First Time I Got A Job

Welcome To My Blog

Hello friends, how are you doing? Thank you for visiting my blog today.

Years back we were children hoping we would become adults so we could work and earn a living. Now you're an adult all you want to do is just go back to being a child where you do not have to stress yourself trying to work to earn a living 😂.

Well I didn't don't know but my parents won't like the idea of us getting a job before you're done with college well I changed that.
Last year during the strike, the strike was to last about just 1 month which was a warning strike. To be sincere, 50% of the students were happy to at least let them rest for a month. I was in school for about 2 weeks and decided to spend the next two weeks at home before I resumed.

Two weeks elapsed and we heard the strike was shifted to two months. Well fear came and I still felt relaxed at home. That was the moment I found hive so I was just writing.
After the two months elapsed we heard 3 months strike, at that point I knew we weren't coming back to school that same year I had to start looking for a job.
Many places I applied to couldn't take me because I was a student and school could resume anytime. They don't want a short time person that after training might leave.

It got to a time I stopped telling them I was an undergraduate so I could get a job. I was told I was an SSCE holder. It was really hard for a graduate then now just a high school certificate holder.
I didn't relent though I was tired at home. Everyday just sleep, eat and maybe post on hive. I was getting fat and I didn't like it. Days to weeks, weeks to months and I started getting depressed.

I was also telling my friends and people around me that I was looking for a job, well I think recommendation works faster.
One morning I had a call from my friend telling me an aluminum office needed a secretary. I didn't hesitate to tell him I was interested, so he gave me the number of the boss and I called him and explained myself.
He said he needed someone urgently and if I could start that same day. Like a prayer answered I said yes and immediately took my bath and dressed to the office.

It was an aluminum shop that sold steel materials for the gate and staircase. My Job as the secretary was to make sure the materials are locked properly and sold if there is anyone who wants to buy. It wasn't a big salary though I was receiving about $15. For an undergraduate who might resume school anytime that was fair. It wasn't really far from my house.

I enjoyed my first job. It wasn't that stressful and I was close to my boss so he took me like his sister. I made a lot of friends during that period. Having the position of a secretary helped me understand how business is runned, the profits and losses. I also learnt a little about the aluminum business just in case I want to start it, it wouldn't be a big deal either.

I had to leave when the strike ended and school resumed. The job was just to keep myself busy at that time and not my main focus in life. My boss missed me when I was leaving but I didn't have a choice than to leave.
I don't pray for any strike that would make me want to work when I am not done with school.

Thank you for reading

I believe you were lucky because when we went on strike around last year August which lasted till November, I was not even in the position of thinking of looking for a job because everyday I felt we might resume anytime soon.

I guess you took advantage of the moment and make the best out of it.

That strike was a funny one, they continued to add one month until it got to eight months 😂. I would have graduated already but Nigeria happened.

You used your time during the strike well, I didn't. I was giving my mom different reasons why I can't work at some places, though I always help her stay in shop 24/7.

Maybe you were seeing money at the shop 😂
That's why you didn't bother looking for a job

Wow, you really took the strike to your own advantage. Secretary job is a very good one, that was my first job after I finish my NYSC, I love it. The job allows one to know and interact with lost of customers from different places

Personally, I don't like to be idle but be productive and find some work as well.
At least you got a taste of employment in the real world. Not all experiences result in a positive out outcome and people skills are the important ones to learn and use right from the start. And it pays to leave on very good terms with your employer.
Good luck in your studies @graciousvic
