Dejar volar a nuestros hijos, una difícil decisión. (Esp/Eng)

Greetings to the moms and dads of this wonderful community, I haven't been here for a while, but lately some situations have happened to me that have made me think a lot about how we face as mothers the decision of our children to leave home or even worse when the decision is to leave the country, as was the case of my eldest son.

I grew up in a dysfunctional family with a very absent father who died when I was 13 years old, from a very young age without realizing it my mother was very possessive of me, so much so that many times I was inhibited to go on vacation because she got sick right after I left, if it was manipulation or not I never wanted to judge her, I only know that my teenage years I lived in a kind of prison without bars, to go out with my classmates I had to fulfill a list of assignments, like a typical Cinderella.

For that reason since I was right I had made the decision that when I had my children I would love and take care of them without depriving them of making their own decisions, but I would always be there to guide them without pressuring them or imposing my own ideas, that was how they grew up being responsible for their own actions and the consequences that this would bring, I remember when Angel Manuel began to study the first day of class I stayed in front of the school with a friend in case he did not want to stay.

imagen2_2_

By that time he had just turned 4 years old and when he saw that my sisters were getting ready to go to school he told me - mommy and when I am going to go to school I am already big and I want to go to school with my aunt - in that same week I made the arrangements to enroll him in the same school where my sisters were studying, He looked like a little flea in front of his classmates who most of them were a year older than him, that day when he went out at recess he saw me in front of him and when he saw me he said - mommy what are you doing there, go home and come and pick me up later - those words are still engraved in my mind even though 26 years have passed since then.

After that day I could understand that this was me that I wanted my children to be able to face their decisions, the rest of his school life I also taught him that school assignments were his duty not mine, that I could guide him and maybe even help him but I would never do what was his duty, for this reason he learned that the most important thing was not a good grade but that this grade was the product of his effort, although he was criticized by some of my uncles for my way of proceeding, that was not a reason for me to back down.

When he was 7 years old one of my sisters-in-law and her daughters invited him to stay at their house for the weekend, he was very excited at first because one of his cousins had a video game that he loved to play, so the day went by and at 4 pm when my husband and I together with our youngest son were returning home, he tells us - mommy and daddy, he says - mommy and daddy, we are going to go home, he told us - mommy and daddy after I sleep, go with my aunt to the market and eat they are going to take me home, don't cry mommy - with a beautiful smile he gave me a kiss and together with one of his cousins he accompanied us to the bus stop and together they went to the market to buy some candy to share that afternoon.

That afternoon when he returned to my sister-in-law's house, his older cousin bathed him and gave him a snack and while he was eating the snack watching television he fell asleep, his cousin took him to bed and he slept for about an hour and a half, when he woke up my sister-in-law gave him dinner and when he finished he said - ready aunt you can take me home - my sister-in-law said - no daddy we will take you tomorrow, after you sleep and we go to the market, he said - no aunt I already went to the market with Ingrid, then I slept and ate, so I must go home, who is going to take me home. My sister-in-law did not know what to do with his reasoning, so she knew that there was a way to make him persist with the idea of going home.

So that night she had to make arrangements to get someone to take them to our house, because he was impatient telling her that if they did not take him I would be crying because he was not at home, so a neighbor hearing him talk told him that he would take them, for me it was a scare to hear her knock on the door, When I asked her why she had done that she told me - mommy I said I was going to sleep there and I slept, I said I was going to the market and I went, I also said I would eat there and I did, I had nothing else to do there, and I can't let my little brother sleep alone in the room, he will be scared if I'm not there with him.

¡imagen3_2_

When I heard him talking like a little man I was speechless, I just kissed him and took him and told him to get ready and go to his room with his brother, he was showing me that I could trust that he would be the owner of his decisions and that I certainly would not be the one to put a lock on his wings, with sports he was very indecisive, he practiced soccer, skating, Karate, in this last one he got bored when he saw that other kids who also practiced in other gyms (dogos) went to competitions and they only competed among themselves, After that he practiced baseball for 2 years, he had a promising future until for a mistake in a game the coach said a bad word to him and he felt offended, he went to the coach and told him "every morning I see my mom when I get up and at night before going to bed and today she is here with me, I don't need her to remind me because I always have her present - without saying more words he picked up his implements and left the stadium.

imagen3_3_

By that time he was 14 years old and did not return to the team even though the coach went to the house to look for him, he said no one has the right to offend another just because he is in a bad mood, as a coach is to help us grow in the sport not to be our executioner, even though we insist he did not return to practice with that team or with another, he only dedicated himself to study.

