A month and a half ago, I lost my best friend. Iâve been feeling terrible, sad, and completely down. Iâve tried everything to feel better, but nothing has worked. How can I get over the end of a great friendship?
The thing is, there are circumstances in life that completely change us. This time, I lost someone I love very much due to circumstances completely beyond our control, and I find comfort in the fact that I didnât do anything wrongânor did she to me. Maybe it just wasnât the right time, and I donât know how to explain the situation, which is somewhatâor veryâpersonal. What I can explain, though, is the grief Iâm going through because of her absence from my life, and knowing that sheâs also having a hard time brings me some reliefâon one hand, because I know our bond remains intactâand it breaks my heart because I know thereâs nothing I can do to help.

I carry a scar that hasnât healed; being suddenly separated from her has affected my days, my hours, my seconds, and every aspect of my daily life.
We were inseparableâshe and I, through thick and thinâand she will always remain within me, in my heart and in my soul. Even though I miss her every day of my life, Iâm trying to hold on to the idea, the dream, or the hope that someday weâll run into each other on the street and hug each other so tightly that we wonât think about the time we were apart.
I wish it had been that way, I wish weâd had more time, I wishâbut those moments that never existed remain just âI wishes.â Instead, Iâll give the best place in my heart to my memories with herâthe ones that made me happy. To the whole days when it was just the two of us in my room, not talking, not doing anything; the times we cooked up a made-up recipe, tried on clothes, or put on makeup. Eating our favorite snacks or talking about the same topic every day.

Iâll never forget those anxious afternoons with the keys in my hand, waiting for her to arrive at my house, or the way I gradually convinced her that hugs could healâand then sheâd come running into my arms all on her own. Just as my afternoons feel a little emptier every day, I remember her when Iâd go for a walk and sheâd come along to keep me company, or when Iâd go shopping and sheâd come with me, or when I needed an opinion and would call her for a few seconds.
I have so many memories that come flooding back all at once, like a plane in the middle of turbulence; I feel like s***âthis friendship has really hit me harder than any other ever has.
She became my other half, my little piece of love, that friend with whom I realized that time doesnât matter when the feeling is so strong. That friend with whom I talked about my darkest fears and terrors, and with whom I laughed so hard that I didnât care if the whole block could hear me. The one who was my shoulder to lean on, my brain, and my shoulder to cry onâall while also being my cook, my best friend, and my partner.
I didnât want to go on so long, but grief is a strange thingâthere are days when you think youâre back to 100%, and then you relapse; I donât think Iâll ever get over it.

A few days ago, I had a very sad experience because I thought Iâd lost the keychain she gave me. Iâd had it hanging from my purse, and when I arrived somewhere, it was just gone, so first I started crying, and then I went around asking at different stores to see if they had it in stockâsince it was a very pretty and distinctive unicornâbut they didnât have it. When I got home feeling sad, I saw it; it had fallen out before I left, so I decided to put it on a shelf to keep it safer.
Itâs the last tangible thing I have from her, and itâs not that I donât keep my memories or photosâitâs just that she chose that one for me, and she bought one just like it for herself.
In the end, Iâm going to sleep with a heavy heart, hoping that somedayâor in another lifeâwe can be friends again, but this time, forever.
In the end, I always go to bed wondering what he would say if I told him this or that, or what advice he would give me, or what crazy thing he might say, or if I told him everything thatâs happened to me... But like everything else, we get used to itâIâve always been alone, and in the end, I always end up alone again.
