Did the Merchant Find Bitcoin in Jesus' Parable of the Kingdom?

In most part of the synoptic gospel, Jesus is well-known for teaching important life lessons in parables. One of his prominent parables, the parable of the Good Samaritan, has become so famous in modern times that a person who does charitable deeds is referred to as a Good Samaritan. The culture even spans across some pagan societies.

In the book of Matthew chapter 13, for instance, Jesus tells several interesting parables. But of particular interest, however, is his parable of the merchant who finds godly pearls of great value and then goes on to sell everything he has to purchase the pearl. Wow. Here is how Mathew 13: 45-46 puts it:

  1. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

Indeed, the short parable above talks about the Kingdom of God as an investment. But since this writer is not a theologian, and does not intend to become one any moment soon, this article will focus on the investment merit of the parable which is to the effect that a merchant found a pearl of great value and sold everything he had to buy it.

The important question is that, why did the merchant sell everything he had to buy a pearl? Why does buying the pearl suddenly become everything that matters to the merchant to the extent that he has to sell everything he has? The only logical answer that comes to mind, from an investment point of view, is that the pearl is so valuable that the merchant man knows that once in his possession the pearl will bring profits in multiple folds. Perhaps, that could compensate the merchant for all his toil under the sun.

Of course, there was no Bitcoin in the days of Jesus and the pearl he referred to was definitely not Bitcoin. Yet, in modern times, the only asset class that could be worth selling everything to acquire for massive long-term profit is Bitcoin. From its humble beginnings in 2009, Bitcoin has established itself as the most profitable asset in human history - for at least the early investors.

So, did the merchant find Bitcoin in Jesus' parable of the kingdom? The answer is clearly no. But if the Bible were to be written today, the only asset class that comes close to what the merchant found is Bitcoin and perhaps the merchant's name would be Satochi Nakamoto.