When he left high school it was another odyssey to look for a career that fulfilled him, he studied computer science, industrial hygiene, then he did a bakery course and finally 4 years ago he told us that he would leave the country, the news fell like a bucket of cold water, I never imagined that he would leave far from me, Although for work reasons or to take care of a sick friend he spent some time away from home, I knew that when the required time passed he would come back, but this time it would not be like that, he would leave without a return date, that day I felt that my heart was breaking in two, I was filled with mixed feelings.

imagen4_2_

That night when I went to bed and made my usual prayer I asked the Heavenly Father for guidance, to help me to know how to act before the news of the departure of my eldest son, after that prayer I remembered the many times I wanted to do some things and because of the limitations of my mother and older brother I could not do, at the same time I remembered my promise to myself that I would not be the jailer of the dreams of my children, so I just asked God to give me the strength to not let me defeat him at the time of his departure.

My prayer was answered in an unparalleled way, at that time I had a calling within the Church as president of the young women and just organized a camp for young people for three days, this activity had been postponed by various difficulties and when it was given was a week for the other, those days before the departure of my son I was busy between helping him buy things to take and attend to matters pertaining to the camp, were days that I went to bed super exhausted, just did the prayer fell into a deep sleep.

imagen5_2_

The day of the camp and that my son would leave came, the night before we played dominoes and cards as a family, when I went to bed he told me - mother thank you for letting me fly, I know it is not easy for you, you always gave us wings to make our own decisions and this time I need you to be stronger than ever, because I do not know when I will return, I do not want you to cry so tonight I will not sleep at home because I do not like goodbyes, tomorrow when I leave I won't be at home and when I leave you won't be either, remember that this is not a goodbye it's a see you later with no date to meet again - he kissed me and breathing deeply we both got him and he left, we were both brave not to let the tears that were about to come out of our eyes, we didn't let them come out.

When he left I could not contain myself and in the arms of my husband I let the tears out, for a while I was there remembering one by one his words, then we went to sleep to regain strength because at 6 am I had to leave to wait for the girls for the camp, I had a hard time getting to sleep, if I managed to sleep an hour or two it was a lot, when the clock rang at 5 am I got up, I washed myself and finished preparing the things I had to take when at 5:50 am I felt the door open, I was ready to go to the camp: 50 am I felt the door open, when I turned around it was him who was entering without saying words he hugged me and told me - I can't leave without your blessing mommy, I was outside for almost half an hour and when I heard my daddy tell you that you have everything ready I decided to come in - he hugged me and let a tear run down his cheek, after a few minutes hugging like that he told me - go now, don't cry, you are braver than me, I don't want to see you cry, so give me a smile and go - that's what I did, I got courage again and let him go, towards a life that was about to begin and with his own wings to fly.

imagen6_2_

Today it has been almost 4 years that he has been out of the country, in these years he has grown not in size but in wisdom, he had to learn to be alone and be his own agent in all things, take care of his expenses and the expenses of a home, today he is just starting his life as a couple, I hope that the blessing of God the father can bless them so that in this new stage of his life they can fly together and form a stable family like the one in which he grew up. I don't know when I will hug him again and give him a kiss on his cheek, but I am grateful for something that despite how difficult it was for me I was able to let him fly with his own wings.

I thank each of you who read these lines and if any of you are in my place or soon will be, it is not easy but not difficult either, the important thing is that each of us came to fulfill ourselves and as parents we can not put limits to our children, they have their rooms, their dreams and their goals, we can only help them to move forward by letting them fly when they want to open their wings.

Me has hecho llorar!

Saludos.
