Back In Black: 40 Years Has Passed Already! Can You Believe It? [ENG/ESP]
Imagine you're Angus Young, you've already had six albums that are unbelievably good. Success after success, profits, notoriety, good rock is at its peak, suddenly in the late winter of 1980, your friend, vocalist (iconic, to say the least) but somewhat over-indulged member of your band, goes out drinking with a friend. Apparently everything seems "routine", but that would be the last day on this existential plane for Bon Scott. Alcohol poisoning, and having had the misfortune of being (he died asleep) in a bad position that prevented him from reacting to his own vomit? Don't forget, it's winter (February), it looks like AC/DC has come to an end, doesn't it? Well, that's what we're going to find out...
While it is true that the band deeply resented Scott's death, and that on an individual level it affected several of the members of this monstrous, mammoth band, it is no less true that at no time did the Young brothers (Angus and Malcolm, founders and leaders of AC/DC) consider taking a break or postponing the band's long-awaited seventh album; nothing to do with it.... In fact, they focused their anger and frustration on the search for a vocalist who could bring together the particularities that have always defined the Australian band's strident, high-pitched yet powerful sound. And that's how they came across a certain Brian Johnson. A quiet, ordinary guy with a vocal range that (unbeknownst to them) would change the band and the music world forever.
Imaginen que son Angus Young, ya han tenido seis discos que son increíblemente buenos. Éxitos tras éxito, las ganancias, la notoriedad, el buen rock está en su máximo esplendor, de repente en el final del invierno de 1980, tu amigo, vocalista (ícono, por demás) pero algo pasado de excesos integrante de tu banda, se va de copas con un amigo. Aparentemente todo parece "rutinario", pero ése sería el último día en este plano existencial para Bon Scott ¿Causa del deceso? Intoxicación etílica, y haber tenido la mala fortuna de estar (murió dormido) en una mala posición que le impidió reaccionar ante su propio vómito... No lo olviden, están en invierno (febrero), parece que AC/DC ha llegado a su final, ¿no? Pues, eso es lo que vamos a averiguar...
Si bien es cierto que la banda resintió profundamente la muerte de Scott, y que a nivel individual afectó a varios de los integrantes de esta monstruosa y descomunal banda, no menos cierto es que en ningún momento los hermanos Young (Angus y Malcolm, fundadores y líderes de AC/DC) se plantearon tomarse un descanso o postergar el tan esperado séptimo álbum de la banda; nada que ver... De hecho, enfocaron esa ira y frustración que tenían, en la búsqueda de un vocalista que reuniera las particularidad que siempre han definido al sonido estridente, agudo pero poderoso de la banda australiana. Y así fue como se toparon con un tal Brian Johnson. Un sujeto tranquilo, común pero con un registro vocal que (sin ellos saberlo) cambiaría la banda y al mundo de la música para siempre.
These are the little things that make rock and roll great. And they are also the little things that are needed so that decades later we can appreciate what at the time was seen as an unparalleled tragedy. In this sense, and as I've explained in previous posts (you can go and check out the other band and album reviews I have on my blog) sometimes greatness comes from events that seem incredibly inopportune. Examples of what I mean can be seen everywhere in the history of music. The Ipod revolution, by Mr. Steve Jobs, would never have come without his "historic divorce" from Bill Gates, and the resounding intellectual property appropriation case. A rupture that meant the relaunch of Apple and the rest is history...
Likewise, in AC/DC, we can see how after having reached the always tortuous peak of rock, they (the band members) find themselves (the band members) faced with a momentous decision: do we go on, do we stop? Instinct, youth but above all the urge to keep making music motivated them to go on and so they ended up with nothing less than the 3rd best album in the history of music. I repeat, the first two albums before AC/DC's Back In Black are: Thriller, by a certain Michael Jackson and Bat Out Of Hell, by Meat Loaf.... What does it all mean? Well, a single decision (to continue) resulted in more than 50 million copies sold worldwide. That's insane. Imagine that, 50,000,000 Back In Blacks? Venezuela, the country where I live has a smaller population.
