Definitely working the land is a whole process. Whoever does not like to wait or be patient cannot work the land, because the plants and the land itself must be given time.

In my case I have been working on my land cleaning it, to prepare it for the next cycle of siempra, however, during this cleaning I have found a few surprises, a few little plants that I didn't know I had there...

In previous posts I showed you the whole process I had followed to clean up the land. I told you that I had to cut down a couple of trees to eliminate some termites that were invading my home. Well, I finally managed to cut the two trees I had to cut down.

One was a guava tree. It was sick and the termite infestation was taking over. I cut it completely and left only a stump of that tree.

I don't know if it will grow again, but at least I planted another guava seedling to grow in its place and I also planted, very close by, another banana plant.

With the soursop tree I also did the same thing. I cut the whole trunk and separated it by sections to make it easier to dispose of it all. Later I will use it as firewood although I have been told that soursop firewood is not good. In any case I already got rid of this pair of diseased trees I had on my land so I won't worry about that anymore....

Now, one part of my house has a concrete floor. On this concrete floor I piled up a bunch of tires and put some soil inside them. This is for the purpose of planting in this concrete area where there is a lot of sun.

Come on, it's no big deal, it's like planting in a very big pot, only this one is made with tire towers.

In this case I planted a few ocumo plants. It is known by other names (I think Malanga), but here in my country it is called that way. It is a tuber that can be grown from seven months onwards, although I have not harvested anything yet, but I think I will be able to harvest soon.

Here you can see the two rows of tire towers that I have on the concrete floor. On one side they are empty, ready to plant some small plants and on the other side are the towers with the Ocumo plants.

Now, while clearing the land I came across this surprise, a few sweet potatoes that had grown without me knowing it. As far as I knew all the sweet potato plants had died, that is, the crop had not been harvested, but I found this pleasant surprise.

There are not many, so I will use these to reseed in this new cycle. It is a good seed that I have, so I have to wait about six months to be able to eat sweet potatoes.

Other much smaller plants that I managed to harvest were garlic. This species of garlic is known here in my country as Chinese garlic.

I usually consume only the leaves and replant the bulb in the soil, so that it continues to grow. Currently I do not have many seeds so I do not consume the bulbs but replant them to continue production.

Here you can see how I separated the leaves from the bulbs. These leaves can be used to give a lot of flavor to food.

Its reproduction is basically the same as that of a common garlic. I use an egg carton where I add the substrate to plant it. There I place the bulb and cover it again with soil.

I leave it there for a couple of weeks until the leaves start to come out again and then I plant it completely in the ground. From a single head of garlic will grow two or three more. Come to think of it, it reminds me a lot of chives, but it tastes a lot like garlic.

Definitivamente trabajar la tierra es todo un proceso. El que no le guste esperar o ser paciente no puede trabajar la tierra, porque a las plantas y a la misma tierra hay que darle tiempo.

En mi caso he estado trabajando en mi terreno limpiándolo, para prepararlo para el siguiente ciclo de siempra, sin embargo, durante esta limpieza me he encontrado con unas cuantar sorpresas, unas cuantas plantitas que no sabía que tenía por allí...

En publicaciones anteriores les mostré todo el proceso que había seguido para limpiar el terreno. Les dije que tenía que cortar un par de árboles para eliminar unas termitas que estaban invadiendo mi hogar. Pues bien, ya finalmente logré cortar los dos árboles que tenía pendiente cortar.

Uno era de guayaba. Estaba enfermo y la plaga de las termitas se estaba apoderando de este. Lo corté por completo y dejé unicamente un tocón de ese árbol.

No sé si va a crecer otra vez, pero al menos sembré otra plantula de guayaba para que crezca en su lugar y también sembré, muy cerca de allí, otra planta de plátano.

Con el árbol de guanábana también hice lo mismo. Corté todo el tronco y lo separé por secciones para que sea más fácil desechar todo eso. Más adelante lo utilizaré como leña aunque me han dicho que no es buena la leña de Guanábana. En cualquier caso ya me deshice de este par de árboles enfermos que tenía en mi terreno así que ya no me preocuparé por eso...

Ahora bien, una parte de mi casa tiene piso de concreto. En este piso de concreto amontoné un montón de neumáticos y les coloqué tierra adentro. Esto es con el objetivo se sembrar en esta área de concreto donde da bastante sol.

Vamos, no es nada del otro mundo, es como sembrar en una maceta muy grande, solo que esta está hecha con torres de neumáticos.

En este caso yo sembré unas cuántas plantas de ocumo. Se le conoce con otros nombres (creo que Malanga), pero aquí en mi país se llama así. Es un tubérculo que se puede cultivar desde los siete meses en adelante, aunque no he cosechado nada aún, aún así creo que pronto podré cosechar.

Aquí pueden ver las dos ileras de torres de neumáticos que tengo en el piso de concreto. En un lado estan vacías, listas para sembrar alguna planta pequeña y al otro estan las torres con las plantas de Ocumo.

Ahora bien, mientras limpiaba el terreno me encontré con esta sorpresa, unas cuantas batatas que habían crecido sin yo saberlo. Hasta donde yo sabía todas las plantas de batata habían muerto, es decir, la cosecha no se había dado, pero me encontré con esta grata sorpresa.

No son muchas, así que estas las usaré para resembrar en este nuevo ciclo. Es una buena semilla esta que tengo, así que toca esperar unos seis meses para poder comer batatas.

Otras plantas mucho más pequeñas que logré cosechar fueron los ajos. Esta especie de ajo se conoce aquí en mi país como ajo chino.

Yo suelo consumir solamente las hojas y vuelvo a sembrar el bulbo en la tierra, para que continúe creciendo. Actualmente no cuento con muchas semillas así que no consumo los bulbos sino que los vuelvo a sembrar para continuar con la producción.

Aquí pueden ver cómo separé las hojas de los bulbos. Estas hojas se pueden utilizar para dar mucho sabor a la comida.

Su reproducción es básicamente la misma que la de un ajo común. Yo uso un cartón de huevo en donde agrego el sustrato para sembrarla. Allí coloco el bulbo y lo vuelvo a cubrir de tierra.

Allí lo dejo por un par de semanas hasta que empiezan a salir nuevamente las hojas y entonces lo siembro por completo en la tierra. De una sola cabeza de ajo crecerán dos o tres más. Ahora que lo pienso, me recuerda mucho al cebollín, pero tiene un sabor muy parecido al ajo.

Bien amigos, esto ha sido todo por ahora en cuanto a mi jornada de trabajo en mi huerto casero. Espero que les haya parecido interesante o cuando menos se hayan entretenido viendo algunas de las fotos.
