Rejection is another way to re-direction

every time I thought I was being rejected from something good I was actually being redirected to something better.
-Dr. Steve Maraboli

Oxford languages define rejection as:

  • the dismissing or refusing of a proposal, idea

  • the action of spurning a person's affections

Rejection is not limited to specifics areas in life, in fact rejection occurs virtually in all fields of life. Rejection occurs in relationship, businesses or even competition, we come across rejection at one stage or the other in our lives.

I have been rejected lots of times but the one that struck me the most, maybe because I was still at a tender age and had yet to know extreme rejections. It happened after I finished secondary school. JAMB is the entrance examination we write in Nigeria to get accepted into a university.

A year after high school I wrote jamb and scored 240. I was so happy because I score above the required marks for my preferred university, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. Each University also has its entrance exam that you must write to get selected by the school. I prepared so well for the post-JAMB exam. I had to travel to Zaria from Ilorin but I was not discouraged by the long distance.

The day I wrote the exam, I fell in love with the school even more because of its buildings, (naive little me if only I knew😆😆). I scored 68 on the exam and when my points were calculated, I was so sure that I would get admission. I went home and waited for the admission list. The first admission list was released, I checked but no admission for me. I kept being hopeful about the other list, but alas all the admission list was released and I was not offered admission. I cried my heart out, I felt rejected by the school and life. I cried every day.

My best friend got admission to her school and I felt left behind in life, I became depressed. When my mom saw what I was going through, she had to sit down and talk with me, she told me that rejection happens in life but I should not let it weigh me down. After, that I decide to deal with my rejection.

The first thing I did was to accept that I was rejected, not because I was not good enough but because it was not yet my time. Then I went online and read about other people's rejection stories and how they excel after multiple rejections and I kept telling myself that if they can do it so can I. And that was how I slowly overcame the sad feeling that came with the rejection. The following year I rewrote the exam but picked the university in my state and I was offered admission

Nowadays, I still have rejections but I refuse to let them weigh me down. Rejection will always come but how we handle it matters. We should never be discouraged by rejection but rather we should see it as a way of learning, a way of becoming stronger and a way of becoming a better version of ourselves.

School rejections are very painful especially when you had to read so much for the exams. Well, like you said, maybe it was because it was not your time and may be the school won't be good for you because you did really well in the examination.

I'm so glad you could listen to your mom's advice and also read from others and become a better person 😊🤗.

First of all, I love the quote by Dr. Steve. Rejection can happen in two ways, either a positive way where it leads you to something great and in negative way where you feel things would show up in the best way again but we need to understand that rejection will happen but it is how we handle it that matters.

Just as in my place, we would always say, when one door closes, another will open. This can happen when we believe that God is always there for us. And most importantly, being rejected doesn't mean we aren't good or fit but just that it's not yet time.

You are absolutely right, rejection is in two ways but our mental state towards rejection matters the most. Faith in God, also help us deal with rejection.

The fact that you handled the rejection quite well even at that tender age gives me a hint of how intelligent you are.

School rejection is something else, seeing your mates leave for school while you are at home must be disheartening but it was just a matter of time.

Some rejection happen for positive reasons and not just because we aren’t good enough.

Naija na scam!

The University acceptance system is something mere mortals cannot comprehend with mere physical eyes. Even after having a good JAMB score, Good WAEC result, Good Post Jamb score... even settles scores with your village people....

The school will coman start their own wahala...

Worst still, the preferential treatment they'll give indigenes or northerners, such that someone with 111 Jamb score will even get admission.

Omo!!!
It is well

I'm glad you are better and you fought the rejection...

I swear....

You get am, their selection criteria is never clear. It saddens my heart when I see people apply yearly only to get rejected despite making the cut-off point. I hope the university system becomes better.

Thank you for reading my post....

Very good... We all will face rejections but letting them weigh us down is what will hinder our progress. Instead, we use them as a drive to achieve our aim.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

I can relate to this, it is quite hurtful when you think you are on the right part, but something makes you go else where.
