From Prada to Nada | My impressions and review of the film

For someone who loves crime dramas, maybe romantic comedies and fresh stories don't fit my profile, but the truth is that I enjoy them a lot, I find them super relaxing, it's that kind of movie that you decide to watch just to laugh and celebrate love.

Para alguien que ama el drama criminal, quizá las comedias románticas y las historias fresas no encajen en mi perfil, pero la verdad es que las disfruto mucho, me resultan super relajantes, es ese tipo de películas que decides ver solo para reírte y celebrar el amor.

Going overnight from having everything to having nothing can be very dramatic in real life, but when the film is a comedy its approach is usually very funny, as the screenwriters try to frivolously show what that precipitous change in social status represents.

Pasar de la noche a la mañana de tenerlo todo a no tener nada puede ser muy dramático en la vida real, pero cuando la película es una comedia su enfoque suele ser muy divertido, ya que los guionistas intentan mostrar frívolamente lo que representa ese precipitado cambio de estatus social.

Pobres Divas, or from Prada to nada, as it was also called, tells the story of Nora and Mary, two sisters, daughters of Mexican parents, born and raised in North America amidst the privileges of a wealthy family, surrounded by luxury and abundance.

En Pobres Divas, o de Prada a nada, como también la titularon, se cuenta la historia de Nora y Mary, dos hermanas hijas de padres mexicanos, nacidas y criadas en Norteamérica en medio de los privilegios de una familia pudiente, rodeadas de lujos y abundancia.

Motherless, they live under the care and pampering of their father, but their destiny changes after the sudden death of their father on his birthday.

Huérfanas de madre, ellas viven al cuidado y mimo de su padre, pero el destino les cambia tras la repentina muerte de su padre el día de su cumpleaños.

At the reading of the will they discover that there are no riches to claim, their father was bankrupt and they have only inherited his debts, so they must say goodbye to their idyllic world, leave their home in the privileged and exclusive Beverly Hills, and aboard a beautiful BMW move with their maternal aunt to a modest Latin neighborhood in East Los Angeles.

En la lectura del testamento descubren que no hay riquezas que reclamar, su padre estaba en bancarrota y ellas sólo han heredado sus deudas, por lo que deben despedirse de su idílico mundo, abandonar su casa en la privilegiada y exclusiva Beverly Hills, y a bordo de un hermoso BMW mudarse con su tía materna a un modesto barrio latino al este de Los Ángeles.

There they will have to reinvent themselves and learn the value of work to continue with their lives. For Mary it is a more demanding challenge than for Nora because she is much more frivolous and superficial, her sister, on the other hand, values opportunities more and is determined to forge her own future as a lawyer. They represent the typical cliché of the rich, dumb, blonde girl and the intellectual, sensible girl.

Allí tendrán que reinventarse y aprender el valor del trabajo para continuar con sus vidas. Para Mary es un reto más exigente que para Nora, pues ella es mucho más frívola y superficial, su hermana en cambio valora más las oportunidades y se empeña en forjarse su propio futuro como abogada. Ellas representan ese típico cliché de la chica rubia rica y boba, y la chica intelectual y responsable.

While one of them continues with her studies, the other makes her way into the labor field. One focuses on finding a way to regain the world that was taken away from her by looking for a partner who will guarantee her social and economic stability; the other humbly accepts her new life and strives to improve herself.

Mientras una de ellas continúa con sus estudios, la otra se abre camino en el campo laboral. Una, se enfoca en buscar la manera de recuperar el mundo que le fue arrebatado buscando una pareja que le garantice esa estabilidad social y económica; la otra, acepta con humildad su nueva vida y se empeña en mejorar.

Along the way, both come across love, although they don't see it at first sight, in Mary's case because she was looking for it where she shouldn't have been, and in Nora's case because it wasn't in her life plan to fall in love.

En el camino, ambas se cruzan con el amor, aunque no lo ven a primera vista, en el caso de Mary porque lo estaba buscando donde no debía, y en el de Nora porque no estaba en su plan de vida enamorarse.

The film has funny moments that represent the socioeconomic impact of the class struggle between rich and poor, although the truth is that the performances of these actresses could have been bolder to convey that cocktail of emotions, they lacked more spark.

La película tiene momentos divertidos de lo que representa ese impacto socioeconómico en la lucha de clases entre pobres y ricos, aunque la verdad creo que las actuaciones de estas chicas pudieron haber sido más audaces para transmitir ese cóctel de emociones, les faltó más chispa.

Now, something that I liked about the movie is that the film praises the traditions of the Mexican culture, to which they are foreign in the plot, to the point that being of Mexican origin they do not even speak Spanish.

Ahora, algo que me gustó de la película es que se enaltece mucho las tradiciones de la cultura mexicana, a la cual ellas son ajenas en la trama, al punto que siendo de orígenes mexicanos ni siquiera dominan el idioma español.

You have to see this movie without pretensions, understanding that it is a romantic comedy, of course, it is very fresh, funny, with a lot of Latin flavor, and as expected, with a happy ending. As I understand it, this movie has been adapted from the novel Sense and Sensibility, which has inspired many other cinematographic works, I have never read it, therefore, I could not give my opinion or create any point of comparison in this regard.

Hay que ver esta película sin mayores pretensiones, entendiendo que se trata de una comedia romántica, por supuesto es muy fresca, divertida, con mucho sabor latino, y como es de esperarse, con un final feliz. Entiendo esta película ha sido adaptada de la novela Sentido y Sensibilidad, que ha inspirado muchas otras obras cinematográficas, yo la verdad nunca la he leído, por tanto, no podría opinar ni crear algún punto de comparación al respecto.
