned it thoroughly, removing any damaged or poorly cut parts to make the surface as smooth as possible. Instead of creating the silhouette directly, I sketched the helmet shape on paper to use as a template. This allowed me to cover most of the wood without distorting the helmet's form.

Tomé una pieza de madera que mide 3 centímetros por cada uno de sus lados, limpié la madera muy bien, quitando las partes dañadas y mal cortadas para dejar la superficie lo más lisa posible. Para hacer la silueta no la hice directamente, sino que hice el boceto del casco en un papel para utilizarlo como plantilla, esto lo hice así para abarcar la mayor parte de la madera sin que el casco perdiera la forma

Once I have the piece ready to carve, I start working on the top, where the plume is. Here, the cut follows a curved line. I use a thicker knife blade to gradually remove all the excess wood from this edge. You can see how the piece looks in this particular area.

Una vez que ya tengo la pieza lista para tallar, lo que hago es ir trabajando por la parte superior, donde está el penacho, aquí el corte obedece a una linea curva. Utilizo una hojilla más gruesa de una navaja para ir poco a poco retirando toda la madera que sobra en este borde. Pueden visualizar como queda toda la pieza en esta parte en especial.

The next cut is between the back of the helmet and the end of the plume. This cut isn't easy because the space is very narrow. For this part, I use a smaller blade with a triangular tip so I can remove all the wood. You can see how the space is becoming completely reduced and wood-free.

El siguiente corte va entre la parte posterior del casco y el final del penacho, este corte no es nada fácil ya que el espacio es muy estrecho. Para esta parte utilizo una cuchilla más pequeña pero con la punta estilo triangulo para poder ir sacando toda la madera. Pueden ver como va quedando el espacio reducido completamente tallado sin madera.

Next, I begin working on the area where the Spartan warriors' ears would have been exposed. It's a small cut very similar to the one I made previously, and to make it look neater, I use a saw at the end to remove most of the wood.

Seguidamente, comienzo a hacer toda la parte por donde los oídos de los guerreros espartanos quedaban descubiertos. Es un pequeño corte muy similar al que se hizo anteriormente, para que quede mejor, al final utilizo una sierra para que la mayor parte de la madera sea retirada.

Next, the front is shaped; this is where the helmet takes its final form. An important step is creating the vent through which vision is gained, completing the Spartan helmet's shape.

Luego se le va dando forma en la parte frontal, aquí el casco termina de tomar forma de una manera completa. Un paso importante es hacer la abertura por donde la visión obtiene su espacio, esto termina de darle la forma al casco espartano.

Finally, there are a few points to consider regarding the interior of the helmet, which involves making small decorations, carved with great patience and in very small spaces. You can see how the small headband is coming along, and also at the base of the plume, I'm making some touches with the knife to give it a better finish.

Para finalizar hay algunos puntos a considerar al interior del casco, el cual se trata de hacer unos pequeños adornos, tallados con mucha paciencia y por espacios muy pequeños. Pueden observar como va quedando el pequeño cintillo, tambien en la base del penacho, le hago algunos toques con la navaja para darle un mejor acabado.

Another important detail is that I made small cuts in the plume to simulate horsehair; you can zoom in and see it. What do you think of the result? A little more and it would have looked like the helmet of the legendary King Leonidas, hehe. I hope you liked it; it's been a great pleasure to work with wood again after so long. Otro detalle importante es que hice pequeños cortes en el penacho para simular el cabello de caballo, pueden hacer zoom y podrán observarlo. ¿Qué les ha parecido el resultado? un poco más y habría quedado como el casco del legendario rey Leónidas jejeje.
