It is doubtlessly more profitable to run your business as an entrepreneur with your family members, but it is more dangerous to do so when the family members are not honest with the business that you entrust with, that is why you have to be sensitive and observant as an entrepreneur to the when it is right and when it is not right to bring in your family members into your business.

The truth is that no matter how business minded a family is, it is not every family member that should be recruited into the family's business as doing so may have great consequences on the business.

I will be drawing illustrations for this post from two experiences that happened around me recently. The first is an incident that happened to my brother in his business.

Here in our hometown in Nigeria, my brother runs a POS business. POS in Nigeria will have a different meaning entirely from what is obtainable in developed parts of the world. Apart from being a machine that facilitates payment in business, here in Nigeria, POS is also a business on its own.

So, because of how frequent he travels due to the nature of his job, he employs one of our closest relative, a cousin, who stays with us to manage the business for him, whether or not my brother is around. He employed her because he thought that she will be more honest with the business since she was our family member. Of course, everyone believes so and would have done the same if they were in my brother's shoes.

It is a common and a general believe that if anyone should be sympathetic and empathetic towards another person, it has to be someone who comes from the same family with that person first. A family member is supposed to be more considerate than an outsider.

But as it turned out, my brother recorded the greatest loss in his business while she worked for him, much more than he had ever had since he started the business. His business would have completely crumbled if not for his timely detection and intervention.

Of recent, I noticed that one of my friends who has been a dedicated entrepreneur for some years now was no longer consistent in her business as she used to be, so I decided to reach out to her to know why she suddenly became inconsistent in her business overnight. And, as I found out, she had the same experience my brother had- her elder brother who lives a wasteful life had squandered her business capital.

NOW, HERE ARE SOME GREEATB LESSONS TO DEDUCE FROM THIS STORY:

📌 No matter how much you love your family members, you must be sensitive and discerning to know which of them you should bring into your business and the one you should not. Sometimes, getting your family members involved in your business can be disastrous, depending on the kind of family you come from. this is the more reason why you have to be discerning as an entrepreneur.

📌You must learn never to mix emotion with business because failure to do this will bring you to your knees as an entrepreneur. As an entrepreneur, you must learn how to place family and business in their respective places.
