There is room for everything on a bus [ESP – ENG]
Saludos a todos los miembros de la comunidad, ¿cómo están? Entre las vivencias que me ha dejado el regreso a la universidad se encuentras aquellas relacionadas con los autobuses, específicamente con las personas que hacen uso de ellos en el día a día como lugar de trabajo… sí, lugar de trabajo. En una oportunidad anterior les había comentado sobre una situación extrema que había vivido en un autobús puesto que este casi chocó por andar compitiendo en la vía con los demás autobuses de la ruta, ahora, sin embargo, el asunto es diferente. La verdad es que no sé de dónde salen tantas personas que han hecho de los autobuses un lugar donde ofrecer sus productos así como sus supuestos talentos, sé que no es de ahora, en mi país siempre ha sido costumbre que se monten vendedores ambulantes ofreciendo sobre todo chocolates, caramelos y demás chucherías, pero he sentido como un aumento en la cantidad de personas que se dedican a esta actividad.
Greetings to all the members of the community, how are you? Among the experiences that my return to university has left me are those related to buses, specifically with the people who use them on a daily basis as a place of work... yes, a place of work. On a previous occasion I had told you about an extreme situation I had experienced on a bus since it almost crashed because it was competing on the road with the other buses on the route, now, however, the matter is different. The truth is that I don't know where so many people come from that have made the buses a place to offer their products as well as their supposed talents, I know it is not new, in my country it has always been customary to set up street vendors offering mainly chocolates, candies and other trinkets, but I have felt an increase in the number of people engaged in this activity.
Es que no les miento, cuando sales a la calle ves a muchos en las aceras con sus productos encima en cajas y morrales montándose en los autobuses a venderlos, yo he caído en la tentación de comprarles porque tienen promociones que no se sienten como si en realidad estuvieses gastando dinero, ahora mismo hay una de dos caramelos Chaos por un (1) dólar, así te la promocionan los vendedores, pero son de la nueva presentación donde vienen varios de los caramelos en un mismo empaque, llevas más cantidad por menos dinero. Ellos llegan en su mayoría con frases como: ‘Buenos días, mi gente bella, ¿dónde está la Venezuela educada que me regale los buenos días?’ Es como una programación que tienen la mayoría de los vendedores ambulantes en los autobuses, puede que a lo mejor se pongan tristes que muchas veces nadie les contesta y les da los buenos días, pero creo que lo más importante en esta dinámica es que alguien les compre, sentimentalismos aparte.
I'm not lying to you, when you go out on the street you see many on the sidewalks with their products in boxes and backpacks riding on the buses to sell them, I have been tempted to buy them because they have promotions that do not feel like you are actually spending money, right now there is one of two Chaos candies for one (1) dollar, this is how the vendors promote it, but they are the new presentation where several of the candies come in the same package, you get more quantity for less money. Most of them arrive with phrases like: 'Good morning, my beautiful people, where is the educated Venezuela that gives me good morning?' It is like a program that most of the street vendors have in the buses, maybe they get sad that many times nobody answers them and gives them good morning, but I think the most important thing in this dynamic is that someone buys them, sentimentalism aside.
No tengo nada en contra de estos vendedores, yo les compro las veces que el dinero me lo permita, son de esos que te salvan la vida cuando ataca el hambre y todavía falta para llegar a la casa, pero hay momentos donde me provoca que no aparezcan más. Digo, si vas en un autobús que está muy lleno y se monta alguien con un bolso que parece llevar el universo mismo adentro, sabes que llegará un momento en donde te tocará fusionarte con algún asiento para poder dejarlo pasar, porque ellos son de los que se pasean por todo el autobús, entonces no es muy agradable. Hace un par de semanas pasé pena porque prácticamente tuve que sentarme encima alguien para que el vendedor pasara, son situaciones que nos gustaría evitar, pero nos acostumbramos a que usando el transporte público uno pierde parte de su dignidad. He perdido la cuenta de la cantidad en donde, como decimos aquí, alguien me lo ha recostado, por los vendedores a los que no les importa la incomodidad de los pasajeros.
I have nothing against these vendors, I buy from them as often as money allows, they are the kind that save your life when hunger strikes and you still have a long way to go, but there are times when I don't want them to show up anymore. I mean, if you go on a bus that is very full and someone gets on with a bag that seems to carry the universe itself inside, you know that there will come a time when you will have to merge with a seat to let them pass, because they are the kind that walk all over the bus, so it is not very nice. A couple of weeks ago I felt sorry for myself because I practically had to sit on top of someone to let the vendor pass, these are situations that we would like to avoid, but we get used to the fact that by using public transportation we lose part of our dignity. I have lost count of the number of times, as we say here, someone has laid on top of me, because of the vendors who do not care about the discomfort of the passengers.
