The Glacial Grooves: The most popular natural destination on Kelleys Island.

Last summer I visited the Glacial Grooves in Kelleys Island, Ohio. This National Natural Landmark is one of the largest easily accessible glacial grooves in the world. Glacial grooves are long, straight and parallel striations made on a rock by the passage of a glacier over it. In the case of the Glacial Grooves in Kelleys Island, these grooves were formed by the Wisconsinan glacier which slowly moved through most of the Midwest about 18,000 years ago. This movement caused the creation of The Great Lakes and Lake Erie Islands.

The glacial grooves are about 430 feet long (131 meters), 15 feet deep (4.6 meters), and 35 feet wide (10.7 meters).

Fossils can also be seen in the limestone bedrock on Kelleys Island.

Fencing protects this national natural monument, and it is easily accessible through a walking path and stairs.

For those who love the treasures of nature, the Glacial Grooves is a must-see destination when visiting Kelleys Island.

Check out brandywine falls at the Cuyahoga valley national park, if you have not already. it's a pretty good waterfall. I just saw you are in Kent. I'm from Cleveland. The metroparks has lots of great spots to visit too. It's another cold one today!
