Showcasesunday: Walking in Athens

avatar

In case you you don't know it, Athens is the capital of Greece and was my home for more than 40 years, before I move to the island of Crete in search of a rural and more natural lifestyle.

Since I have moved away, I visit my hometown once or twice a year and a lot of times I am impressed by how fast the city is changing in the months that passed since my last visit! Especially when I wander to neighborhoods that I don't visit every time that I am in town.

In this case I had a free day and a brand new wide angle lens that I wanted to test so I headed to the area around Acropolis. The oxymoron in this part of the city is that it is one of the most expensive districts to buy a property and at the same time it is full of abandoned or in desperate need for renovation, houses!

IMG_0514.jpg

Anafiotika is a tiny neighborhood of 45 houses on the Acropolis hill, made by construction workers that king Otto (yes we used to have a king!) had called to Athens from the island of Anafi. Literally built at night, without a building permit, are now preservable buildings and a landmark of Athens for more than 150 years!

Walking through those narrow streets gives you the unique feeling that you are in a Greek island in the middle of a 5.000.000 people city! If you ever stop by, you shouldn't miss it. Of course be prepared that you'll meet a lot of tourists since it is one of the most visited parts of Athens.

Descending to Plaka I was for one more time amazed by the extreme contrast of luxury renovated residences next to falling apart ones! I guess having a house there and not wanted to sell it, is something between a blessing and a curse. Very valuable on one hand and extremely difficult and costly to make good use of it, on the other.

Of course all of that was not a surprise to me, I have seen it a lot of times in the past and I knew it in advance. But there was something that I hadn't noticed before and has started to give a new feeling to this old neighborhood. Apparently some of the narrow streets and abandoned houses attracted some graffiti artists that used to express their talent to other parts of the city. I found the result quite surprising but very interesting too, kind of a "metropolitan" feeling on country houses!

Which led my steps to another historical or some would say, notorious neighborhood. Exarchia is the place where the heart of Athens beats in frantic pace! It is the stage where the city expresses the best and the worst of its potential, very often simultaneously.

It is very hard to give you the vibe of this turbulent neighborhood. Creativity and juvenile delinquency, unconventional role models and political manipulation, drug addiction and active citizens that love and care for their community, everything is here in a explosive (sometimes literally) combination.

Don't get fooled by the fact that I took this pictures on a Sunday morning when all the stores are close and most of the people are asleep. Here, most of the graffiti are on completely functional buildings where families live and people run their business. The storefronts are closed with metal shutters providing an unusual canvas for the street artists. Artworks that disappear when the stores are open and reappear after working hours.

I don't consider it as a dangerous ghetto although some people refer to it as such but I would advise you though, if you intend to wander around with a camera hanging from your neck, to be careful about the time you do so and the people that might find themselves in front of your lens. Don't forget that many illegal activities take place there and a camera always arise suspicions if you have something to hide!

I originally wrote this post in 2019, you can find it here. But I wanted to share it one more time that all of you that don't follow me from the previous chain. I'll be using for that the #showcasesunday tag, an initiative of @nonameslefttouse meant to revive old and potentially undervalued posts.

All the pictures were taken with my Canon EOS 6D Mark II with a Canon EF 16-35 mm f4L IS lens attached and all the words are mine.

Thank you for reading and if you want to know more about me you can check out my introduction post.

In my place there are also many, but the neighborhood is narrow when crowded with people around. However it was quite chaotic and dirty. But I still go there often because it brings contrast of life, like your neighborhood with drawings and architecture.

Yes, sometimes you need a little chaos and dirt to spice up life!

Beautiful overview of the city. Yes, places change and I think even more the last 2 years. When visiting an area I haven’t been /lived in a while.
I like the feel of the tiny neighbourhood Anafiotika. A town inside a city…
You found some amazing StreetArt. Thank for sharing.

Thank you Jackie, I am glad you liked it!
It was an interesting day for me too. After all cities are as alive as the people living in them and they change together!

I'd love to be able to visit Greece sometime; it really is the birthplace of western civilisation. And the graffiti has a long and proud history behind it! There are some great finds of ancient graffiti, so these artists really are just following in a long history of proud work.

I do like the idea of working only at night to skirt around permits and regulations! Now we know! 😂

I never consider any doing of modern Greeks as a continuation of the ancient ones but relating ancient graffiti with today's street artists is an interesting concept!
I hope you do find the chance to visit us some day :)

Glad to see this post (again)! We were just looking for an exciting city to visit to 'work remotely' from in February... Maybe Athens?

Wow!!! Really? You are thinking of coming in Greece?
That would be great! We should definitely find a way to meet if you come :)

Hahaha - yes, it's a serious option @fotostef! Although Covid is still a concern as well. And maybe Athens in February isn't the best month to go? I read it's the coldest month for Athens, so maybe we need to go further south?

We're also looking at Lisbon, so it will be between those two :D

If we come to Greece we should definitely make a meeting happen, YES!

What? I can't accept to loose you over Lisbon :)

OK February is not the best month for Athens but if you want warmer you can come to Crete! Have you noticed that we are more southern than Tunis in Tunisia?

I am just kidding, I love Lisbon. I hope covid doesn't stop you and you'll have an amazing time wherever you go :)

Hahaha - I don't want to miss the opportunity either @fotostef :D

How do you feel Covid regulations are right now in Greece? Does it feel like things are getting better or worse at the moment? I can't find too much info on that, it feels like the whole world doesn't know what to do with Omicron :D

What are your favourite neighbourhoods in Athens as a (ex) local?

And indeed, Crete is definitely also something too check out :D Will keep you posted ofcourse!

I can't really tell you much about covid regulations, only what I read to the news (and I don't read much). Our everyday life here is in a different galaxy :)
As far as I know there are no restrictions if you have a valid vaccination certificate (3 doses). You may be asked for a pcr or rapid test in some occasions but I am not sure when. Museums, theaters, etc are all working with less people inside.
If the whole world doesn't know what to do with Omicron, our government is totally clueless. I don't want to prevent you from coming but please be prepared as if you are visiting a 3d world country and not a member of the European Union. Our administration is (lets say it polite) insufficient and rather erratic. I can't make any predictions how they are going to react in the following weeks.
My favourite neighbourhood is of course Koukaki, close to Acropolis and Philopapou hill, where our house is :)
The historical center is very interesting too, between Syntagma square and Thissio, but I wouldn't stay there.
And Exarchia is very nice but quite controversial. You took a taste from the pictures. I used to live there for years and I love it but it is not an easy neighbourhood.
But again with all this covid situation in big cities (any big city) I would tell to consider Crete a little more closely. The only thing I have to warn you about is that we know a lot of people that come from London or Berlin for a few months and they never left :)

This sounds good :')

Thanks for all your considerate answers, I will take the decision very seriously and am checking out both Crete as well as all the cool neighbourhoods of Athens right now and in the coming weekend :D

Will let you know once we decided!

You know I am an admirer of Greece and any reference to your country impresses and moves me. But I am not a fanatic admirer, I can separate the good from the bad. Although it seems hard to believe, Bucharest is a bit like Athens, not in the beauty and architecture of the buildings, but in this aspect of beautiful and well-kept buildings mixed with a lot of abandoned, degraded buildings that have lost their beauty.
I am not a fan of graffiti, even though a lot of it is very decorative and can be called art. But I don't like the ensemble, it makes me think I'm living in a comic book...
I like the doors of old houses instead. I think you do too.
Thank you for what you've shown here!
