Is it a tank, is it a ball, or is it an armadillo?
Greetings insect lovers. These small and fascinating living beings come in the most unimaginable and surprising forms and many of them have even been the inspiration for artifacts that are part of our daily lives. The insect that I bring you today looks like an animal, an object, and also a vehicle, hahaha, what could it be?
Everyone knows what a ball is and surely most of you have seen a tank and an armadillo, well, this insect is a mixture of all this. I often find these little friends among my plants, they love to dig in the ground, although many times they walk around the balcony and even inside the house.
Its scientific name is Armadillidium vulgare but it´s known in many ways depending on the country, ball bugs, pigs, little pigs, fiorellas, moisture bugs, bolinche, cochineal, etc. Actually, they aren´t insects, but a genus of small land crustaceans (the only ones that exist), they belong to the Isopoda order and although they originate from Europe, specifically from the Mediterranean, they have spread throughout the world. They feed on decomposing organic matter and their habitat is damp places (between plants, under rocks, etc.).
Did you know this insect that is not really an insect but the only terrestrial crustacean? It's fun to watch them walk around quickly like little tanks and then turn into little balls when you grab them. Well friends, I hope you have enjoyed this post and thanks for your time.

Cool shots :) This animal is very common in my country and we call it "svinka" :) It kind of reminds me of the prehistoric trilobites :D

It actually sounds funny in our language too because it´s similar to the word "sviňka" and that means "little pig" :D
