The Soup for the Season.
It's been a while and I miss sharing my time in the kitchen as my entry for the Hive learner creative Sunday initiative.
Not participating started with being busy, my Sunday got really occupied for some time now. I was thinking of finding time to get back on track when my phone got damaged, I was inactive for a while.
Today, I returned from the farm around 6 am and it was cold. The electricity issue isn't helping matters so I had to pass the night at the farm just to ensure I change the pond water. When I was leaving, I thought of treating my cold with something I haven't done in a while now.
I bought one catfish from my farm and decided to make the popular pepper soup from it, I completely forgot I need the pepper soup powder which I can't get on a Sunday.
I didn't realize it until I killed the fish so I decided to just do the soup with the things that were available at home.
It's the season of cold in some parts of the world and I think learning this will give people abroad another option for treating or putting the cold under control.
Pepper soup is a traditional and medicinal soup for me and I guess the name originated from how spicy it is. It can be prepared with fish, beef, and even fruits depending on what you like.
I prefer catfish because of the taste and how easy it is to devour it when properly cooked. This soup served with yogurt can take you to the next level of enjoyment, it is always super delicious.
- Chili Pepper
- Red pepper
- Smoked fish
- Basil leaves
All the recipes that demands washing must be done properly, remember eating healthy is paramount.
How I prepared my pepper soup.
- I poured about 3 cups of water into the pot and allowed it to boil for two minutes.
- I added the sliced onions, turmeric, and ginger. I allowed it to boil for another two minutes.
- I added the cowskin and shredded smoked fish as well, it cooked for a few minutes also.
- I added the sliced plantain, all pepper, and seasoning. I stirred it properly and allow it to cook for another few minutes.
- The catfish was added second to the last because I can't stir the soup once the fish is added.
I created space for the fish and place them in a position where the sauce will find its way into the fish. I cover it and allowed the fish to cook for about 5-7 minutes again.
- Lastly, I added the basil leaves. Adding it earlier is not my style because I don't like overcooking my vegetables.
And voila, my catfish pepper soup is ready.
Aside from the awesome taste, my soup is very medicinal. Ginger, Tumeric, and Basil leaves are all herbs and they will be doing a lot of job in your body especially with dealing with colds.
The catfish is a big source of protein and you definitely need that for your body. Plantain can be replaced by yam, potatoes, or anything of your choice. I love to use plantain not just for the taste but because it is rich in vitamins and also serves as an antioxidant just like the herbs mentioned earlier.
Using my exact recipe gives you fun and treatment when you eat, feel free to try this as well. It is easy to prepare, cheap, and not time-consuming.
