[ESP/ENG] Luces Rojas es una película que analiza el fraude o la genialidad de los poderes paranormales. / Red Lights is a film that analyzes the fraud or genius of paranormal powers. [RESEÑA/REVIEW]
Luces Rojas cuyo nombre original -en este caso bien traducido- es Red Lights fu estrenada con el nombre de Poderes Ocultos en México, por esa rara dicotomía que hace que los productores de cada país -salvo raras excepciones- le pongan el nombre que consideran más adecuado.
Recuerdo que el premiado film con Anthony Hopkins, The Slence of the Lambs que traducido al español daría El Silencio de los Corderos fue estrenada con ese nombre en España pero en el resto del mercado hispanoamericano siguió la directiva italiana que prohibió la traducción literal (Il Silenzio degli Agnelli) porque era atentatoria contra una de las familias más poderosas de Italia y con notable influencia en el mercado hispano a través de todas sus empresas.
Red Lights whose original name -in this case well translated- is Red Lights was released under the name Poderes Ocultos in Mexico, due to that rare dichotomy that makes producers in each country -with rare exceptions- give it the name they consider most appropriate.
I remember that the award-winning film with Anthony Hopkins, The Silence of the Lambs which translated into Spanish would give El Silencio de los Corderos was released with that name in Spain but in the rest of the Latin American market it followed the Italian directive that prohibited the literal translation (Il Silenzio degli Agnelli) because it was an attack against one of the most powerful families in Italy and with notable influence in the Hispanic market through all its companies.
Divagaciones aparte, hoy les quiero presentar la reseña de este buen film que cuenta entre sus protagonistas a dos actores consagrados de primer nivel como Robert De Niro y la siempre espléndida Sigourney Weaver y un actor joven que saltó a la notoriedad interpretando a Thomas Shelby en Peaky Blinders, ademáa de interpretar a interpretó al Espantapájaros en las películas dedicadas a Batman: estoy hablando del irlandés Cillian Murphy.
Luces Rojas trata sobre los fenómenos paranormales y las cualidades extraordinarias que se pueden desarrollar con la telequinesis, y también el mundo de fraudes y engaños que muchas veces los rodea.
Ramblings aside, today I want to present you the review of this good film that counts among its protagonists two top level actors like Robert De Niro and the always splendid Sigourney Weaver and a young actor who rose to notoriety playing Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders, besides playing the Scarecrow in the films dedicated to Batman: I'm talking about the Irish Cillian Murphy.
Red Lights is about paranormal phenomena and the extraordinary qualities that can be developed with telekinesis, and also the world of fraud and deception that often surrounds them.
La historia gira en torno a tres personajes: Simon Silver (interpretado por Robert De Niro), un -aratemente- no vidente que ha logrado desarrollar poderes telrpáticos de notable envergadura, Tomas Buckley (interpretado por Cillian Murphy), un físico que trabaja en una universidad, de notables capacidades científicas pero que en vez de seguir su carrera tiene la obsesión de perseguir a charlatenes y embusteros desenmascarándolos a través de sofisticados apoaratos que perciben sonidos ajenos al oido humano y Margaret Matheson (interpretada por Sigourney Weaver), su compañerade trabajo y también profesora que imparte clases en la universidad).
Buckley y Matheson investigan fraudes, verdaderos cazadores de embusteros y charlatanes que tratan de enriquecerse con el fenómeno del paranormal y la telequinesis.
Reciben continuamente llamados y se presentan con un sofisticado equipo técnico que detecta mensajes transmitidos por los colaboradores de los supuestos "magos" logrando desenmascararlos.
En medio de sus investigacionesse presenta después de una ausencia de treinta años Simon Silver un hombreque, en apariencia se hace pasar como ciego pero que en realidad no lo es, con grandes habilidades mentales, tratando de reverdecer viejos laureles y efectuar el clásica "doblar una cuchara a distancia", aparte de efectuar intervenciones quirúrgicas solo con las manos, sin instrumentos, y otras cosas por el estilo.
