Facing what hurts us

Hello, friends of Holus Lotus. As usual, I bring you a reflective and testimonial piece about what I have learned over time in my personal healing processes.

Sometimes we ask ourselves, why does the same thing always happen to me? Why me?

One of the most difficult things I learned in therapy was to face my wounds head-on, and although I knew they were there, I didn't want to accept them, but only then did I become aware of what was happening to me.

Often when we go to a psychologist or any kind of therapy, we go with very high expectations, whether due to fears or prejudices or because of the unfamiliarity of talking openly about what worries us. But as we progress in our process, we reach a point where we have to face what hurts us and accept that reality, no matter how much it hurts.

Since my childhood and adolescence, I experienced a great deal of physical and psychological abuse because of my sexual orientation, which caused me to grow up with low self-esteem and anxiety issues due to all the bullying I endured. I kept all those feelings of incomprehension, loneliness, and inferiority locked away in my mind until adulthood, where that past continued to be reflected in my interpersonal relationships.

I always thought that I was an unlucky man and that life itself was a punishment because, for me, everything that was love was too big for me because I didn't know what it was like to feel valued.

Confessing this and other truths to my therapists led me to a point where I had to decide to give up the role of victim and start working on my self-esteem and accepting myself with everything that being myself entails, with my past and my present, and from there, reframe those wounds through forgiveness.

Humanising pain is also part of healing

Healing is not running away, it is looking at what hurts us and giving it space to feel what we have been hiding for so long.

It is learning to give it a name and meaning so that we can stop fearing our own darkness. In my case, I clearly saw my resentments, frustrations, anger and fears

And by expressing them, but also by taking action, I began to heal, to understand how I had got to that point and, from that awareness, to see and accept all those emotions.

Now I know that healing is an act of courage where fear will always be present, but so will willpower and faith.

Because we always hope to feel ready, but in reality nothing will happen until we decide to take the step.

From my experience, I know that healing will never be easy, because what has been inside us for years will not go away overnight, but if we do it wholeheartedly, we will be able to close those cycles and generational chains that had us tied to fear and pain.

In my process, it was necessary to go to both psychological and holistic therapies, but in the end, they all led me to myself, and although I have been closing cycles and forgiving myself. I have learned that healing is not a destination we arrive at, but rather a state we develop, where our mind opens up and resists the truths of life less and less.

Thank you very much for reading.