Estos son los pormenores que hacen grande al rock and roll. Y también son las pequeñas cosas que se necesitan para que décadas después podamos apreciar lo que en su momento se veía como una tragedia sin parangón. En este sentido, y como ya lo he explicado en anteriores posts (pueden ir y checar las demás reviews de bandas y discos que tengo en mi blog) a veces la grandeza viene de eventos que parecen increíblemente inoportunos. Ejemplos de lo que digo, los podemos ver en todas partes en la historia de la música. La revolución de Ipod, por el señor Steve Jobs, jamás habría llegado sin su "divorcio histórico" de Bill Gates, y el resonado caso de apropiación de propiedad intelectual. Ruptura que significó el relanzamiento de Apple y lo demás es historia...
Asimismo, en AC/DC, podemos ver como después de haber alcanzado la siempre tortuosa cima del rock, se hallan a sí mismos (los miembros de la banda) ante una decisión trascendental: ¿seguimos?, ¿paramos? El instinto, la juventud pero sobre todo la vorágine de seguir haciendo música les motivó a seguir adelante y así terminaron con nada más y nada menos que el 3er mejor disco de la historia de la música. Repito, los primero dos álbumes que están antes de Back In Black de AC/DC son: Thriller, de un tal Michael Jackson y Bat Out Of Hell, de Meat Loaf... ¿Qué significa todo esto? Bueno, una única decisión (la de continuar) se tradujo en más de 50 millones de ejemplares vendidos en todo el mundo. Una demencia. Imagínenlo, ¿50.000.000 de "Back In Blacks"? Venezuela, país donde vivo tiene menos población.
And all this, without adding the profits from the massive and apotheosic promotion tour they had. Let's remember one very important thing, in Back In Black, we find some of the most important songs in the history of this band: Shoot To Thrill, Hell Bells, and of course, the homonymous song of this great hard rock band Back In Black. Together with other songs, it has become one of the best creations they have ever made and more than 42 years later, it is still common to fill football stadiums to meet the band's followers who chanted (and still chant) their hits as if they were immortal hymns.
Y todo esto, sin agregar las ganancias que tuvieron la multitudinal y apoteósica gira de promoción que tuvieron. Recordemos una cosa muy importante, en Back In Black, encontramos unas de las canciones más importantes de la historia de esta banda: Shoot To Thrill, Hell Bells, y por supuesto, la homónima de esta genial agrupación de hard rock Back In Black. Que junto a otros temas, de anteriores se ha convertido en una de las mejores creaciones que hayan podido hacer y que más de 42 años después, aún sea común llenar estadios de fútbol para encontrarse con los seguidores de la banda que corearon (y todavía corean) sus éxitos como si de himnos inmortales se tratase.
And this is key to understanding the greatness of AC/DC, there are simply two things that make them great: their perseverance in the face of adversity and the simplicity (genius included) of its members; mainly their lead guitarist: Angus Young. How can you forget something that marked the lives of millions of people at a time when none of the platforms we use today to listen, download and publish music existed? (Apple Tune, YouTube, Spotify or any similar service were not even close to being born?
Impossible. What these guys did is simply majestic, and one can have nothing but enormous gratitude for an event that undeniably revolutionised music forever, but more especially rock. Being the third best-selling album in the history of music, they never reached number one on the Billboard chart. In fact, their best position was number 4, precisely with the single "Back In Black". A curious fact, but one that surely did not transcend. Greatness is not measured by a band's exposure time or the award, but by what their music does to millions of people who make it their own and treasure it. This is the case with Back In Black.
Y esto es algo clave para entender la grandeza de AC/DC, sencillamente lo que los hace grandes son dos cosas: su perseverancia ante las adversidades y la simpleza (con genialidad incluida) de sus miembros; principalmente de su guitarrista líder: Angus Young ¿Cómo se puede olvidar algo que marcó la vida de millones de personas en una época donde no existían ninguna de las plataformas que usamos actualmente para oír, descargar y publicar música? (No estaban ni cerca de nacer Apple Tune, YouTube, Spotify o cualquier servicio similar...
Imposible. Lo que hicieron estos tipos es sencillamente majestuoso, y uno no puede tener otra cosa más que un enorme agradecimiento ante un hecho que revolucionó innegablemente la música para siempre, pero más especialmente al rock ¿Lo curioso? Siendo el tercer álbum más vendido de la historia de la música, jamás alcanzaron un número uno en la lista Billboard. De hecho, su mejor posicionamiento fue el número 4, precisamente con el sencillo "Back In Black". Un hecho curioso, pero que seguramente no trascendió. La grandeza no se mide por el tiempo de exposición de una banda o el galardón, sino por lo que su música causa a millones de personas que la hacen propia y la atesoran. Este es el caso de Back In Black.
