Solnice Microbrewery, České Budějovice
If you wanted to travel across the Czech Republic and visit every craft microbrewery, spending an evening there, you'd have to dedicate over a year to that beer-exploration voyage. Such odyssey exceeds my time limits, yet during my two-day stay in the South Bohemian regional capital, I made sure to visit the two most renowned local breweries. For a bit more about the real Budweiser beer (the brews from this post technically qualify), feel free to peek into my previous post. This #beersaturday entry starts with the oldest church in town - the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a part of the Dominican Monastery. Regrettably, my tight schedule left me with no choice but to head straight to the adjected building of Solnice, another historical gem of stunning Gothic architecture that used to belong to the monastery.

Solnice, meaning "Salt House" in Czech, is one of the oldest buildings in České Budějovice. Constructed in 1531, it initially served as a monastery granary, then as a town guard armory, and ultimately a salt warehouse, which rendered its current name. Since salt is no longer scarce in the Czech Republic, the unique building sought a new purpose for decades. I recall visiting years ago when a friend performed in an alternative site-specific theatre performance there. If you wonder how spooky the place looked before a vast reconstruction in 2019, see this gallery.
Hned vedle je totiž Solnice. Jedna z nejstarších dochovaných budějovických budov pochází z roku 1531 a původně sloužila jako klášterní sýpka. Postupem času se z ní stala městská zbrojnice a nakonec sklad soli. Proto Solnice.

But let's move to the present. The microbrewery is a brand new one, opened in 2019. The brewing does not take place in Solnice but in the townhouse on the other side of the square - in this one. And then there's what I've decided to call the cerevisiae-duct. Cerevisiae is Latin for beer, and just as an aqueduct carries aqua, water, this one carries beer under the square directly into the restaurant. If I were British, I might call it a Beer Tube, but I like the classic way better.
Tady. Pod dlažbou pak vede pivovod, kterým je restaurace zásobovaná.

As I've noted in previous posts, microbreweries are usually the best places to eat, particularly outside Prague. Unlike many restaurants, they genuinely care about the ingredients, and not only when it comes to beer. No wonder Solnice was fully booked for a private event upon my arrival. However, knowing that my #beersaturday experience would be incomplete without sampling their brews, I mustered all my charm to convince the head waiter to let me in—on the condition that I sit in a corner, don't disturb anyone, and drink quick. Hence, I have only a handful of interior snapshots to share. But before we delve into the beer tasting, here are loaves of bread. You might wonder why. The bread you can buy in supermarkets here is commonly of poor quality. If you want a good one, you shop in an artisan bakery. As breweries tend to offer the finest meals, many started to bake their own. Should you encounter a Czech microbrewery during your travels, don't hesitate to inquire about their bread—I swear it's well worth it!
Vařit skvělé pivo a servírovat k němu jídlo z průměrných surovin by nedávalo smysl. Když budu sedět v koutě a šoupat nohama, totiž nerušit a pít rychle, můžu si pořídit svůj #beersaturday report.

The Beers
Belgian Blonde
Under a bit of time pressure, I decided to start with the seasonal special, which might not be available on my next visit. Plus, I have a soft spot for wheat beers, and the Belgian Blonde is a solid representation of the wheat ale style. It greets you with a mild yet distinctive aroma of orange peel, accompanied by subtle sweet undertones. The body is smooth, with hints of bitterness that briefly emerge, paving the way for spicy notes to shine. The fruity esters linger in the aftertaste, leaving a memorable impression. It's a fine example of the style, one that's not common here in the Czech Republic.

Solnice 12° Bohemian Lager
No beer review would be complete without sampling the quintessential Czech classic, the typical "dvanáctka." This one boasts a perfectly long-lasting foam (or so I imagine, as I had to drink quickly). The brewers seem to be following the current trend of generous hopping, evident in the dominant Saaz hops bitterness in both scent and taste. With an IBU of 44, it's no surprise that this beer leans towards the bitter side. However, amidst the hoppy onslaught, there's still room for sweet malty tones to make their presence known. The hoppy aroma lingers, though, dominating the palate. As a fan of bitter lagers, I thoroughly enjoyed it, although it may not be to everyone's taste.
Tahle recenze by samozřejmě nebyla kompletní bez dvanáctky. Ta má perfektní pěnu, která by určitě vydržela, kdybych nemusel pít rychle. Místní sládek ctí aktuální trend a chmelem tedy rozhodně nešetří. Typické žatecké tóny pivu dominují, a projevuje se to samozřejmě i v hořkosti.

Solnice 11° Bohemian Amber Lager
Amber Lager seems to have fallen out of fashion. Or perhaps it's just due to my beer trips timing. Nonetheless, the third and final beer has a distinct malty aroma, with notes of hazelnuts and roasted malt, reminiscent of caramel and dark chocolate. These sweet tones provide a backdrop for a touch of herbal bitterness on the palate. To my surprise, the aftertaste melts all these elements, leaving me pleasantly overwhelmed. However, I must admit, the pace I consumed them may have played a role in that sensation.

No vida, tak alespoň něco :)
Greetings friend, the place is very nice despite the restoration I saw that the original structure was maintained without causing significant changes and it looks really good, a shame that you couldn't taste it I totally tried the beers but I think you were lucky, the bread looks great although I don't have much experience on the subject, in my town there is practically only one type or two
I've tasted the beers and the place is nice because of the restoration, not in despite of it.
I use the translator, in summary I praised the restoration work, I am sorry for my terrible translation
Oh, I see.
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Jízda vlakem z Madridu do Barcelony trvá dvě a půl hodiny.
"Jižní expres" jede z Prahy do Budějic hodinu čtyřicet, rychlík Vltava dokonce dvě hodiny...
:)
I salivated with these beers!! I really need one of that ! I liked how the belgian blond is a bit "cloudy" . Also I got curious about the bread. I agree with you supermarket bread usually is without any taste...so local bakeries provide a better choice!
Craft beer and artisan bread is an amazing combo, however simple or plain it may look ;)
Thanks for stopping by :)
A good brad with some good quality olive oil! good combination with beer =)
:)
If it only opened in 2019, it means this factory has only been running for 5 years and I also like the atmosphere there.
It's not a factory ;)
I have not been thrilled about lager for a while and know how much of a pain in the ass the brewing process is with the different temperature stages. Still, these look like solid beers! One of these days man, I am heading to your region and we are going on a brewery tour!
Also, I figured out the hack to the @inleo temporary image issue (with diplaying them on hive.blog anyhow.) Draft up your post with images in https://hive.blog/submit.html then copy and paste the text in the Publish interface on Leo! BAM! Images AND huge rewards while supporting Leo.
Once you get to the Central Europe, it would be my honour to take you around and show you a bit of our beer culture :)) I guess you'd even be able to see Jágr still playing proffesional hockey, he owns a top-trier club and seems to never retire, regardless the show he had in Pittsburgh recently. We're the country of lagers and there are definetely some thait would please your spoilt taste buds ;)
I actually uploaded the pictures to Ecency for this one and then copypasted the text with them to Leo. It's weird that they're not visible :/
