The oldest pyramid in the world?

The sign was writing:

The Pyramid at Helliniko

What the f*ck, do we even have pyramids in Greece?

Apparently we do and this one, even though it isn't as big, neither as well preserved as the Egyptian ones, it is still a very old and very important monument!

Anyway I always feel good around ancient rocks so let's take a look :)

@traisto and our canine companion were already ahead of me, as I was looking around and taking pictures at my own pace. Most of the pyramid has collapse but there is no doubt for the shape or the size that once had.

The entrance is still standing and Marcos, our dog, was the first to run inside and check out the place. At the time of our visit I didn't know a thing about this monument but I did my homework before I write this post.

There are at least 26 historical mentions about pyramids in Greece which are the oldest in Europe. The interesting fact is that archeologists haven't figure out why they were built in the first place and what was their purpose.

There are different opinions about this specific one too. It may have been a grave but it may also have been a fortress or an observatory, no-one knows for sure. We do know that it was on a major road of antiquity and I have to add that the view is truly mesmerising!

Even the date of its construction is a mystery. Some researchers claim that it is hardly 2.500 years old but there is also a research of the university of Edinburgh saying that it is almost 5.000 years old. If the second estimation is true, this may be the oldest pyramid in the world! On the other end there is even a dispute if this is a pyramid at all!

The oregano that is growing on the ancient stones, doesn't seem to care about their age or purpose though, as long as it can get enough nutrients and sun to grow! And neither the wild flowers that are all over the place. I'll follow their example myself and leave it to the scholars to argue about history and theories :)

The camera that I used is a Canon EOS 6D mark II with an EF 24-105mm f4L lens attached. I edited the photographs in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic

All the pictures and the words are mine.

The stone arch looks unreliable. A stone can fall on your head;)

Lucky you!

I saw a doccie many moons ago about a bunch of pyramids, in a variety of locations, connected by some kind of layline - and built with the exact same technique

The bricks / blocks on these look similar.

Fascinating stuff!

There is quite a mystery around pyramids. Many stuff have been said and written but the truth remains vague and intriguing!

Apparently, there are a lot more pyramids around the world than in Egypt, lol! I was shocked too when finding out about these from Romania but the truth is that history is a lot deeper than we realize and most likely you'll never end up discovering what your country has been through. And I simply love that we don't have to fly over so many countries and continents to see pyramids as we have some in our countries too, lol

You are right. We only know a part of our history and there are so much more that are lost in the past.

And yes, it looks like we are self-sufficient in pyramids too :)
