(Edited)

Hello, friends. It’s been a long time since my last post—I’ve been completely absorbed in work and the responsibilities of life behind the screen.

However, I’ve recently been making time to get my blog back up and running, and I really wanted to kick things off with this project I’ve been working on for quite a while now—I’m talking about the five Zords from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

I’ve already made one—the Red Ranger’s Tyrannosaurus. You can see a post about that figure at the link below:

Saludos amigos.

Well, today I’d like to share with you the second part of this project: the Pterodactyl. I thought this would be ideal compared to the other elements because it would allow me to start putting together the pieces I’d need for future assembly—something I didn’t plan very well in the original Tyrannosaurus design.

Since this design is much less complex than the previous one, I’ll be sharing it with you in just three parts—this is the first one. Join me in the creative process behind this first part.

Well, the first thing I did was create the base, or the skeleton of the figure. In this case, I used cardboard—a thick kind that I could bend but that was still sturdy enough to hold its shape.

In the image below, you can see the initial shape I made and how I began to bend it so it would fit against the T-Rex’s chest.

1000173001.jpg

I continued adding more pieces of cardboard to cover more of the T-Rex's chest and also to provide more support to the joints, adding cardboard angles and flaps that would help stiffen the frame.

As shown in the image on the right, once the base was ready, I began covering it with flexible modeling clay and shaping it into the form I wanted for this figure.

1000173002.jpg

I started shaping the chest design. The original Pterodactyl has a sort of horizontal row of teeth, which is something I wanted to recreate but with a raised texture, rather than making them flat.

I also started cutting out other plates and details that would add more layers to the figurine.

1000173087.jpg

As you can see in both the image above and the one below, I made some cuts in the original design to make room for the legs, which would allow the figurine to stand on its own.

I also designed a sort of turbine in the lower center, which represents this robot's propulsion system.

1000173003.jpg

On the other side of the figurine, I continued adding more flexible clay and various elements that would not only give it that mechanical look but also make the piece more sturdy.

In addition, I made other parts, such as the head and the tail, which will also be attached to the T-Rex.

1000172555.jpg

I finally made these two hinges, which are made of paper and flexible clay. They're used not only to attach the entire piece to the torso of the other Zord, but also to serve as a connection point for the wings, which I'll share later.

1000172313.jpg

Now, take a look—I made some modifications to the T-Rex. I did this so it could serve as the base for the Megazord. I also made some other improvements, but I’ll explain those in detail later.

The point is that those two cylinders made of paper and glue are there to join the two pieces together; that’s where the two tubes I mentioned earlier will fit.

1000173026.jpg

The Pterodactyl's tail also attaches to the T-Rex with a snap-fit connection, much like a drawer on a desk. The image on the right shows the complete piece.

Well, the main figurine is now finished. There are still a few more elements to add, which I'll show you later.

Below are a series of photos of the final result:

If you take a moment to look at the image below, you'll see just how small this Pterodactyl is compared to the T-Rex—and it's not that it's small, but rather that the other one is so big.

1000172563.jpg

Although the fact that it’s small doesn’t mean it didn’t require any work; on the contrary, it took a lot of time to design, since I had to first figure out how I would make it before starting the project so as not to waste materials.

Plus, the modifications to the T-Rex also took some time. That’s why I’d like to know what you think. I invite you to leave your thoughts in the comments below—as always, I’ll be happy to read them. With nothing more to add, I’ll sign off for now...

See you next time!
