An interesting game, not very well executed | Trek to Yomi

For some time now I have been reviewing different games that I have been acquiring, either because they caught my attention and the experience they left me was so good that inspired me to talk about it. Most of these reviews are usually good in general, but I never thought of doing my first review criticizing a game, but you know as they say, 'never it's too late for the first time', it's also good to talk about this kind of things so let's get to it.

Some time ago as you may know I got the Xbox gamepass and at least from the catalog of computer games there is an absurd amount of games that is common to see one that catches your attention and inspires you to download it to see how it is. One day browsing it I found a game that caught my attention because of its theme, which as you might guess, yes, Japanese culture, which is one of the ones I like the most, so it came to my mind that I must download it.

It's Trek to Yomi, a game based on the Japanese culture of past years when it was a golden age for it with the presence of great characters such as the Samurai. In their culture there was a predominant theme of honor which we will see a lot throughout the gameplay and how we will advance accordingly, I was able to complete the prelude which made up a few hours of gameplay in which I could observe many things about it, mixed feelings, other good things and so on, let's get to it.

In the game, we play Hiroki, a boy -at the time of the prelude- who is training with his master to become the next Samurai to guard his village. Everything in the village goes as any relatively normal day which we are in another lesson until out of nowhere an event occurs that destabilizes the village in general, some bandits attack it making his master go to defend it in a very bloody fight with many deaths in which even Hiroki himself will have to be present to defend those he loves.

As you can see, anyone who has seen my reviews will know that I usually make a lot of comparisons in general or at least to the feelings that games give me so that people can situate themselves a bit in what I try to project. This game reminded me a lot of Ghost of Tsushima and Sekiro, with a little bit of a different approach? We could say yes as one of the things that characterize it as it seeks to give a different bet as it raises and in turn projects an alternative visual art that I'll talk about later.

- An example of this cinema I'm talking about -

So, in its visual section, we usually represent through color palettes that we all know, black and white, which make a pretty nice art in conjunction with the music of each scenario. However, I was a little surprised by the number of resources requested in the minimum requirements to run it for the little development of environments of the same, although perhaps it may be that we tend to be in environments with characters, I was not very clear that the truth.

Anyway, it is a style that in general gave me a similar feeling to those Japanese films that you used to see on some website or in some review of a film that sought to imitate that similar style. Honestly, it's something that I tend to like since in many games I feel that they are increasingly looking to migrate to a cinema-like experience taken to a slightly more interactive level, which I think is something amazing without a doubt.

As for the gameplay mechanics, I could say that it is something to which more than disagreement I feel that I have to adapt more to them, they are somewhat similar to those we saw in Sekiro as they prioritize a lot the counterattack section. For those who have played any game of the Souls-saga is the same as doing parrys since at least it is the only way -that they give in the prelude- to be able to finish with the enemies more practically.

Also in it, we can explore around the map in a fairly closed mapping, we have collectibles around it which I guess more than contribute to the story will be more for the theme of the game's achievements. In addition to this, the camera will be in charge of taking us around the game-changing very little what will be the angles within the game itself, giving players a very pleasant gaming experience, which I had no problems with in the fights.

Overall Trek to Yomi is a game that makes me have mixed feelings, to be honest, I think it is a game that seeks to give a 'different' proposal of a plot that we know has been exploited in the market for many years. I feel that the game as such does not have a bad section, yes, you can see that it is very well done in general, but I feel that where it fails is that these sections do not complement each other well to get to give that feeling of genius to the player.

Also, I don't know if I'm the only one that happened it, but I feel that the optimization in general of the PC version is a bit deplorable because sometimes it had some giant fps drops that were not even justifiable. Even lowering the quality of the presets to the graphics did not help to stop how bad it was going, I think that even RDR2 didn't give me such sudden drops that I still don't understand why, but that was certainly one of the factors that slowed down my gameplay experience.

Anyway, to conclude I had to end up uninstalling the game from my PC which was something that disappointed me a lot, I know it is a controversial topic the whole thing of optimizations in general, but it is something that can ruin the playable experience for anyone. However, I don't think Trek to Yomi is a bad game, I just think that in general, the whole set of elements, how you plot them, and how you tend to do them is something that personally didn't fulfill my expectations. In the same way that I may not like it, someone else may like it. If you read this far thank you and see you on the next!
