Mauthausen: el campo de los españoles [ESP/ENG]
KL Mauthausen, es el nombre oficial de este infame pero histórico lugar. Sus primeras dos letras, son las siglas en alemán para "Campo de Concentración" (Konzentrationslager), y el resto es el nombre de la localidad donde estaba (y aún sigue estando, a modo de museo de la vergüenza alemana para con el Holocausto). Este emplazamiento está a no más de 20 kilómetros de Linz, en Austria. Y está rodeada de una serie de pequeños pueblos. De modo que la típica pero muy repetida mentira de "no sabíamos" (dicha por muchos ciudadanos del Tercer Reich) se cae una vez más.
Ahora bien, ¿por qué es relevante retomar una herida de hace más de 70 años en el pasado? Sencillo. Porque no se puede olvidar lo que en este lugar sucedió, y sobre todo, para sus reclusos más célebres: los españoles republicanos que allí estuvieron en cautiverio, condiciones de esclavitud, y sobre explotación que sencillamente nadie en la comodidad de nuestras sociedad modernas; con nuestros lujos y sobre todo, maneras de matar el ocio; puede, siquiera, imaginarse... Junto a Bergen-Belsen, Ravensbrück, Dachau y Buchenwald, éste terrorífico lugar ha presenciado la maldad en su estado más salvaje. Donde seres humanos, destruyeron (en sentido literal) a otros seres humanos, solo por el hecho de ser "diferentes".
KL Mauthausen is the official name of this infamous but historic place. Its first two letters stand for 'Concentration Camp' (Konzentrationslager), and the rest is the name of the town where it was (and still is, as a museum of German Holocaust shame). This site is no more than 20 kilometres from Linz in Austria. And it is surrounded by a series of small villages. So the typical but oft-repeated "we didn't know" lie (told by many citizens of the Third Reich) falls flat once again.
Now, why is it relevant to revisit a wound from more than 70 years in the past? Simple. Because we cannot forget what happened in this place, and above all, for its most famous inmates: the Spanish Republicans who were held there in captivity, in conditions of slavery and over-exploitation that simply no one in the comfort of our modern society, with our luxuries and above all, ways of killing leisure, can even imagine... Along with Bergen-Belsen, Ravensbrück, Dachau and Buchenwald, this terrifying place has witnessed evil at its most savage. Where human beings destroyed (in a literal sense) other human beings, just because they were "different".
Todos sabemos la historia de la Alemania nacionalsocialista y su período de terror, humillaciones, persecuciones, deportaciones, y destrucción. Un sistema, una máquina, un objetivo. En Mauthausen, al igual que en muchos campos de concentración (y exterminio) se entraba por la puerta, pero "se salía por la chimenea". También, se "trabajaba" hasta la más absoluta extenuación. El colapso era la moneda de cambio de todos los días, donde humanos desnutridos, golpeados y cargados de miedo y horror, sucumbían por culpa de la serie de malos tratos generalizados que allí se podía experimentar. Recordemos, que las horas que "trabajo" allí eran de "sol a sol". Dicho de otro modo, de 05:00 a.m hasta las 18:00 p.m. Todo un mecanismo de reducción de resistencia, dirían algunos...
Sin embargo, nada más alejado de la realidad. Si Mauthausen ha permanecido como un símbolo de resistencia y esperanza es especialmente gracias a la comunidad de españoles exiliados (a causa de la Guerra Civil Española) y que fueron capturados cuando Alemania invadió y derrotó a Francia, en el verano de 1940. De este modo, aquellos que habían huído del régimen de terror y opresión militarista de Franco, y se encontraban en Francia, fueron capturados y redireccionados a campos de concentraciones para "mantenerlos a raya"; o en palabras de mismo Himmler: "reeducarlos". Si algo tenían los nazis, es que eran las personas más crueles que hayan existido jamás.