Tom insiste en desenmascararlo pero Margaret no está convencida ya que en el pasado tuvo un encuentro con Silver del cuál salió muy mal anímicamente ya que éste usó sus sentimientos para pedirle por qué seguía teniendo su hijo con vida atacado a un respirador artificial y no lo dejaba morir. Fue un golpe muy bajo del cuál Margaret nunca se pudo recuperar totalmente.
Tom sostiene que deberían investigarle, a lo que Margaret se opone rotundamente, porque cree que a parte de sus trucos hay algo peligroso en Silver.
No obstante los advertimentos de Margareth, Tom decide investigar a Simon por su cuenta y se presente en el teatro a una de sus funciones.
En el momento que está controlando los aparatos de audio estos explotan, salta la luz, se rompen las lámparas y el caos reina en la sala donde actúa Silver.
Tom con algunas heridas vuelve a la universidad y encuentra a Margaret al borde de la muerte víctima d eun infarto producido como consecuencia de revivir dolorosos recuerdos del pasado.
Mientras está dando clases una persona se acerca a Tom y le comunica que Margareth ha fallecido.
Totalmente fuera de control lleva a su novia a la casa de sus padres por miedo a una ventual represalio del "mago" y decide afrontarlo en su propio terreno: el terreno donde está dando la actuación de despedida.
Silver y sus secretaria que ya habían previsto las intenciones del joven lo hacen seguir por un guardaespalda que lo ataca en el baño y lo golpea duramente hasta casi matarlo.
Mientras tanto un grupo de científicos está analizando las pruebas a las que se había sometido Silver para demostrar lo autenticidad de sus poderes y llega a la conclusión que si bien no hay pruebas de fraude en muchos casos tanto hay prueba de los llamados "supervalores".
En la parte final ambos se enfrentan, uno desde el escenario y otro desde el fondo del teatro.
Tom demuestra que en realidad es todo producto de la hipnosis haciendo que un hombre que creía no poder bajar su brazo, en efecto, lo haga.
El caos invade el escenario con lámparas que explotan y otros artificios que los secuaces de Silver ya tienen preparados en caso de emergencia.
Cuando todo termina, los anteojos de Silver, el supuesto ciego están el piso. Tom agarra una moneda y se la lanza. Y ante la sorpresa de todos Silver la agarra al vuerlo desmostrando que ve muy bien.
Su credibilidad comienza a venirse abajo mientras Silver continúa a preguntarle: "Cómo lo has hecho"
Mientras se aleja una voz en off en primera persona va explicando que en realidad es Tom el que tiene poderes paranormales y que siempre lo ha sabido.
Sale de la hospital bajo la lluvia y cuando se mira la mano descubre que la lluvia ha cesado, una manera metafórica para demostrar y convencer al espectador de la confirmación de su poder.
Un poder que siempre ha rechazado y que le ha servido para desenmascarar tantos fraudes en su nombre.
The story revolves around three characters: Simon Silver (played by Robert De Niro), a -aratemente- no seer who has managed to develop telepathic powers of remarkable scope, Tomas Buckley (played by Cillian Murphy), a physicist who works at a university, of remarkable scientific capabilities but instead of pursuing his career has an obsession to pursue charlatans and liars unmasking them through sophisticated apoaratos that perceive sounds alien to the human ear and Margaret Matheson (played by Sigourney Weaver), his co-worker and also a professor who teaches at the university).
Buckley and Matheson investigate frauds, real hoaxers and charlatans who try to get rich with the phenomenon of the paranormal and telekinesis.
They continually receive calls and show up with sophisticated technical equipment that detects messages transmitted by the collaborators of the supposed "magicians" and manages to unmask them.
In the midst of their investigations, after an absence of thirty years, Simon Silver, a man who appears to be blind but in reality is not, with great mental abilities, tries to regain his old laurels and perform the classic "bending a spoon at a distance", as well as performing surgery with his hands alone, without instruments, and other things like that.
Tom insists on unmasking him but Margaret is not convinced since in the past she had a meeting with Silver from which she left very bad emotionally since he used her feelings to ask her why she kept her son alive on a ventilator and did not let him die. It was a low blow from which Margaret was never able to fully recover.
