What would you give up to go back in time?

Today I feel a little bit nostalgic. I've been thinking a lot lately about how things changed since I've grown up.  In 1976 the first television show aired in South Africa.  I was five, so we grew up playing outside and we had no worries.

When we are little the only thing that we want to be is grown up, but now that we are, we wish that we could go back.

I grew up in a small safe town. I loved school and I had plenty of friends. We lived close to each other and we used to ride our bicycles in the afternoons, (without helmets) without anyone worrying about where we were going, because we had rules, and we listened to our parents. We had a specific time to be at home, so we went home without any complaints. Our parents always knew where to find us.

I grew up in a time where we didn't have television in South Africa so we had to keep ourselves busy and we never said that we were bored. We didn't have cellphones, computers or any of the technology that we have today, and we survived perfectly well.  I think I was in grade eight when we got our first computer.

The closest thing to technology we had were Walkman's and radio's. I remember sitting on a Sunday afternoon recording the top twenty music hits, and it made me angry because the broadcaster used to talk for the first few seconds when a new song started, and then you had to rewind the tape and forward to get to exactly the right spot to cut out the voice of the broadcaster. Gosh, I must sound ancient but I'm actually only in my forties.

We played seasonal games at school. At certain times everyone would play with marbles, until the next new craze came along. One of the biggest things that fascinated me most were the Rubik's cube, and we spent hours playing with that little cube trying to get all the colors together. I even had a neat trick where I used a spoon to take the block apart and then put it back together perfectly.

We were very smart if we had a hands-free game console. I remember I had Donkeykong 2 and I played for hours and hours just to get that little monkey to jump over the barrels.

Our biggest friends were our family members and we used to play outside in the mud, building little farms with plastic toys in the flowerbeds and we were happy.

We were not worried about anything, and now we worry about everything!

I would give up a lot of what I have today, to just turn back the time, to live in a simpler time when life had less stress, and more fun.

Would you be willing to give up technology to go back in time?

Those same thoughts cross my mind often and I would give up much to return to simpler time.

Technology was supposed to simplify and enrich our lives but instead it has robbed us of much of our humanity, morals, and health. Not to mention the control of our children, who learn things much earlier than we would liks.

It certainly is a double-edged sword.

Oh you pretty much sum up the disaster of life now, pretty much the same as if I knew what I did now I would have done things differently. Life is just a mystery to me sometimes....

I suppose I have a pretty healthy cross section of both sides of the spectrum, but I would wish that for Jude though. Life is crazy pressured for kids these days and it's so wrong... they barely even get to be children.

Hey @jaynie! Yes, that is the sad part of life. I don't think it bothers the kids so much but if they only knew how it could be. You might want to listen to this and you are already living in the Cape so it will be so much easier for you...

My life is split before children and after children. I would never wish away my children so I would not choose to go back in time and yet I would love to be in my early 20’s again and regain my freedom 💭

I do agree with that though....I would not give up my kids for anything but I would surely love if they could experience life like we did.

Turn the clock back to being 9 years old again, in a heart beat! One big condition we need a time machine, since I would like to be running around barefoot, riding bike with my sons (who must also be age 9), always promoted being outdoors. Challenge them to kettie (slingshot) shooting target of bottles.

Sadly computers did arrive to change the way we live, make time put down digital devices, talk to each other. We can wish for yesteryear however too much would be altered, so we dream on....

How wonderful would that be....if it weren't for my kids I would have searched high and low for that time machine.

I remembered growing up, One thing that I miss the were times where I just go outside and play with my cousins and going out without looking for wifi. I think sometimes we just have to balance everything when it come to technology. Thanks for sharing this with us and have a great day

Isn't it scary that we have become so very dependent on WiFi? If my WiFi is off it feels as if I could go mad....I remember when internet started we used to sit for hours waiting with a dial-up connection, it was so slow, but now if WiFi is slow it just frustrates me.

Absolutely no, I know that we love our past because it passed, but we will hate it if come back again. We loved our past because in that we had no idea about obstacles of life.
All is about our recognition of life

Well you are right there....the past is the past so we just have to make the best with what we have now.
