It has been quite hot here in my region for several days now. In the absence of rain, the heat has taken over everything and sometimes it is unbearable, not only for me but also for my chickens. Luckily, I usually keep them hydrated, with plenty of water whenever I can. Sure, there are times when they run out of water and the hens end up really hot, but I usually try to keep them with water in the pen.

Desde hace varios días ha hecho bastante calor aquí en mi región. A falta de lluvia, el calor se ha apoderado de todo y a veces resulta insoportable, no solo para mi sino también para mis gallinas. Por suerte, acostumbro a tenerlas hidratadas, con suficiente agua cada vez que puedo. Claro, hay momento en que se les acaba el agua y las gallinas terminan realmente acaloradas, pero por lo general trato de mantenerlas con agua en el corral.

This is something very important if you have chickens, because the heat usually suffocates them very quickly, they even bathe in soil to try to mitigate the heat, but it is something that affects them a lot, so I try to give them plenty of water.

Esto es algo muy importante si tienen gallinas, porque el calor las suele sofocar muy rápido, incluso se bañan en tierra para procurar mitigar el calor, pero es algo que las afecta mucho, por eso trato de darles bastante agua.

In spite of everything, they have maintained their production and almost every day they produce two to three eggs, this is great because I have been buying eggs for the house for a while now, I no longer buy eggs for the house, but consume the ones the hens lay.

A pesar de todo, se han mantenido en producción y casi que a diario producen de dos a tres huevos, esto es genial porque tengo un tiempo que ya no compro huevos para la casa, sino que consumo los que ponen las gallinas.

Speaking of eggs, recently a pet store in my town got a big shipment of these yellow chicks that are everywhere. There were a lot of them and they weren't that expensive, so I decided to buy a couple, to see how they behaved with the other chicks.

Hablando de huevos, hace poco a una tienda de mascotas de mi ciudad llegó un gran cargamento de estos pollitos amarillos que hay en todos lados. Habían muchos y no estaban tan caros, así que decidí comprarme un par, a ver cómo se comportaban con los otros pollitos.

They were given to me in a small cardboard bag and I took them home, evidently they were too scared, because yes, chicks are very scared, like any animal and even more so if they are chicks, which are babies.

Me los entregaron en una pequeña bolsita de cartón y los llevé a casa, evidentemente estaban demasiado asustados, porque sí, los pollitos se asustan mucho, como cualquier animal y más si son pollitos, que son bebés.

For some reason they didn't want to get off my lap, I would set them down and they would immediately jump onto my lap, it was obvious they didn't feel safe in an open space, at least not without someone to protect them. Unfortunately they didn't have a mother hen, so I would take care of them in the meantime. So I put out some baby chicken feed and water.

Por algún motivo no querían bajarse de mis piernas, los dejaba en el suelo e inmediatamente saltaban a mis piernas, era evidente que no se sentían seguros en un espacio abierto, al menos no sin alguien que los protegiera. Lamentablemente no tenían una mamá gallina, así que yo los cuidaría mientras tanto. Por eso les coloqué un poco de alimento para pollos pequeños y agua.

Surprisingly, when the other chicks, who do have a mother hen, saw the feed I served this pair of chicks, they came out of the pen through the holes in the wire mesh and came to eat.

Sorprendentemente, cuando los otros pollitos, que sí tienen una mamá gallina, vieron el alimento que le serví a este par de pollitos, salieron del corral por los agujeros de la malla metálica y vinieron a comer.

This got me thinking that maybe these two chicks could be adopted by the other hen. At first yes, the hen received them well, but then she rejected them when she realized that they were not her children, her chicks.

Esto me puso a pensar en que quizás estos dos pollitos podrían ser adoptados por la otra gallina. En un primer momento sí, la gallina los recibió bien, pero luego los rechazó al darse cuenta que no eran sus hijos, sus pollitos.

On the other hand, the other larger chickens were pecking at them when approached, so I couldn't leave them alone in the coop, I had to get them out of there and leave them momentarily outside in a small basket that I improvised with an incandescent bulb to keep them warm at night.

Por otra parte, los otros pollos más grandes los estaban picoteando cuando se les acercaban, así que no podría dejarlos solos en el gallinero, debía sacarlos de ahí y dejarlos momentáneamente fuera, en una pequeña cesta que improvisé con un bombillo incandescente para que les diera calor por la noche.

In any case, I prepared the food I usually feed my hens and fed them, but I also left some for the little chicks to see if they would also eat.

In the case of these, it was more complicated because they are not used to eat just anything, in fact they do not know how to eat something different from the processed food sold in the stores; however, when these chicks saw the other hens eating that food, they were also encouraged to try it and apparently they liked it.

En cualquier caso, preparé la comida que acostumbro darle a mis gallinas y las alimenté, pero también les dejé algo a los pollitos pequeños a ver si también comían.

En el caso de estos, fue mas complicado porque no están acostumbrados a comer cualquier cosa, de hecho no saben comer algo distinto al alimento procesado que venden en las tiendas; sin embargo, cuando estos pollitos vieron a las otras gallinas comer esa comida, también se animaron a probarla y por lo visto les gustó.