We all know the history of National Socialist Germany and its period of terror, humiliations, persecutions, deportations, and destruction. One system, one machine, one goal. In Mauthausen, as in many concentration (and extermination) camps, one entered through the door, but "went out through the chimney". They were also "worked" to the point of absolute exhaustion. Collapse was the daily currency, where malnourished, beaten, fearful and horrified humans succumbed to the widespread mistreatment that could be experienced there. Remember, the hours I "worked" there were from "sun up to sun down". In other words, from 05:00 a.m. until 18:00 p.m. Quite a resistance reduction mechanism, some would say...
However, nothing could be further from the truth. If Mauthausen has remained a symbol of resistance and hope, it is especially thanks to the community of exiled Spaniards (because of the Spanish Civil War) who were captured when Germany invaded and defeated France in the summer of 1940. Thus, those who had fled Franco's regime of terror and militaristic oppression, and were in France, were captured and redirected to concentration camps to "keep them in line"; or in Himmler's own words: "re-educate them". If there was one thing the Nazis had, it was that they were the cruelest people who ever lived.
Ahora bien, más de 7.000 españoles estuvieron alguna vez dentro de alguna de las instalaciones del campo de concentración de Mauthausen, o en sus subcampos cercanos, de los cuales más de 5,000 de esta cifra inicial perecieron bajo el régimen de horror que era el sistema de cautiverio de los campos de la muerte. En palabras de Primo Levi, "...Todo atisbo de humanidad, una vez dentro de los campos, dejaba de existir. La verdadera y única cara del horror la hallabas en uno de estos lugares". Decapitaciones, fusilamientos, torturas, hambrunas forzadas, desnutrición, muerte por cámara de gas (fija) y móvil (en autos preparados para tal fin), dentro de las famosas canteras, cayendo muerte por colapso de cuerpos que no soportaban más, eran algunas de las formas de "dejar el campo".
De este modo, cualquier recluso que entrase dentro de estas "instalaciones" tenía un altísimo porcentaje de salir muerto. Sin importar la edad o el por qué de su "estadía". No olvidemos, que los españoles republicanos que estuvieron allí eran de izquierdas, su gran mayoría anarquistas y comunistas disidentes del gobierno de Franco y ex participantes de la República de España, previa a la Guerra Civil. Franco, al tomar el poder, dejó muy en claro que cualquiera que no estuviese en los territorios españoles, entonces, no era español. Por tanto, aparte de prisioneros de un enfermos maniáticos, también eran "apátridas".
Now, more than 7,000 Spaniards were once inside one of the facilities of the Mauthausen concentration camp, or in its nearby sub-camps, of whom more than 5,000 of this initial number perished under the regime of horror that was the death camp system of captivity. In the words of Primo Levi, "...All semblance of humanity, once inside the camps, ceased to exist. The true and only face of horror was to be found in one of these places". Beheadings, shootings, torture, forced starvation, malnutrition, death by gas chamber (fixed) and mobile (in cars prepared for that purpose), inside the famous quarries, death by collapse of bodies that could no longer bear it, were some of the ways of "leaving the camp".
Thus, any inmate who entered these "facilities" had a very high chance of leaving dead. Regardless of age or the reason for their "stay". Let us not forget that the Spanish republicans who were there were left-wingers, mostly anarchists and communists, dissidents from Franco's government and former participants in Spain's pre-Civil War Republic. Franco, on taking power, made it very clear that anyone who was not in Spanish territories at the time was not Spanish. Therefore, apart from being prisoners of a sick maniac, they were also "stateless".
Por tanto, ningún estado podría reclamarles legalmente. Situación que era reflejada en el sistema de clasificación que tenían las SS para administrar los campos. Dicho de otro modo: los internos, tenían una serie de símbolos e identificaciones que denotaban sus procedencias. Por ejemplo, para cualquier recluso que para ojos nazis fuese judío, el representativo era una serie de dos triángulos amarillos invertidos que formaban una "Estrella de David" seguidos de un número de clasificación y una serie de garabatos que mostraban si el cautivo era o no peligroso, disidente político, homosexual, gitano, comunista, o preso común. No se preocupen, sé que es enredado y confuso, pero prometo dejar una imagen representativa en el post donde se podrá ver con mejor detalle todo lo que acabo de relatarles.
