Re-Organizing A New Canning Area On The Homestead: A Work In Progress

It's been a year and half since our third bedroom has been vacant (except for a few pieces of furniture) and during our self-quarantine (and having the help of Mr Golden D), I figured it was time to make use of the empty 14x12 room. I have the second bedroom as my grow (cannabis) and gardening room, but I was becoming overwhelmed with ALL my canning supplies. Empty jars, lids ans seals, my three large canning pots and pressure canner, the three dehydrators and just other various preserving, fermenting and canning items were ALL over the kitchen, mudroom and second bedroom. IT WAS time these all had their own space... together!

Midway through with the project.

One shelving unit came from the kitchen and has my somewhat working pantry items. Extra salts, homemade mixes (cream of everything soup, scalloped potato seasoning, gravy mixes, etc) and some of my canned goods. When in the kitchen, the shelf wasn't in the best possible location; as you should keep food preserved in clear jars in a dark, dry and an even temperature regulated space. This room is much better for those reasons as it has room-darkening curtains and is kept dry (no moisture from the stove and oven being used, etc.

The second shelf came from my grow/homesteading room where I stored my empty jars and miscellaneous canning items.

Before on the left. Almost finished on the right.

While I still have some work to do in here I am happy the heaviest and hardest part is done. Across the room from the shelves, I have a large dresser (image below- left) that the dehydrators, various canning items and miscellaneous odds-and-ends are sitting. And on the other wall I have some of my soaps drying and curing on the shoe rack I transformed into a soap rack (image below- right).

Like I said, I still have a lot of work to do in this room, but with the rain we've had this last few weeks, I was able to focus more time indoors and get more tasks done and extra organizing finished.

After I get this room done, I'll be moving my re-organizational skills into the grow/homesteading room and getting it ready for the upcoming gardening season and my current cannabis grow. I left the room a little discombobulated when I pulled the shelf out of there and moved things out of my way.

But for now I am pleased with the progress and how it's all coming together.

I can't wait until the addition gets done. I so need to re-order all my supplies in one place!
