Learning experience THEN and NOW

I like the operation of the school settings when I was in school then than the operational settings in schools now. Students have parents to take care of their needs even with farming, fishing and other menial jobs but now reverse is the case. Students are the ones feeding their parents 🤔
I remembered, we were not permitted to learn any skill while schooling, all we did was school, school and school but now, majority of the students nowadays are into one job or the other. No parental care🤔

Schooling then, there was no means of technology, everything was done manually from going to school with either bicycle or you walk with your legs to school every day. So, this make the bond of building relationships with others became so easy and there were discipline at every corner from home to school and to the community. No students dares any teacher during our time but now reverse is the case.

I remembered when I was in secondary school, our maths teacher would give us assignment that we won't be able to finish before sunset and you dare not come to school without the assignment and you must not be absent in the school. What about other teachers, a minute late to their classes, your buttocks would be hurt.

During the school then, no student must come to school 8 O'clock in the morning, that means your cane is waiting for you. No student must be seen outside during school hours, no student must be caught fighting with the school uniforms, no student must be rude to the least of ranking teachers in the school, no parent has the mind to fight the teachers for discipline their child, no student must be found wanting or else expulsion, suspension, punishment or beating would be your lots.

Schooling then, we used lantern and candles to read and we formed group reading among ourselves. This was the period when the students has the mind of reading and knowing the reason for coming to school. We challenged ourselves on subject topics, we would go extra lessons just for us to pass our tests or examinations but now, they don't care. It's even the teachers that will be dragging them for test or examination 🤔🤔

Being a student was so full of fun despite the discipline in place then, we had so many activities such as literary week where there was inter school competitions, quiz and debating, music and drama, miming and expression and so on. It was fun going to school because every student want to be the best. I met my very good friend who turned to be my chief bridesmaid during inter school competitions. We are still friends till today, friends of about 22years ago 🤣🤣 We enjoyed painting our black board with used battery and water when it's becoming white🤣

One good thing that I cherished so much in school then was the act of DISCIPLINE IN USE but this discipline is no more in our school settings especially here in Nigeria. It's so wrong for students to beat up teachers to stupor even having the mind of killing teachers who are correcting them for doing wrong. Teaching job is no longer safe with the kind of generations that we have today🤔 They even said and I quote school is a scam

However, one good thing for students of nowadays that was not in place before is the ACCESSIBILITY OF INFORMATION AND RESOURCES THROUGH INTERNET. Back in those days, students had limited access to informations, materials, books, and other materials. They relied primarily on libraries and physical resources. There was nothing like Computer or other ICT gadgets. Most parents could not afford any gadget even when the use of mobile phones came in existence.

I got my first mobile phone while I was in 200level in the university. I had no access to internet let alone getting informations from the internet. Using cyber Cafe then was no where affordable by many students. However, students of nowadays have every opportunities to surf the internet for knowledge
and information at their fingertips easily.

To address the disparities, the advancement of technology is as a result of development, civilization and growth and this type of exposure cannot be ruled out. I think, Schools should focus on organizing events, extra-curricular activities, and team-building exercises that can encourage sense of community interaction and collaboration.

Also, teachers should be provided technological tools for effective teaching to enhance the quality of education. What they see they remember!

Qualified and experienced teachers should be employed to teach maximum of two classes not overloading a teacher with (1,600 students) to teach at a go.

Government should allow the teachers to do their jobs as expected. They should bring back discipline with moderation into the school system.

Employers should put teachers first in whatever budget and they should be given optimum priority.

Parent should stop the habit of you are old enough to take care of yourself thereby exposing their children to so many fraudulent acts.

Parents should get fully involved into their children's life, monitor and guide them through school, social media and every other online activities they do.

Students should not see school as a waste of time.
Students should not replace the physical classrooms to a virtual classrooms.