Las técnicas que utilizan para vender sus productos varían, no solamente se basan en el precio para atraer consumidores, en algunos casos llegan hasta la intimidación sutil para que las personas se vean obligadas a comprar motivados por la incomodidad. Varios pueden subirse a los autobuses empezando su oferta con frases que a muchos asustan, como por ejemplo: ‘Yo no vengo a robarles’ supuestamente como un intento por hacer sentir a la gente segura de su presencia, pero que en realidad sabemos los que usamos el transporte público es una amenaza encubierta. Recientemente en uno de mis viajes a la universidad se montó en la unidad de transporte donde iba un hombre de mediana edad con un aspecto que daba mucho que pensar, sin querer juzgar a nadie, empezó a relatarnos que había salido de la cárcel hace algunos meses y que estaba ahora trabajando como vendedor ambulante ofertando esas artesanías que había aprendido a hacer durante el tiempo que estuvo preso…
The techniques they use to sell their products vary, not only do they rely on price to attract consumers, in some cases they go as far as subtle intimidation so that people are forced to buy out of discomfort. Several may get on the buses starting their offer with phrases that scare many, such as: 'I'm not here to rob you' supposedly as an attempt to make people feel safe of their presence, but in reality those of us who use public transportation know that it is a veiled threat. Recently on one of my trips to the university a middle-aged man with a very sobering appearance got on the transport unit, without wanting to judge anyone, he began to tell us that he had been released from prison a few months ago and was now working as a street vendor offering those handicrafts he had learned to make during his time in prison...
Creo en las segundas oportunidades, pero los venezolanos no le podemos creer fácilmente estos cuentos a cualquiera que se presenta porque sabemos que las cárceles de nuestro país funcionan como una Escuela del Crimen, esas personas que salen de ellas pueden encontrarse en un estado de descomposición mental peor que el que tenían cuando entraron. Es de conocimiento común que los vendedores que suben a los autobuses son lo que llamamos acá ‘malandros’ para referirnos a los delincuentes, por eso, aunque a muchos usuarios les incomode su presencia, nadie dice nada porque a decir verdad, nadie quiere meterse en problemas con uno que podría cargar un cuchillo encima. Hay uno en particular que es de aquellos que se montan en el autobús a rapear, aunque la verdad no se le da nada bien y para mí siempre han sido presentaciones donde lo único que hace es molestar a los demás porque usa a los usuarios del transporte como recurso, burlándose de todos y diciendo tonterías.
I believe in second chances, but Venezuelans cannot easily believe these stories to anyone who shows up because we know that the prisons of our country function as a School of Crime, those people who leave them may find themselves in a state of mental decomposition worse than the one they had when they entered. It is common knowledge that the vendors who board the buses are what we call here 'malandros' to refer to criminals, so, although many users are uncomfortable with their presence, no one says anything because to tell the truth, no one wants to get in trouble with one who could carry a knife on him. There is one in particular who is one of those who gets on the bus to rap, although the truth is that he is not good at it and for me it has always been a presentation where the only thing he does is to bother others because he uses the users of the transport as a resource, making fun of everyone and talking nonsense.
No puedo decir que todos los que se montan en los autobuses a hacer algo relacionado con el arte son malos, porque sería mentira, digo, esto es como ir a un concierto sorpresa, donde no tienes la menor idea de quién va a cantar, por lo que no sabes tampoco si te va a gustar. Me he llevado sorpresas muy gratas al descubrir que hay varias personas talentosas regalándoles a los usuarios del transporte público ciertos momentos de alegría disfrutando de buena música, sobre todo aquellos que cantan salsa debido a que me encanta. Es por eso que digo que en un autobús hay espacio para todo, algunos días pueden convertirse en un centro comercial donde te venden gran variedad de chocolates importados, tapa bocas, lápices, pulseras, zarcillos, mentol… y otros días tienes entretenimiento en vivo con cantantes que incluso son capaces de llevar su propia corneta de metro y medio para que todos los usuarios tengan la posibilidad de escuchar. Sin duda alguna este país es único.
I can't say that everyone who gets on the buses to do something related to art is bad, because that would be a lie, I mean, this is like going to a surprise concert, where you have no idea who is going to sing, so you don't know if you are going to like it either. I have been very pleasantly surprised to discover that there are several talented people giving the users of public transportation some moments of joy enjoying good music, especially those who sing salsa because I love it. That's why I say that in a bus there is room for everything, some days it can become a shopping mall where they sell you a great variety of imported chocolates, mouth covers, pencils, bracelets, earrings, menthol... and other days you have live entertainment with singers who are even able to carry their own meter and a half horn so that all users have the possibility to listen. Without a doubt this country is unique.

This vendors are the same everywhere, they don't want to give travellers peace. Here some even start by bribing you with compliments before their sales pitch.
So nobody asked the one who was in prison why he was arrested? Well, my curiosity would have gotten me to ask him even the duration he served. He seems comfortable sharing it anyways.😂

I honestly don't think anyone would have the courage to ask that man why he was put in jail. Here sometimes they also start throwing compliments at you, but especially if you are a woman because most of the street vendors that make a living on the buses are men.
