SERIES REVIEW - Chucky is back and I'm Excited [ENG - ESP]

2021 was a great year, great series, great movies and the occasional iconic song. We were able to enjoy Wandavision, Squid Game, Falcón and The Winter Soldier and a lot of content that I sincerely appreciated because after how grey 2020 was we deserved that and more.

But a few decades ago, specifically the 80's were years that would mark us both musically and in terms of content. At the end of that decade a young Don Mancini who is now a screenwriter, producer and film director had a rather disturbing story that he wanted to bring to the big screen, but at that time he was a rookie so he would need help to co-write the script which Tom Holland ended up doing.

That's how they embarked on a story that would generate many sequels turning it thanks to its success into a cult film and I'm talking about Child's Play but in Latin America we know it as Chucky the diabolical doll. The story of a serial killer passing his soul to a doll to later seek rebirth in the body of a child, looked quite interesting.

The story of this doll would begin in 1988 with the first movie, followed by the second part in 1990 and another in 1991. The first installments focused on Chucky chasing Andy Barclay played by Alex Vincent an orphan boy who was given a good boy by his mother who unfortunately contained the soul of the evil Charles Lee Ray played by Brad Dourif.

Time passed and other versions came such as Bride Of Chucky or The Bride of Chucky in 1997, in 2004 we have Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky in 2013 and finally in 2017 Cult of Chucky. After Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer announced that it had obtained the rights to Chucky, the reboot of the franchise would arrive in 2019 with Child's Play.

But it was this year that would come to television the famous killer doll and what better way to do it than from the hands of its creator Don Mancici, this you see through a series independent of the 2019 film but that followed the same timeline of the previous sequels of the franchise.

Syfy the U.S. fiction giant and USA Networks would handle the broadcast while Star+ would do the same for Latin America. The result was critically acclaimed and received a flood of memes on social networks and the affection of the new generations, here my review of this great production.

Synopsis

Set in the town of Hackensack, the series follows Jake Webber (Zackary Arthur) who buys a good guy for ten dollars at a garage sale and takes him home without knowing the curse that rests on the doll. Jake is a fan of the podcast "Hackenslash" created by classmate Devon Lopez (Bjorgvin Arnarson) his crush.

Jake initially intends to use the doll as the final piece to finish a creepy sculpture made from doll parts that he has in his room. But he can't get Chucky's head out of his head and it's at that instant that the doll lights up and introduces himself with his now familiar greeting "Hi I'm Chucky, wanna play?".

Jake's dad, Lucas (Devon Sawa) is depressed since his wife and Jake's mother died and his business went bankrupt. This causes him to take out his frustrations on his son and in a fit of rage he destroyed Jake's sculpture after he insinuated at a family dinner with his twin brother Logan (Devon Sawa), his wife Bree (Lexa Doig) and nephew Junior (Teo Briones) that his son was gay.

Then Chucky decides to act and kills Lucas by electrocuting him, but Jake does not realize it until he tries to sell the doll and contacts Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) who is already an adult looking for revenge. Meanwhile, Chucky's girlfriend Tiffany Valentine (Jennifer Tilly) who meets with Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) a paraplegic woman possessed by the soul of the serial killer, carry out a plan to spread Chucky's soul to many dolls and cause a murderous mayhem from Hackensack.

Jake and his friends will have to save their families and friends from the curse of the killer doll with the help of Andy and Kyle (Christine Elise) who will return from the past to seek revenge.

Sinopsis

My Opinion

Flashbacks are a constant in the series (and if you're a fan you're going to enjoy it a lot), so I deduced that this would not only be the same story but that we would learn more about Charles Lee Ray through his past. Don Mancini is a genius in bringing back to Chucky that characteristic humor and wickedness that made us love the doll.

This series serves to keep alive a franchise that far from disappearing is getting stronger with time. This time Syfy presents us with a story loaded with real problems such as homophobia, alcoholism, mental health, bullying, cyber bullying and much more.

This made the series and its stories feel relatable and very well told. Each character is very well designed, their past (if you are a fan you will know the references and life of each of them) and even the jokes everything was very well done.

Andy and Kyle

Charles Lee Ray

The reappearance of Andy and Kyle from Child's Plays 2 was so iconic I couldn't believe it. But if we talk about someone who stole the show that would be Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany Valentine, without a doubt one of the best performances. But the whole cast was very well chosen starting with Zackary Arthur in the lead role as Jake, this character and the whole teen cast was very well done.

The character that evolved the most was Alyvia Alyn Lind as Lexy Cross, at first you hate her, but then her character becomes more like a real life heroine. It's a very youthful series with tinges of protest and rebellion.

Chucky has adapted to the new generations, becoming funnier and less terrifying, but that has kept him alive in time and those of us who are fans can't get enough of Don Mancini's genius. There is still Chucky for many years to come, let's hope it will be under the voice of the original interpreter Brad Dourif. I definitely recommend it.
