Online books: my way of getting more knowledge

I do believe something magical can happen when you read a good book ~ J.K Rowling

This quote shows that book reading is not just glancing through pages but also acquiring knowledge. I discover this secret of reading when I was quite young.

Growing up, my mom wanted to instil the love of reading books into me and my sister, to do this, she borrowed different types of storybooks from her school library and bring them home for us every weekend. I was fascinated with the books at first because of the pictures, I think one thing that hooks children to books is the pictures in the books. Gradually I went from storybooks to novels, and then to literature books. I read everything and anything I can lay my hands on.

When I got to secondary school, I moved to reading educative books. The first book that changed my mind towards educative book was the book by Robert Schuller titled Tough time never last but tough people do. This book change my perspective towards educative books and now every year, I make sure I read at least two educative books. My priest once said your greatest development comes from the books you read.

Then only paperbacks were available but now we have ebooks.

do I prefer traditional books or ebooks

I prefer ebooks. So many reasons make me prefer online reading to traditional reading.

First, the ease of reading.

I love reading novels and other books. online reading helps me to read where ever I am. I don't necessarily have to be at home or in a library for me to read a book. Due to the nature of my work, it would be difficult to be reading traditional books at work but with my ebooks, I can be snooping around reading and nobody will notice. I have my books with me always and ebook has helped me lessen boredomness

secondly, less fear of the number of book pages.

Source

You can imagine when you want to read a book that is about 500 hundred pages or more. Reading such a book tends to make you wonder when you will finish the whole book. But with ebooks, the books don't feel heavy or bulky. I get motivated to read books now because I am less concerned about the number of pages the book has.

Thirdly, fewer damages

Traditional books can be damaged easily. Water or rodents can damage books if they are not properly stored, and unless you protect the books in a safety box, they are prone to destruction. Ebooks on the other end are on your phone. You can buy a book and save it to your mail, cloud or google drive with no worries.

and lastly

I prefer ebooks because to read a traditional book you have to buy or lend the book. However, ebook allows you to get some books for free using only your mobile data to download the books. You necessarily do not need to have money to get some books online.

Finally, I love online reading so much and am kind of addicted to it. Am so grateful to be able to get my books online, and read them anywhere I am.

For the past few days, there has been a topic of past and present comparisons going on in the Hive, which has me thinking a lot about our previous lives compared to our current lives. Or rather, they make me avoid thinking about it. 😊 I know there are people for everything, and age alone doesn't have to determine a person's preference for something. But I still think I belong to the previous generation that prefers paper books to e-books.
All the arguments you present are valid, but in this day and age, aren't books even a form of escape from the screens we're in front of all day anyway?
Btw, please add the source link for your first picture, you probably forgot it.

😁😁 you are just like my sister, she prefers paper books, I had to convince her a lot before she started reading ebooks, and sometimes I feel she is old-fashioned. I must confess though, whenever I visit someone who has book collections, I can't help but fall in love with their collections, nothing can really beat the smell of new books and the beauty of cover pages, but I prefer ebooks because it allows me to read a book without going to the book store😁😁.

I guess they are. Books help us escape from screens, especially these days since almost all of us are glued to screens but then again ebooks give us more options of books to choose from. Paper books as fewer side effects but I guess am too much of the newer generation that is addicted to ebooks😁😁

Thank you so much @soulsdetour I thought I added the link and going to do that right away, !luv

I am a living testimony for wanting to read a book because of its cover. Ebooks are good but some would still stick with the paperbacks.

Same here, the cover of a book help me select a book at times. Both are good though, but ebooks give more option of books to choose from

I think one thing that hooks children to books is the pictures in the books.

Yes, even now sef.. I still prefer books that have pictures 😂

Images create an impression on the mind faster than words.

While reading for exams, I prefer going to YouTube to watch simplified videos... and I use them instead of reading bulky notes... well, I use both sha...

I read everything and anything I can lay my hands on.

Na wa oooo 🥲🥲🥲🥲

I don't envy you... cos I don't like reading 😂😂😂
But most times, I have no choice 🥲

But it's good oooo

Ebooks make life easier... you can carry pdfs in your flash that contains a whole library.... and you can easily access them, unlike carrying like 10 ghana must go bag... lol

Dreemport pushed me here..

Yes, even now sef.. I still prefer books that have pictures 😂

So you are still keeping this habit 🤣🤣🤣

Images create an impression on the mind faster than words.

So true, we don't lose what we learn through images readily unlike reading, where we tend to forget things after sometimes. I love YouTube, I also use it when reading, makes things more simplified.

I don't envy you... cos I don't like reading 😂😂😂

🤣🤣🤣, not everybody likes reading. Reading is my favourite hobby, you should have seen me when I show off about the things I read. One time I met someone who read Akin Alabi's book, omo, come and see me dropping lots of energy as I was discussing the book, everybody in the bus was just looking at me.

Ebooks are the best, 10 books on one phone, makings reading more interesting.

hehe I laughed at the 10 ghana must go bag comment 🤣

I used mindmaps to study - got through University that way! And that is a way to present the mind with images which makes things easier to remember too. So, yes, I completely agree with you - whilst I am quite happy reading for leisure without pictures or images !LOLZ I do enjoy them as a useful tool for when I am studying! Loved this comment! !PIZZA !ALIVE

It's so funny how different people are. I just read a post titled "BRING BACK OUR PAPERBACKS" and then here you are confessing your love for e-books, haha.
Oh well, the writer did well to point out that the latter has advantages... well your post says it all.

I love to read anything and everything I come across out of curiosity, but I never finish. Time is a luxury, and even more so when I'm reading randomly. Oh well, kudos to your mom.

Cheers!

Some people will always stick with paperbacks. I do like them but I will always prefer ebooks.

I love to read anything and everything I come across out of curiosity, but I never finish.

I guess you are busy, but you should try finishing some books, you never know, the better part might be towards the end. Am grateful to my mom for her effort in building my reading life

Right right.

Busy is almost an understatement, but yeah I think about that too, the 'end' possibility. Oh well, I'll put in more effort.

Cheers!

I love hardcovers for nonfiction, autobiographies, and books that mean a lot to me (whatever the genre)... even soft covers for books that mean a lot to me... nothing like holding a good book in your hand traditional style, turning the pages, sighing as you close the covers at the end of a wonderful soulful read. For general reading... I love my kindle ebooks... I can read late at night under the covers in the dark hehe without disturbing anyone. I feel they both have a place in my life today. I enjoyed reading from a young age too. It has always been a favourite gift of mine to give or receive: a wonderful book. !LUV !ALIVE

Covers are one of the things that attract us to books.

nothing like holding a good book in your hand traditional style, turning the pages, sighing as you close the covers at the end of a wonderful soulful read

I know that feeling most especially the smell of a new book.

can read late at night under the covers in the dark hehe without disturbing anyone

This is why I prefer ebooks, lots of convenience

I enjoyed reading from a young age too. It has always been a favourite gift of mine to give or receive: a wonderful book

That's wonderful, I hope I can do what my mom did for me for my kids. Books are wonderful gifts.
