After reading @emiliorios's recent post, I was immediately curious to explore the HelpGuide resource he shared and see how we can begin to accept the present reality we are facing. This is especially important to me because I have children and elderly parents who are still alive, and I want to stand firm, with both feet planted in the here and now.

Here is his original post:

@emiliorios - Coping with and Overcoming the Pain of Tragedy—Reflections Only, No Lifeless Guides

This document discusses the impact of traumatic events and shows us that this is not merely a psychological theory; it is felt in the body, in our health, and in the daily lives of our communities.

HelpGuide’s specialized guide on coping with traumatic events reminds us that post-traumatic stress and constant anxiety profoundly alter our nervous system. We see this daily when prolonged distress manifests as real physical symptoms, demonstrating that emotional pain and physical well-being are inextricably linked when facing situations beyond our control.

When reality hits us hard, it is completely normal to feel the present become blurred and to have fear take root in our daily lives. Today, I want to understand those closest to me—my inner circle. Trapped by the fear of aftershocks in vulnerable areas like La Candelaria in Caracas, they are torn between attachment to their homes and constant panic. My parents even summoned the courage to visit my sister; while her apartment suffered visible damage, her workplace—a school—remains intact.

Recognizing that state of high alert, validating another person's fear without judgment, and understanding that everyone processes an emergency at their own pace is the first step toward offering support with genuine empathy, without minimizing anyone's suffering.

When trauma manifests in the body and daily routine

Resilience does not mean being immune to pain; rather, it is about finding a way to hold ourselves steady in the midst of the storm. A painful, close-to-home example is a teacher at my school who developed hyperthyroidism as a result of the current crisis—a clear indication of how the body processes the weight of emotional collapse.

Her situation is further complicated by the need to care for immediate family members who lost everything in La Guaira: a family with three children has taken refuge with her while searching for the rest of their loved ones, alongside another branch of the family that has entrusted her with two more children while they locate the final missing child, who is currently with another relative.

The first family group brought the children. Then the adults went to get the others. You try to find help for them wherever you can.

The burden of caring for five children in such adverse circumstances, compounded by her own illness, creates an incredibly difficult situation that we cannot ignore.

In light of this, guidance suggests that managing trauma requires re-establishing—as much as possible—small routines of order and physical care, and, above all, mobilizing external solidarity. No one can shoulder such a heavy load alone; it is vital to bring these cases to light in order to activate collection centers and networks of material and emotional support that can urgently alleviate these harsh realities.

The value of community and active solidarity

Uncertainty and communal anxiety can paralyze us, but they also act as a catalyst for mutual support to emerge within the spaces where we live our lives. Dear friends in our Hive community continue to face situations of deep instability, reminding us that digital platforms and collaborative environments are about much more than technology: they are sanctuaries of support and comfort. Finding spaces to highlight what is happening, channel resources, and offer words of encouragement allows us to transform individual feelings of helplessness into a collective force that provides companionship and sustenance.

The most genuine form of aid neither intrudes nor imposes; instead, it paves stable paths where vulnerable families can find a moment of respite amidst the chaos.

Building certainty in an uncertain present

WhatsApp Image 2026-07-11 at 10.53.59 PM (1).jpeg

How do we move forward in the present amidst such uncertainty? The answer lies not in definitive solutions, but in the ability to weave community networks that serve as a secure support system while we wait for calm to return. Even when the world around us seems to be falling apart, maintaining connections with others and acting with solidarity restores a small yet valuable sense of control over what we can change: the well-being of those around us.

Turning a blind eye to reality is not an option, yet letting ourselves be consumed by hopelessness prevents us from helping. Step by step—prioritizing mental health, self-care, and active empathy—we can become the anchor others need.

It may be easy to say, but we cannot face this in isolation.
