A Nonfiction Experience (Eng - Esp)

Did I make a mistake ENG.png

I was very excited about the outing. I had planned everything down to the last detail. We would go and enjoy a play, but first we would sit somewhere nice overlooking the sea and have a few drinks. I wanted to spend a nice evening with her and I was pretty sure she did too.

You see, she is a friend I had the pleasure of meeting a few years ago, we studied at the same college and I think we liked each other in a friendly way, as we always said hello whenever we met. She was studying one career different than mine, that's why we didn't always cross at the university.

Now the coincidences of life placed us in the same workplace, so I broke the inertia and asked her out during a break in a work meeting.

I asked her if she'd been to the theater lately, to which she replied that she had'nt. Then, very shy as I am, out of my mouth came some words in English that served as an official invitation:

- Would you like to go out sometime?

The most surprising thing for me was his unexpected answer:

-Yes, why not?

Then I started to plan everything and get excited as I always do. Anticipating events. My mistake was to put so many expectations on the matter, because on the day of departure, he writes me a message telling me that he woke up feeling bad.

For a moment everything I had planned for the day fell on me with the weight of the impossibility of the outing and I felt disappointed, but I understood that it was not up to me and I wished her a speedy recovery.

As I had the expectation of going to the play and all the energy accumulated, I feared that this energy could be transformed into negative thoughts. So, at the time I had planned I dressed the same way and went alone.

It was a very good show at one of the old docks in Havana Bay and so I was happy not to have missed the play, which was in its last week of staging, but I can't deny that I missed her being there.

I don't know where we are at now, nor if I should ask her out again, what do you guys think? I think not much has been lost and my only mistake was idealizing what would be a simple outing that can still happen. Why am I writing all this then? Because one needs to get one's thoughts in order and writing them down helps quite a bit. I'll thank your comments!

- Would you like to go out sometime?

Hello @garorant, a few notes about this post. Firstly, we ask that authors state the source of all photographs in their stories. Secondly, we are a community based around quality short stories, which feature an arc and a resolution. In creative non-fiction, this often entails talking about how an experience impacted our lives. Lastly, it is important to look for pronoun changes when we edit, for half of this story you refer to her as 'him'.

We believe you would find a lot of clarification on what we are looking for in our post on creative non-fiction. We hope this feedback is insightful. Thank you for sharing your story with us, and for your engagement with other members of the community.

I fixed it now! That "him" error! I think the deepl translator gave me a bad moment. The photos are taken by me, I had put it on the end of the post.

I believe this is a personal short story that doesn't have an immediate impact on life 😄, they must be added other experiences and time to form what is called an impact on our life. Thanks for your good tips and the reading!🙌 I thought this community was good to share my personal recent story.

The translator changing pronouns is a common error, it happens to a lot of people, and is just something to look for during proofreading. :)

This is definitely a great place to share your personal story @garorant! A personal impact does not have to be enormous, in fact, you stated one quite well:

My mistake was to put so many expectations on the matter,

By developing this in your conclusion, as well as adding in some details of what the play was like, this story would be a wonderful example of creative non-fiction! As such, is it the only mention of the prompt in your tale, and is not supported by a creative element.

In this excerpt from The Ink Well's creative non-fiction article, you can see how the creative element is emphasized, as well as the need for a resolution. We hope you keep this in mind for future creative non-fiction prompts, thank you for sharing your story with us!

(No ficción creativa 😉)