La importancia para la historia de la humanidad de que estos presos españoles, hayan estado en este particular campo de concentración es enorme. Sin las pruebas físicas (fotografías, negativos y rollos de cinta documentales) de Francisco Boix, jamás hubiese sido posible demostrar contundentemente que tanto Himmler, Albert Speer, así como Ernst Kaltenbrunner, estuvieron dentro de este Mauthausen, y por tanto, era má que consciente de la realidad que acontecía allí a diario. Mismas pruebas documentales que fueron presentadas en los Juicios de Nuremberg contra los jerarcas nazis que aún seguían con vida. Por si fuera poco, fueron una de las redes de resistencia y sabotaje más grande que jamás haya existido dentro de las mismísimas narices nazis.
Therefore, no state could legally claim them. This situation was reflected in the classification system of the SS for administering the camps. In other words, the inmates had a series of symbols and identifications that denoted their origins. For example, for any inmate who in Nazi eyes was Jewish, the representative was a series of two inverted yellow triangles forming a "Star of David" followed by a classification number and a series of squiggles showing whether or not the captive was dangerous, a political dissident, a homosexual, a gypsy, a communist, or a common prisoner. The importance for the history of humanity that these Spanish prisoners were in this particular concentration camp is enormous. Without the physical evidence (photographs, negatives and rolls of documentary tape) of Francisco Boix, it would never have been possible to demonstrate conclusively that Himmler, Albert Speer, as well as Ernst Kaltenbrunner, were inside this Mauthausen, and therefore, he was more than aware of the reality that happened there every day. The same documentary evidence was presented at the Nuremberg Trials against the Nazi leaders who were still alive. As if that were not enough, they were one of the largest networks of resistance and sabotage that ever existed under the very noses of the Nazis.
Éstos (los republicanos españoles) fueron los que recibieron a los estadounidenses que liberaron el campo de concentración en mayo del 45'. Además, muchos de ellos son el claro ejemplo de las injusticias que su propio gobierno tuvo para con ellos. Dejándoles al completo ostracismo y olvido. Incluso, una vez la guerra terminó. La inmensa mayoría de estos valientes, tuvo que elegir destinos ajenos a su propio país. Es gracias también a las experiencias de los españoles que criminales nazis como Aribert Heim (un doctor igualmente cruel a Mengele) ha trascendido hasta la opinión pública mundial. Además de simbolizar la esperanza y la rebeldía ante el más cruel y macabro de los totalitarismos: el fascismo nacionalsocialista. Para muestra un botón, si quieren ver cómo eran las condiciones que estos muchachos tenían que soportar a diario, les recomiendo ver en Netflix: El Fotógrafo de Mauthausen.
Una película que bien contiene ciertas cuestiones exageradas y llenas del clásico dramatismo español, documentalmente es casi intachable. Lo que la hace ideal para poder sentir (así sea por un instante) empatía, y ponernos en los zapatos, cargados de angustia y zozobra de estos reclusos bajo administración de las terribles SS, brazo ejecutor del Holocausto y de múltiples crímenes contra la humanidad y de guerra, durante el Tercer Reich alemán. Mis respetos a estos héroes y sobre todo mi admiración. Jamás caer de rodillas, nunca. Ni siquiera, ante el peor de los horrores.
They (the Spanish Republicans) were the ones who welcomed the Americans who liberated the concentration camp in May '45. Moreover, many of them are a clear example of the injustices that their own government did to them. Leaving them completely ostracised and forgotten. Even after the war was over. The vast majority of these brave men had to choose destinations outside their own country. It is also thanks to the experiences of the Spaniards that Nazi criminals such as Aribert Heim (a doctor equally cruel to Mengele) have transcended world public opinion. A film that, although it contains certain exaggerated issues and is full of classic Spanish drama, in documentary terms it is almost flawless. This makes it ideal to feel (even for a moment) empathy, and to put ourselves in the shoes, full of anguish and anxiety, of these inmates under the administration of the terrible SS, the executing arm of the Holocaust and of multiple crimes against humanity and war crimes during the German Third Reich. My respects to these heroes and above all my admiration. Never fall to your knees, never. Not even in the face of the worst horrors.
