The Brandwood [ENG - ESP]

The days in town passed slowly as when you live in a hell in which days, hours and minutes seem eternal. We were the Brandwoods, a well-to-do middle-class family that had earned the scorn of a society that suffered many vicissitudes.

When I was a child I did not understand the reason for so much hatred and I used to wonder why people despised us to the point of not speaking to us. My sister was the one who suffered the most from the rudeness of those who thought they were superior to us and although she always pretended to be strong during the nights you could hear her sobs.

Once while walking down Branger Avenue, we accidentally bumped into an anime poster that we accidentally broke. Mr. Savage, who at that time made very nice piñatas of many cartoons, almost went to the extreme of hitting us, but my dad, who worked a few steps up the avenue, saved us from the rudeness of that old lout.

I remember feeling angry, my dad was always calm in the face of any violent reaction from others and told us that we should understand people. I cried out of helplessness, because I wanted him to beat that ruffian who had picked on 2 innocent children who had done nothing to be so hated in a county that was full of uneducated people.

Several times I had to separate my sister, who, without a word, would beat the crap out of anyone, almost like a wild beast, and nothing could stop her. Thank goodness we had an ally in Teacher Stinner who lovingly defended us from our cruel classmates.

Many years had to pass before I learned the reason for so much hatred or discrimination and no, it was not because of the color of our skin, our religion or our lineage for which we suffered scorn but because our father was defending the movement that fought for the end of racial segregation in the sixties.

When I found out, I wanted to know why such a successful lawyer had gotten us into so much trouble by agreeing to defend people of color with whom we had nothing to do. But I only got answers like when I became an adult I would understand that the man was the size of his difficulties.

Of course that happened, as I grew up I discovered that the same thing my sister and I had experienced was experienced by millions of people who were treated in the most demeaning way possible. I felt that even though I was white, I would have done the same as my father, who didn't even care about his own well being when it came to defending his ideals.

My dad was, is and will forever be my hero and I hope to teach my children even half of what his actions taught me. Because no one deserves to be treated differently because of their skin color, sex or religion and we Brandwoods always knew that.

Gracias y saludos, @franchalad.
