A very addictive indie-roguelike | Neon Abyss

Many times it happens that we see things related to a game, whether images, phrases, characters, or just a word, and unconsciously without knowing it we live knowing the tiny part of the content of a game that we do not know its name or even its existence. Something like that happened to me with the game I bring you today, a game of which I lived all my life seeing the content of it, profile pictures -the typical of Steam- or gifˊs but I never got to try it until today.

Yup, I'm talking about as you see in the title Neon Abyss, a game that I was able to try, and no doubt I was surprised by the brutal level of fun it was and consequently I spent a few hours trying it. So, this is why I want to bring my first impressions about this title although not everyone knows I have come to see it on offer several times on Steam and I think that is worth bringing for you to take a look, I'm sure many people do not know and do not know the good game they are missing, so let's go.

-

So, 'Neon Abyss' what's it about? We're talking as I mentioned in the title about a roguelike, something common on my blog that doesn't make it very clear what plot or synopsis it wants to revolve around to develop its gameplay, but I think in the several hours I was able to try it out I feel that's one of the things that matters the least. Some time ago in my first posts, I brought a post bringing The Binding of Isaac, a game of which playing NA reminded me a lot and you will see why.

Within it, our goal will be to get as far as possible in each turn we give, the surprise factor will be the management of resources that we get along the turns to make life easier against certain types of enemies. This is why the most preponderant factor in Neon Abyss could say that it is the randomness because everything in general within it has a random factor that if you have already played several roguelikes then you will know.

All the elements that make up the game are generated in each turn that we start, from the dungeons, enemies, bosses, collectibles, skills, and as well as the chests and each room door. All of this is something that I love as it is something that takes away the monotony factor of the game and makes each turn you do different from the last, giving a unique factor to our experience when playing it, something that I think is pretty cool and reminds me a lot of when I played TBoI on repeat.

-

Then, hand in hand with this we will have that each factor of our character can be edited, but many times as it happened in TBoI it was necessary to take with intelligence to choose or not each object since many times happened that not distributing and deciding the resources made us screw up a great part of the turn. This is why the game usually reminds you every time and if you have not played any roguelike one of the best tips I can give you, distribute your items wisely and all good.

Now, as for the visual part as you can see we will have a two-dimensional camera in the style of other games of the same style as could be Spelunky, Dead Cells, Blasphemous, etc. It is a camera to which those of us who usually play the style of roguelikes will be accustomed and it is already something typical of games of this style in addition that usually combines it very well with what would be the controls of the game, making a whole experience more comfortable.

-

The controls are some of the most basic things honestly, but to my surprise is the first game of this style in which I was much more comfortable playing it on a keyboard and mouse than with a control something quite curious. We will have the typical movement controls, jump, and with the mouse, we can aim to shoot at targets with the weapon of our character in the left click in addition to being able to activate c skills in the right click in turn in exchange for a purple crystal - you see it on top left- .

Once we die we reappear in a kind of lobby, a disco in which we can change character, each character will have different factors such as the type of bursts of his weapon and its adaptation to certain skills. In addition, in the bar we will be able to improve our base skills us which will make us have certain advantages every time we advance, these improvements are available for completing tasks that we are asked at each turn and thanks to it we will get coins.

In Neon Abyss as I told there is a myriad of elements, among some of the most curious I found was the kind of eggs which are elements that will accompany us to complete certain levels of the dungeon and once they open have two ways, be empty or become a pet that will support us as we fight certain enemies in our adventure to make our way throughout the level which I personally found quite funny and useful when fighting with enemies, bosses or just cleaning some rooms.

In the graphical part I can certainly say that, as I said with Skull, I never get tired of playing this style of pixel art games, plus the color palette that is in most -if not all- of the game is usually the typical Neo-noir Cyberpunk style, something that I think is brutal. In most scenarios know how to distribute the colors and I think that in this section seems to me something that Neon Abyss does wonderfully and knows how to be beautiful to the naked eye for anyone.

-

It also has a rather curious soundtrack as it tends to be a robotic and energetic style very close to the visual style that shares and tries to convey everything that is the game itself. Personally, both the visual and sound sections seemed to me one of the best things and it is nice that indie companies are increasingly raising the bar in each game that comes out, I have always been a fan of indie games and with each release, I reaffirm that more.

ˊIs it worth it?

To be honest, Neon Abyss is a game that in my opinion is totally worth it, in my case I felt like The Binding of Isaac from a horizontal perspective at least in the content part as they keep a great similarity in themselves. I think that everything else is a game that is quite polished in general aspects and knows how to get you hooked to it every time you play it, something typical of TBoI which is a game that you can spend hours stuck playing and this case is the same.

Would I recommend it? Lately, I've seen it in Steam sales on several occasions and even for free at Epic Games if I remember correctly, it's a pretty fun game and for the price, I got to see it -two or one dollar- I think it's a great offer for all the content and how much you can take advantage of the game hooking you easily to it. Anyway, tell me then, how did you like Neon Abyss? Have you already tried it? Let me know in the comments, if you've made it this far thank you and see you in the next one.
