In the blink of an eye winter had arrived accompanied by a lot of cold, when we could Erick —my brother — and I would escape to play in the snow even though my mom seemed to be very sick. I always saw my dad sitting next to her in silence and when I asked what was wrong with my mom I was told that she was very sick and I was really worried about her health.

However, thanks to the cures that the nana gave her, she was able to recover her spirits little by little, she used to say that the eucalyptus leaves had saved her from going down to Sheol so young. Whenever I asked what that place was, my mother laughed and said that it was the final destination of human beings, the place where all the dead went.

The Ray's had moved out of the county, the gossips on the block said they had gone looking for their daughter Blue but I just didn't believe that version. Another version or rather conspiracy theory said that Mr. Ludovico had grown tired of the bitter Mrs. Theresa and had strangled her to death, burying her in his yard and then escaping.

That was far-fetched since Ludovico couldn't even walk properly, anyway our only neighbors at that time of the year were Miss Welser and the Hitches. The Hitches were a posh family, Mrs. Valentine was a rather unpleasant woman and not to mention her children Alan and Nancy. The only member of that family I liked was Mr. Edward who was a friend of my father's and seemed to be a very literate man, with whom we would discuss our favorite Shakespearean characters.

But his children were something else, Alan for example looked down on us and Nancy was the worst child in the school, she was rude, haughty and mean. I couldn't even look at them but my dad insisted that we spend time together and by the time Christmas came my patience was wearing thin.

When Santa would drop off their presents they would run out to compare their toys with ours and make us miserable. I never felt miserable, our Santa was austere, he gave us simple things that I valued very much, not the most expensive bicycle or a toy car but books that made me dream and travel the world with my mind.

The Hitch children didn't even read the signs and I think Mr. Edward admired us for spending time with books and adventures. While Mrs. Valentine never had the approval of my mother who avoided her company, there were rumors in the county that she had been a prostitute and my mother believed she was the reincarnation of the Virgin Mary. We didn't like her either, she was a petulant and hateful woman.

The winter went by without anything new, until we realized that we would have an unexpected visitor: Grandma Candace. Then I knew that perhaps that tranquility had suddenly ended and that we were about to live a real hell.
