An old-fashioned question

IMG_2401.jpg

The 1st of May is the day to get out in the fields and cut flowers. At least that's what our traditions tell us to do. But we did that last week and with a much nicer weather, I might add!

Nevertheless I don't want to be the party pooper so I took a few shots of flowers to honour the tradition and to offer to you, as my new month wishes :)

I didn't go out in the fields though, just a stroll around the neighbourhood and the flowers on the sidewalks and the house's gardens.

And a few irrelevant pictures of the town, just to point out the surrounding context of those blooming :)

Edibles and flowers are all there to please our senses and decorate the concrete constructions that we are calling homes. That kitty below doesn't seem to relate to my admiration though. She just looks annoyed by me, intruding her privacy :)

The citrus fruits are the strong suit of the area. There are thousands of trees around the town but even in the streets and in almost every garden! And the smell of their blossoms this time of the year, is just breathtaking!

As I was taking the pictures an old lady talked to me from her balcony, proudly presenting a blooming bush in her garden. She had planted it many years ago, from a cutting that she brought from her village. And I could see her eyes sparkling as she was describing the original plant that she took the cutting from.

I guess that when we move we need something more than our luggage to bring with us. For some people a plant can make the connection between the former and the latter residence and make the new place more familiar!

Photography is supposed to be an objective image of reality. But is it really?

If you look closely in the picture above, there are some weeds next to the garbage bins. The same weeds are in the two pictures below. All the pictures are real. I just pointed and shot. I didn't even changed my lens or even the aperture!

But the reality above with the reality below are totally different.

Can they be both true?

Or am I, a shameless liar?

IMG_2450.jpg

I guess this is an old-fashioned question. In the era that we are talking about the creative use of AI, I am still wondering if the choices of the photographer alter the same reality that he/she captures!

But, what can I say, I am an old-fashioned guy myself :)

For this shooting I used a canon 6D mark II with a canon EF 100mm macro lens attached, fixed at f/2.8 for all the pictures.

After all what's the point of having a fast lens if you don't use it as such?

Happy new month to all of you!

I love it! I think I found another photographer who likes to shoot reality as it is. I talked about it yesterday in my post. That bin photo and what you say about the scene is what I mean.

Your first photo made me smile. Orestis had a post about this flower two weeks ago and called it bottle brush 😂. I recognized it right away, also it's the second time I see such flower. It's not growing here. I love it though.

Thank you very much!

It isn't easy to keep a fresh and interesting prospective. Everything has been photographed over and over again for so many times! I read your post. That photographer sounds very good, too bad he is not at the chain any more.

Haha yes, we all call them brushes, although their real name is Callistemon :)

Those hanging plumes of tree flowers at the end. If they are what I think they are, they make everything nearby smell wonderful.

I spotted nísperos (loquat 😍 )

Can they be both true?

Of course! It is just the perspective from which we are looking at things. The same ones.
I think those are happy ones who know to see those details that bring happy moments to our hearts and mind. Maybe sounds foolish to try to ignore the bad things or those that give us trouble, although we know they exist. But again, we have in our mind what we are giving the weight to. It needs a bit of practice, though 😅

But, we are in photography and not philosophy and it is morning. So I better keep drinking my morning coffee, see the list of things I wrote down I have to do today, then skip the whole list hahaha and go out to see the nice details of the Mediterranean climate before the summer heat kills me hahahahha

Haha you are right! Maybe it was yesterday's morning drizzling that got me into the philosophy mood!

I hope you did well at skipping your list yesterday and that you will, even better, today :)

We cannot dictate weather; every year in my country South Africa the week before spring day (1st of September here) is beautiful and hot, almost summer like, but the actual spring day is wet and cold. So funny.

Stunning photographs, my friend. These flowers are surely a feast for the eyes.

I love that comment, the idea of Photography as Objective. I think it was discussed in a book by Susan Sontag, Regarding the pain of others, or something in that line, in which she discussed this topic. We merely see what the photographer wants us to see.

Thanks for sharing! Keep well.

We cannot dictate weather...

Haha yes, that's what we call "Murphy's law", isn't it?

the idea of Photography as Objective

Of course, this is a very old discussion and many essays have been written on the subject. I haven't read Sontag's book but I know roughly her arguments. It is something that is always in the back of my mind, even from my days at the school of photography!

Thank you very much for stopping by!

Cheers.

Oh I am glad that I am at least making sense! I stumbled upon my old notes yesterday and saw the one quote from that book about framing. It is all about what happens in the frame, everything outside of the frame is unseen. Something in that line on thought.

Thanks for the reply! Cheers, and have an awesome week.

fantastic photos! 💚

and a nice tradition of the 1st of May. We don't have it.
here it's a day of all working people, and early we had a tradition to visit parades, now there are none of them, and people just go out to have picnics with families and friends.

Thanks a lot!

Actually this day has double meaning. On one hand it is the gathering flowers and enjoying nature tradition and on the other is the workers day, with demonstrations all over the country. They both take place but I focused on the first one for this post :)
