Binance former CEO CZ launches a free educational project

Introduction

The former CEO and co-founder of Binance Changpeng Zhao recently made a post on X announcing a brand new project. It is a free online educational program that was designed to assist students in developing economies to access quality education. The project is called Giggle Academy. CZ hopes to make a great impact on the life of children in lower economies who are unable to afford to go to school.

At the initial announcement, the Binance former head did not give out much details about the project. However, he did provide details in subsequent X post. Interestingly, Giggle Academy webite is live and you can also learn more about the project from the concept paper. In this presentation, I want to highlight some features of this project and why it could be so much welcome development.

Giggle Academy - an Overview.

The world has quite a high number of people that are not literate because they could not afford to go to school. There are more than 700 million of such people and they are often found in developing economies like those in Asia and Africa.

The ultimate goal of Giggle Academy is to give this illiterate population another chance to acquire knowledge and become well-informed. This program is completely free in order to over come the challenge of lack of funds. Below is the mission of the project as expressed by CZ:

Building a high-quality and sticky education platform that is entirely free and accessible to all is the most impactful thing I could do for the next chapter of my life. source

The project is designed to provide sound and qualitative education through curricula designed to adapt to the demands of modern society. The project will focus its educational material to students in grade 1-12.

Giggle academy will deviate a lot from the traditional approach to formal education which is often rigid and does not often prepare students to succeed in many aspects of life. In order to achieve its goal of equipping students with all the skills needed to navigate modern life successfully, the next paragraph outlines the core principles of Giggle academy.

Giggle academy introduces a dynamic learning approach.

Giggle academy should be able to achieve its objective by not doing business as usual. Here are the 3 ways they want to be different from our traditional classroom education:

• Gamified learning: The academy will ensure that students enjoy every step and aspect of the learning process. When students have fun while learning, they want to keep on learning and developing. The academy will achieve this by working with expert instructors from around the world who will develop the best learning practices and materials for the student.

Another aspect of the learning gamification is providing rewards for each achievement made. Students would earn points and badges for completing courses. This encourages them to put more effort and earn more recognition for their work in the classroom.

The learning process will be allowed to flow naturally. So there will probably be no fixed time for students to move to the next level or class. Once they have demonstrated sufficient mastery of a particular course, they will be prompted to move to the next level irrespective of time.

• Specialize on strengths: The academy will try to direct students towards subjects or courses that they already excel in. Todays traditional school systems often try to work on the students weak areas. But Giggle academy understands that student might have natural skills and talents. If a student is good in drawing and painting, they will naturally be asked to focus more in art courses. This is a way to bring out the best in what something they already excel in or have passion for.

Adapting the curriculum to the strength of each participant is a great way to train them to be experts in that field. So instead of presenting the instructional courses to the class, each student would received personalized education based on their strength. At the end of the day, they are able to develop their specialization area and be more productive there if they graduate from the academy.

• Capacity development: The primary goal of Giggle academy to help students develop in whatever areas they specialize in. This will prepare them to join that sector after graduation and have the necessary knowledge and skills needed to excel. Thus, the curriculum is not designed to pass head knowledge to students and give them a certificate upon graduation. Instead, it aims at creating the capacity in students needed to excel in their chosen field.

Giggle academy will be grading students based on points and badges obtained. Each rating represents excellence in a particular skillset. If a student got a particular badge, it serves as evidence that they have completed the course and did well. The academy will store the badges on the blockchain. Employers can verify the expertise of the student for a potential role when they go job-hunting in the future. The use of blockchain for certification will ensure that the true identity, expertise and specialization of each individual is preserved and accessible and tamper-proof.
