The Children of the Corn is a 1984 supernatural horror film based on Stephen King's 1977 short story of the same name.

It is inevitable that when we refer to the literary genre of horror, whether in film or literature, we inevitably fall into a common place: Stephen King.

Many of his books have been taken to the cinema with mixed fortunes, in some cases with excellent quality products such as Misery, The Shining, The Green Mile, Carrie and others, while in other cases the result has been more ambiguous and, in some cases, disappointing.

It is not easy to bring to the cinema a work of the so-called "master of horror".

This story by Stephen King has had several film adaptations with slight variations.

This review corresponds to the film produced in 1984, directed by Fritz Kiersch and starring Peter Horton and Linda Hamilton.

As usual in Stephen King's books, the stories have a perfectly defined temporal arc, in this case it is set in 1975 and has as its starting point the somewhat deteriorated marital relationship between Mr. Burton and Vicky Stanton who travel to California in a last attempt to save their marriage.

The echoes of the Vietnam War in which her husband participated (with all the aftermath of human rights violations, torture, murder, etc.) have been implanted in the copy and there is no way for the husband to detach himself from the pathos that has enveloped him.

While they travel wrapped in silences and intermittent discussions they do not see a child that comes out of a field planted with corn and they run over him causing his death. Although after observing the victim they see that in reality he was badly wounded with a cut in his throat.

They go to the nearest town to report the incident to the local police station but discover that Gatlin is actually a deserted town, where there is no living soul. Burton leaves the car at a nearby campground and heads into town.

Between the woman's advice to leave the place and his curiosity that takes him back to his past as a soldier in Vietnam when he was looking for the gerrillas hidden in the jungle, Mr. Burton begins to investigate starting from the parish records in the church. And he discovers a disconcerting fact: the village is inhabited but in reality its occupants are none older than nineteen.

While the husband is making these inquiries his wife is abducted from the car and killed by a group of children. When Burton arrives at the place he is surrounded by the children and their spiritual leader Isaac who explains the phenomenon to him: twelve years ago a violent famine took hold of the town instigated by the so-called "god of wheat" who according to the story goes back to the Judeo-Christian god, who to placate it ordered the sacrifice of all men and women over nineteen years old because he considered them impure and corrupt and therefore deserving of death.

The children attack him trying to kill him but Burton, thanks to the survival techniques he learned in Vietnam, manages to elude them and take refuge in the same camp, while at the same time killing several of them to free himself. Surrounded by the corpses of his pursuers, he hides while the tired young men, seeing that the search is fruitless, gather in the church while they witness a mating ritual between two young men.

Mr. Burton, surrounded by corpses, becomes delirious and begins to remember the terrible moments he lived during the war in Vietnam. He begins to wander in the middle of the camp until he finds the remains of his wife's corpse, crucified and disfigured.

In a state of ecstasy and madness he begins to feel strange noises around him and when he turns around he encounters the "god of wheat" which is actually something similar to a man-eating plant that kills him.

The film ends with Isaac informing the remaining members of his group that, as a result of recent events, the "god of wheat" has become angry and requires an additional sacrifice, he has lowered the age of survival to eighteen, therefore those above this age must be eliminated.

The final sequence shows the group of young people on their way to the sacrifice.

The plot of the film is centered on two aspects inherent to the common life of the inhabitants of the United States.

On the one hand, the corn, an American symbol to the point of being a fundamental element in the production of the famous porcorns that enliven so many movie evenings. And on the other hand, the religious fanaticism that has unfortunately afflicted American society for decades.

However, it would be wrong to limit the criticism of the film to these two aspects, much less to circumscribe it territorially.

Instead, it can be interpreted as a warning against the danger posed by the religious fanaticism that has always plagued American society.

And this also leads us to the children's stories about hell and sin, or to the continuous messages of skillful demagogues -religious or not- the biblical rhetoric about blind obedience to the divine will. And to children as a last resort for the salvation of mankind.

To point out a sonorous column that evokes the different forms of sacred music.

separador-parrafos-para-cine.gif
