Passing By Rike Park And Enjoying the Beautiful Views and Unique Attractions of Tbilisi

rike park.png
Rike Park is a modern riverside public park in central Tbilisi, on the left bank of the Mtkvari River, anchored by the glass-and-steel Bridge of Peace that links the park to the Old Town. Opened in 2010 as part of a citywide riverfront renewal, the park includes landscaped lawns, contemporary sculptures, musical fountains, and the cable car terminal that rises to Narikala Fortress. Visitors commonly stroll the riverside promenade at sunset, cross the illuminated bridge for photos, or take the cable car for panoramic views of the city.https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g294195-d6925337-Reviews-Rike_Park-Tbilisi.html

After coming down from the cable car at Mother of Georgia, my husband and I continued our walk through Tbilisi. We decided to pass by Rike Park, where we hoped to find a taxi to take us back to our hotel. At first, we thought we were simply passing through on our way home, but as soon as we entered the park, I realized that this beautiful place deserved more of our attention. There were so many interesting things to see, and I could not resist taking out my phone to capture some photos along the way. One of the first things I noticed was a circular stone monument embedded in the ground, with Georgian script arranged along the upper half. I found it quite interesting because it was unlike the usual things I would notice during an ordinary walk. As we continued walking, we came across an artistic metal sculpture known as the Tree of Life. Its dark iron or bronze appearance made it stand out against the surrounding landscape. What fascinated me most was learning that its trunk contains 25 small doors representing different historical eras of Tbilisi and Georgia. The sculpture was decorated with metal leaves, acorns, birds, insects and tiny fairytale houses. My husband and I were amazed by how much detail had been put into this unique artwork.

We also passed several cafés and ice cream shops with outdoor seating. Some people could enjoy their drinks and food while taking in the pleasant surroundings.

Another attraction that stood out was a large white tethered helium observation balloon floating above the open park. It added something special to the view.

As we walked farther we found a calmer corner with stone benches, pebble beds and a wooden walkway with tall cypress trees. My husband and I decided to sit for a while after spending time roaming to different attractions. It felt good to rest our feet and enjoy the placid environs.

We also noticed some stylish sculptural chairs and benches made from stone and concrete. Their modern styles gave the park a unique character.

As we continued walking we passed a stunning landscaped area where a grey stone walkway curved gently through the garden. A prominent strip of red bark bounded the walkway. Dense evergreen conifer trees added a refreshing touch of green. The area was so peaceful and inviting.

We noticed two enormous curved structures with a metallic appearance. Their unusual shapes immediately caught my attention. They looked very different from the traditional architecture we had seen around Tbilisi, so I became curious about what they were. After searching for information, I learned that they are part of the Rike Park Music Theatre and Exhibition Hall, commonly known as the Rike Tubes. Their futuristic design made them one of the most distinctive structures in the park. It was fascinating to see how modern architecture could exist alongside the historical charm of Tbilisi.

We also encountered a bronze statue of former United States President Ronald Reagan sitting on a bench. What made it more interesting was the quote inscribed on the bench in both English and Georgian: "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction." I paused to read the words and thought about their meaning. It was a simple but memorable reminder of the importance of freedom.

Our walk through Rike Park turned out to be more enjoyable than we had expected. We had only intended to pass through the park to find transportation back to our hotel, yet we ended up discovering so many interesting sights along the way.

Yes, the park is really interesting. About the balloon, it had just come down from the sky when we passed by. We had seen it up in the air when we were still far from that spot, but I didn’t mind taking a picture of it anyway.😀
