THE AFRICAN MOTHERS BACK A PACIFIER FOR BABIES.

avatar

The mother's back is the best pacifier for African babies because of the close contact the mother have with the baby.
It also makes the baby feel so protected

African women often opt to carrying their babies at the back not just to make their hands available for other activities but also for supervised mobility and to comfort the baby and make them feel loved.

It is very comfortable for the baby as they are not only wrapped up in cloth but they are cradled when they start to cry.

Before I put to birth, I had already fantasized how I would look and how I would be carrying my baby untill I meet Mr reality🤣🤣he told me to calm down since I would be learning from my own experience.

My mum and sunshine 🥰🥰

One thing I told myself was that I would be using the baby carrier instead of the normal culture way of carrying babies here in Africa.

My baby was three months old when I carried him with his carrier to the bank. After all the day activities I went home and at night I couldn't sleep, I had serious chest and back pain.....many thoughts run through my head untill I finally find the cause of the pain which was carrying my (5.2kg then at three months) baby.

I made the decision to go back to my culture that is wrapping my baby at the back.
I felt less chest pain and was free to handle other things whenever he is at my back.

Although it usually cover my dress but my baby feel so comfortable at the back and it's very convenient for me.

This practice of wrapping babies at the back has been considered a premative way of carrying a child, it's has long been practised even before I was born.

Here are some benefits of back babies:

It help prevent cold during cold period. They stay warm at the mothers back

It help them sleep for a longer time at the back while the mother carry out some other task.

It all depends on your baby's weight and what you are comfortable with. I like both baby's carrier and wrapper.

Babies carried on the mother’s back is a big part of the African heritage and people seek to keep the practice flourishing from generation to generation.

What other methods of carrying babies do you know of or practiced?

In my country we do not use this custom, here the baby carrier is used forward and it really causes severe back pain and mothers hardly use it for that reason.

It seems more comfortable to me the way you do it, and as is customary in your country, this way of carrying babies can be seen in Asians who live in Venezuela, they carry their babies like this and it shows how comfortable they are They are on their mother's back, but I don't know why Venezuelans don't adopt this custom, it's an excellent idea for the comfort of both, your baby feels very comfortable, it was a pleasure reading from you, regards 🤗
