Prioritizing Mental Health; Key To Boosting The Mind Capability.

The issue of mental health is one of the neglected aspects of health in many underdeveloped countries and Nigerians is not excluded. People are facing lots of challenges in the world today that can easily make them get stuck with mental health problems and due to the negligence of countries in that field, the affected people don't get the proper attention and things escalate for them.

We live in a messed-up world where people struggle with almost everything. People struggle to get educated, getting a job is difficult and when they eventually do, the salary is not close to something manageable. Personal and family bills here and there, societal pressure, work stress, and many other things pile up these mental issues until it reaches a breaking point.

The saddest part of mental health is that people seek terrible methods to get out of their mental health crisis and it destroys them. A few months ago, I was talking to a guy somewhere around the farm.

He is young but smokes a lot. I don't know what got over me that day and I tried talking to him about his addiction. He laughed at me and said, "Bro, just thank God for your life because you are doing okay. A lot of things are happening, most especially "bills" and when my head is full, I smoke".

I asked what bills he was paying and it was just about him. I poured out my challenges to him and asked him who needed to smoke more.

He didn't know what response to give me and we burst into laughter. I told him ways of handling mental stress but things have gone past that level for him. While seeking comfort from smoking, he became an addict in the process.

How is smoking a solution? The alternative many youths take to solve their mental health issues is the reason why we have many insane youths on the street.

I am one of those who place so much importance on mental health and have been able to keep things in check for myself after reaching a breaking point sometimes ago. It is difficult combining keeping one mental health stable and surviving in this world we live in.

The bible says that the kingdom of God suffereth violence and somehow, we are experiencing that violence pro max on earth. Sitting in traffic for hours daily, and facing challenges at work and home is enough to tamper with our mental health but it's important that regardless of all that, we have to maintain a good mental balance so that we can keep coping and surviving. It is only a sane mind that can do reasonable things and therefore to overcome whatever challenge is stressing us up mentally needs, we need to keep our mental health in check.


Keeping our mental health in check might look difficult until we are familiar with the routine and it requires understanding our body systems. I took time to study my body and was able to come up with a flexible routine for myself.

  • Sleeping adequately is one of the ways I go about keeping my mental health in check. There is moderation to it because when it gets too much, it affects me also. I don't deprive myself of sleep because doing so renders me useless and no matter how long I stay trying to cope, it leaves me very unproductive.

  • I take a day or two away from the busy social world to clear my head when I am feeling stressed. This happens mostly on weekends, I do things that don't require me to think excessively, things that I enjoy and it helps me refresh myself. These activities involve watching football, cooking, playing video games, and others.

  • Hanging around nature once in a while also helps, I don't do it often but whenever I feel like the other routines are not working, I visit nature and spend some time there.

  • There are quite a lot of people who don't understand the things that go through our mouth don't only affect our physical health, they have a huge impact on our mental health as well and because of that, I pay attention to the things I eat. Our physical and mental health works together, and when one is down, it is difficult for the other to carry on alone. I have a few allergies so I abstain from some food and always made sure that I eat healthy meals.

  • I try not to overthink because it's impossible not to think but it has to be done moderately. I make sure that I abstain from situations, activities, or events that will affect my mental health negatively.



There are a lot more ways of keeping my mental health stable and like I said earlier, it has to do with understanding ourselves. What works for me might not work for another person so knowing what your body wants is very important.

Our mental health should be every human priority and handling it the right way will help us boost our mental capability to its best.

Seriously things are happening in this world and all we can do is to give thanks and do things to stay balanced so we don't hurt ourselves. When I see things are turning somehow for me which affects my mental health, I sleep and also stay away from online activities because why, I cannot kill myself. Lol

Thinking about things too much normally have a terrible effect on us, there are some things beyond our capability so it's better to just let them be and focus on our mental health.

Not everyone understands that really and they ignorantly tamper with their mental health just with their intake.

Understanding both will help us to pay attention to food that might affect our mental health directly or indirectly.

Lol I laughed when I read that story about the guy you talked to about his addiction, it dawn on him that he was the cause of his own problem... Too bad, it will be very hard for him to give that life up.

Your ways to keep your metal health in check are almost same as mine. It's very important we have our mental health as a priority too, many are losing it out there 😥

You are right, a lot of people are losing their sanity to mental health issues and it is hard for them to quit the path they are threading because of addiction.

Our mental health should be of paramount importance to us as content creators, as a man can be judged through his mentality. When generating content, we should try to stay sane as possible.

By staying sane, we should learn to avoid competition, expect less, appreciate the little and remain consistent while we hope for better days ahead.

Things are happening and people are going through a lot. The thing is drinking or smoking doesn't help you get rid of your situations. Visiting nature always works for me and I just listen to music for some time to help me get my mind off of some problems to solve.

Mental health is important like physical health but in an overpopulated country, very few people think about mental health. I think you might notice that in recent times the number of suicidal attempts is increasing and mental health is the main issue there.

The challenges we face in many underdeveloped countries is a great cause of mental health while it is a different case in developed countries.

Above all, mental health cases shouldn't be taken lightly and it's really bad many of the people going through these have to struggle with it on their own and the fact remains that we place so much importance on physical health and not mind the mental part of it.

Well, mental health is not only an issue in underdeveloped countries but also in developed countries, but the rate at which they place significance on mental health differs.

Taking break is usually effective for those who discover that they need it, for some people they work till eventually they fall apart, I think companies needs to put in place a policy that evaluate employees mental health and stability, in order to allocate compulsory breaks to employees.

You are right about it being a general problem for countries but in developed countries, people have access to counsellors, there are different group that can help you work in mental health but here, most people have to deal with it by themselves.
