3D-references for my painting series "Realignment"

I painted the first small version of "Realignment" in 2007 after experimenting with randomly distributed cubic structures in 3ds max. Here are some test renderings for the reference I later used for the painting.

It's both amusing and amazing how the medium can change the perception of the image. With the 3d ones I can "hear" the cubes coming together in my head (even though I have no idea what noise they should be making as I can't determine the material they're supposed to be made of). Meanwhile the ink drawing just looks really cool and surreal.
