Why Africa is Poor Even When it has Untaped Riches.

Africa has been regarded as a poor country, either as a result of its GDP or the standard of living of its inhabitant. The question of why Africa remains poor has long been a topic of debate and discussion even when the continent has vast natural resources and potential for growth. Many African countries continue to struggle with poverty, economic inequality, and social instability. In this post, I will look into some of the reasons why Africans are poor.

The first thing I will discuss is corruption. Corruption is a major problem in many African countries, with government officials and business leaders siphoning off public funds for personal gains and riches. Corruption hinders economic growth and development by diverting resources away from essential services like healthcare, infrastructure, and education. You start to wonder where politicians' children who do not have any current job description are able to buy houses worth millions of dollars in the US, UK, and other foreign countries.

One of the primary reasons why Africans are poor is the legacy of colonialism. A lot of people haven't grown past the colonial impoverishment the Europeans put us through. European powers carved up the continent, exploiting its resources and people for their own selfish purpose. After colonialization, a lot of Africans cannot do without depending on foreign powers to make progress.

Another point is Political Instability. A lot of African countries just got their independence, and some just began the journey of democracy. Prior experiences of political instability, civil war, and conflict have hindered the economic growth and development of the nations. Instability makes it difficult to attract investment both foreign and local, it would disrupt essential services and drive skilled labor away from the country like we have the JAPA syndrome in Nigeria.

Educate a child and you have made a future leader but in Africa, education is the least. Hide a fortune in a book, and a black man would not see it because we are not programmed to read from childhood, we are not educated. Education is a key factor in reducing poverty and promoting economic growth. However, many African countries have inadequate education systems, with limited access to schools, trained teachers, and resources. This creates a cycle of poverty where people cannot improve their skills and knowledge.

Many African countries are burdened with debt, which hinders economic growth and development. Debt servicing takes away resources that could be used for essential services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Asides from talking about economic debt by countries, even individuals in Africa are owing. Debt is a part of Africans, and it is affecting the personal finance of so many Africans.

To conclude, these are part of the many reasons why Africans are poor, and addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that includes investment, a change of mindset, education, and good governance. I believe Africa would be great someday, but for now, we would be regarded as poor when we are not if we get things right.
