Halloween craft and decoration at a food court in Kobe, Japan. I’m not sure what the creators were thinking but the concept seems to be a mix of Humpty Dumpty, Halloween, Japanese Culture and Christmas.

Hi fellow Hivers and ReggaeJahmmers. I hope you’re having a great weekend.
As a kid growing up in Jamaica 🇯🇲, Halloween wasn’t celebrated. I think most Jamaicans still don’t celebrate it. Things and time have however changed and maybe more people are interested in having costume parties.
Maybe the same is true for Japan 🇯🇵 and other countries. While Halloween isn’t necessarily a part of certain cultures, it has become more widespread especially where commercialism is concerned.

In the classroom setting in Japan, it’s common to see foreign teachers of English doing Halloween lessons at this time of year. Students often exchange chocolates, sweets and other snacks. Some teachers may do pumpkin carving as an activity. Students enjoy making Jack-o-lanterns and many go on group trips to enjoy Halloween celebrations at Universal Studios of Japan.

Though this happens every year, I do get surprised at how the packaging of regular snacks change to Halloween packaging “overnight”. The same happens at Christmas time. The snacks are the same, same flavors, same kinds, but the wrappings may have “Happy Halloween” or “Merrry Christmas” and may cost a bit more than those with regular packaging. Hmmm…
The most surprising thing for me however, is how early items are up for sale for these events and how quickly they go in preparation for following events.

Early Celebration?

Some of the items that were being sold at Costco for Halloween.

I went to Costco in September and certainly saw Halloween items being sold. What kind of surprised me and made me feel rushed, was that just a few sections away from pumpkin scarecrows, Jack-o-lanterns and skeletons, were Christmas trees, ornaments and Christmas carols ringing in the air. I really had to stop and check if the month was still September. The irony to all this is that though it’s Halloween weekend, stuff for the celebration are basically out and now, it’s all about Christmas.

Halloween at the 100 yen Shop

While some may opt for more expensive items, the 100 yen shops which are are similar to dollar stores in America, offered a wide range of affordable items. Kids and adults alike, could easily find decorations, masks costumes and so on. Daiso is one of the most popular 100 yen stores. Below are some of the Halloween items they sold.

Creativity

Some of the decorations I saw were quite creative and colorful. I saw a large number of paper lanterns. Each was decorated and transformed to make faces. From a distance, they seemed like colorful balls. Up close, it was interesting to see the different designs on each lantern.

I assume that these decorations in public spaces, especially at large malls, somehow attract customers and increase sales.

Possible Sunday DashOut Items?

Some people love to have pumpkin pie at this time of the year. I don’t usually have a sweet tooth (except for fruits) and I’m not a fan of pies but did snap the Halloween cake and pies from my most recent Costco trip.
The pumpkin pies were going for about 1600 yen. They were fairly big.

Do you celebrate Halloween?
Do you usually wear costumes?
What are decorations like in your area?

Have a wonderful and safe weekend.😃

Oohh love this! I love seeing how Halloween is celebrated in other parts of the world. :) Seems Japan is modern and westernized as well. Some places here in Metro Manila also celebrate, but the events are mostly in commercial places to drive more business for the stores and shops. We personally simply commemorate All Saints' Day and remember our dearly departed loved ones. Just love how we get an extra holiday this year. I love the long weekend :D Enjoy your weekend!

😃Thank you. Cheers to a long weekend. It’s mostly commercial here too and yes, westernized. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. 🎶

Halloween - I heard about that already almost as an adult 😅
It was not celebrated in my country either, It is now when we see it everywhere. Yes, the shops offer now a lot of Halloween stuff and I also noticed the packages for snacks in this theme.

The paper lanterns were cool and I liked this thingy:

Thank you and thanks for stopping by.
😆I liked that thingy too. I'm not sure what it really is but it reminded me of a mop. It's quite creative how they've added a face to it. Re the lanterns, I’m now thinking of new ways too use them. I now see them differently. lol
Yeah, Halloween now seems to be widely “celebrated”. I feel very much out of the hype. Haha!

As a kid growing up in Jamaica 🇯🇲, Halloween wasn’t celebrated. I think most Jamaicans still don’t celebrate it.

So, this also wasn't a thing in Suriname, but we did have carnival because of the Roman Catholic churches. Because of Western movies the generation before me tried to introduce halloween and some people then celebrate both. Carnival is more prevalent though, because kids are allowed to dress up for one day at some schools.

The university student association did organize one or two halloween party's in my day though and I did participate.

The most surprising thing for me however, is how early items are up for sale for these events and how quickly they go in preparation for following events.

Yup, I've read here on Hive that some places have already started with Christmas decorations, while there are other celebratory days before that. Here in Suriname, we used to see Christmas decorations after Independence day on November 25th. I'll check if that's also true this year.

Quite similar. Carnival in big in Jamaica too. It's not a public holiday but I think it in Trinidad. (Public holiday at carnival time)

It's all about Christmas decorations now. A friend from the Phillipines told me that there, lol once the "-ber" months have started, Christmas decorations are up. I don't know if it is like that across all islands there.

I feel like this year went really quickly. Soon we'll be saying,"Happy New Year".

I did not know that and wondering if that's the case in Brazil, because they also go all out with Carnival.

!LOL That's really early hihi

Same thing went through my head you know hahaha
I think I was so busy and everything happening so fast, that I didn't have time to process time.

It’s really big in Brazil right? I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that they have holidays at that time.

Lol!! I’m accustomed to celebrations starting in November. September feels early.

This year we can truly say, “Time flies”. Lol

Hahah I bought my zombie mask at Daiso for I think ¥210 😂

Costco, is long time I don’t go there. One is gonna open up very close to me well like 30 minute drive. It’s seems Costco slowly taken over everything.

I’m gonna look in the stores later just to get that smack of retail marketing reality and change of holiday strategy. Nice post!

Lawks is a pumpkin pie that 🤤

Thanks man. Daiso Daisuki. Lol!!Can find so many things there.
For real, Costco is taking over. Buying some things there really makes sense for families. It’s always full.

Yes, it’s pumpkin pie. I’ve never had it. Not a pie person. lol

It's fun to see the different styles in different places. Those first characters look like giant decorated eggs. One almost looks like Santa in a witches hat.

The decorated lanterns are neat.

I love the pumpkin pie stencil too.

You’re right. They do look like giant eggs. Really reminded me of Humpty Dumpty especially since they were on a little wall. 😆😂I hope none of them fell. Yes, I was looking at that Santa-looking one.

Those lanterns drew attention. There were maybe almost 200 of them. They were probably designed by children.