Tom argues that he should be investigated, which Margaret strongly opposes, because she believes that apart from his tricks there is something dangerous about Silver.
Despite Margareth's warnings, Tom decides to investigate Simon on his own and shows up at the theater for one of his performances.
Just as he is checking the audio equipment, it explodes, the lights go out, the lamps break and chaos reigns in the hall where Silver is performing.
Tom returns to the university with some injuries and finds Margaret on the verge of death, victim of a heart attack caused by reliving painful memories of the past.
While he is teaching a person approaches Tom and informs him that Margaret has died.
Totally out of control, he takes his girlfriend to his parents' house for fear of retaliation from the "magician" and decides to confront him on his own turf: the turf where he is giving the farewell performance.
Silver and his secretary, who had already foreseen the young man's intentions, have him followed by a bodyguard who attacks him in the bathroom and beats him to within an inch of his life.
Meanwhile, a group of scientists is analyzing the tests that Silver had undergone to prove the authenticity of his powers and comes to the conclusion that while there is no evidence of fraud in many cases, there is proof of the so-called "superpowers".
In the final part the two confront each other, one from the stage and the other from the back of the theater.
Tom proves that it is in fact all a product of hypnosis by making a man who thought he could not lower his arm, in effect, do so.
Chaos invades the stage with exploding lamps and other artifices that Silver's henchmen have already prepared in case of emergency.
When it's all over, Silver's glasses, the supposedly blind man, are on the floor. Tom grabs a coin and tosses it to him. And to everyone's surprise, Silver catches it in the air, showing that he can see very well.
His credibility begins to crumble as Silver continues to ask him, "How did you do that?"
As she walks away a first person voiceover goes on to explain that it is actually Tom who has paranormal powers and that he has always known it.
He comes out of the hospital in the rain and when he looks at his hand he discovers that the rain has stopped, a metaphorical way to demonstrate and convince the viewer of the confirmation of his power.
A power that he has always rejected and that has served him to unmask so many frauds in his name.

La película, en cierto modo, me hace recordar a The Prestige de Christopher Nolan con un argumento parecido aunque la anteior me pareció más sólida.
Cortés, el director, había alcanzado notoriedad con Buried (Enterrado), transformándose es una verdadera película de culto, aunque la taquilla no le haya sonreído de la misma manera.
En Luces Rojas se queda a mitad de camino no logrando despegarse de un guion con el que parece hacer malabares para llegar al final.
A pesar de no alcanzar la calidad artística de Buried no es un fiasco ni mucho menos. Es un aceptable producto cinematográfico que podría haberse mejorado en algunos aspectos.
Sobretodo considerando que si bien la película en ningún momento hace referencia, es evidente que el argumento se refiere a la vida del mago James Randi, un personaje canadiense realmente existido, que falleció hace exactamente un año, que después de actuar como vidente en sus inicios pasó a la vereda opuesta, a desenmascarar a los ilusionistas y los fraudes que normalmente cometen haciendo uso del paranormal.
En su libro Fraudes Normales es la encarnación del famoso mentalista Uri Geller.
The film, in a way, reminds me of Christopher Nolan's The Prestige with a similar plot, although I found the previous one more solid.
Cortés, the director, had achieved notoriety with Buried, becoming a true cult film, although the box office has not smiled in the same way.
In Luces Rojas (Red Lights) he is halfway there, unable to get away from a script with which he seems to juggle to get to the end.
Despite not reaching the artistic quality of Buried, it is not a fiasco by any means. It is an acceptable film product that could have been improved in some aspects.
Especially considering that although the film makes no reference at any time, it is evident that the plot refers to the life of the magician James Randi, a Canadian character who really existed, who died exactly a year ago, who after acting as a psychic in his beginnings went to the opposite side, to unmask illusionists and the frauds they usually commit by making use of the paranormal.
In his book Normal Frauds he is the incarnation of the famous mentalist Uri Geller.
