Perfect combination: Lettuce, onions and tomatoes in your garden.

Hello Hive friends, today is Monday and I hope you had a nice weekend with your loved ones.
On Mondays I publish things a little different than usual and as you can see that my articles on horticulture and gardening have helped some, I will continue giving my modest knowledge on the subject.

Today I wanted to talk to you about another combination of plants that works really well to make the most of the space and get very tasty fruits. It is one of the Mediterranean combinations par excellence. Plant lettuce, onion and tomatoes together.

Of course, first you have to prepare the ground properly. Although I am not a big fan of plowing the garden, in this case we would do a deep plowing, about 20 cm. Afterwards we would add some compost that we prepared ourselves but that is well decomposed. If it is worm castings even better.

Now it's time to plant. First we would plant the onions that are the basis of the health of our combination. We would plant them in a zigzag pattern to have the greatest effect. Then we would plant the lettuce. We would choose a variety that does not bud, such as oak leaf. We would place a protection at the beginning like a bottle cut in half, don't forget to make a hole so it doesn't condense. With this we manage to protect it from predators but also make it grow upward and compact.
Finally we would plant the tomatoes that, with their bushy growth, would provide shade for the lettuce.

Why does this combination of plants work well and also gives us superior performance in a small space?
Onions, with their fungicidal and insecticidal effect, help their companions stay healthy and also improve their flavor.
Lettuces do not compete for nutrients and with their leaves they create a freshness that especially helps the tomatoes by avoiding cracking and reducing watering.
Tomatoes protect lettuce from direct sun and since their roots are deep, they draw nutrients from deeper layers of the earth to make them available to the rest. Tomato leaves also release a product that prevents lettuce leafminers. That smell is unpleasant for moths that do not lay their eggs in them.

Well I hope it has been useful. Plant your vegetables, enjoy them and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Thank you very much for supporting my blog and I look forward to your comments.!
