BATTLE MAGE SECRETS Weekly Challenge! - Fire & Regret Ruleset

Hi Guys! In this post we are exploring on another Splinterlands ruleset. The ruleset we are focusing on is Fire & Regret.

In a Fire & Regret, enemy units that attack with ranged attacks will receive damage back.

Damage returned is equal to damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up.

Ranged attack units with the Reflection Shield ability do not take damage from reflected magic attacks while Amplify ability increases damage.

Naturally, players will avoid using Ranged units in a Fire & Regret ruleset. However below is quite an interesting Modern Silver ranked battle whereby I am forced to use Ranged units in a Fire & Regret match. The match restriction is as followed:

Fire & Regret and Going the Distance with a max mana of 14. Only Water, Earth, Life and Dragon splinters are allowed in this battle. The Video for the Full Battle can be seen here:

TEAM SETUP:

Splinter	Mana Cost	Position	Reason
Quix the Devious	4	Summoner	The only summoners I can think of that works well in a Going the Distance ruleset is General Sloan from the Life splinter and Quix from the Dragon Splinter. I went with Quix as Quix has an additional -1 Speed ability in addition to its -1 Ranged damage to opponent ranged units.
Venari Marksrat	3	1st	I placed Venari Marksrat in the 1st position for its Martyr ability.
Naga Assassin	2	2nd	Naga Assassin in the 2nd position so it can gain the Martyr ability and gain even more speed and health. My Naga Assassin has Backfire and will reflect damage back to the opponent unit if the opponent misses. So now regardless of whether my opponent hit or miss my Naga Assassin, it will be hit back with ranged damage.
Venari Crystalsmith	4	3rd	This is my healer to keep my Naga Assassin alive as long as possible.
Total Mana:	13

Opponent Lineup:

My opponent went with Quix as the summoner and Venari Marksrat as a sacrifice pawn. At the back was a Gargoya Devil which has Close Range. Not a bad lineup so lets see how it went.

End of Round 1:

My Naga Assassin and Crystalsmith took out the opponent Venari Marksrat which in turn boosted up the opponent Gargoya Devil. The boosted Garyola Devil had 2 Shield, 3 Ranged Attack, 3 Speed and 4 Health. It then proceed to kill off my Venari Marksrat but lost its shield to Fire & Regret's reflected back ranged damage. My Naga Assassin, on the other hand, has its speed boosted to 5.

End of Round 2:

The opponent Gargoya Devil missed its attack and was hit with 2 damage due to the Backfire ability of my Naga Assassin. My Crystalsmith then healed back my Naga Assassin to full health (5). End of the match for my opponent.

End of Round 3:

My opponent Gargoya Devil hit my Naga Assassin this time round but again was hit by reflected damage due to Fire & Regret ruleset and died.

KEY STRATEGY
This is actually a weird ruleset combination right off the bat. On one hand, I have Fire & Regret which penalized ranged units. On the other hand I have Going the Distance which means I can only use ranged units.

To survive such a match I have to rely on other ability like Healing to increase my lineup survivability and Backfire to for more damage option without facing the Fire & Regret's reflection damage.

SUMMARY
In a Fire & Regret ruleset, do not use ranged units if possible. However if forced to like me, you can considered using my tactics above.
