Beauty is in the eye of the Baby Beholder

(Edited)

This is the worst photo of me that I've ever seen, and it is also the most beautiful.

I had gone into labor three days earlier, spending the first day and a half at home. My contractions were about 30 minutes apart, making it very challenging to rest. My sweet husband Steve did not understand that it was not time yet, he couldn't possibly.

I'm down on all fours moaning in agony, and every so often he asks, "Are you ready honey?" The bags are packed, he's ready to do his job and support me at the hospital.

My body isn't ready though. How do you explain that to a man who's never held a newborn or witnessed pregnancy? There was a lot of fear and uncertainty for him, and fairly so.

He was there with me when a doctor told me that I was only capable of having a surgical birth. This doctor did not tell me this because it is the popular opinion about people with "my history" in his field, it was based on policy. Hospitals in the US are fine-tuned businesses.

$ $ $

I had to search for a supportive doctor. Then it came to labor, and I realized the hardest part of the fight was only getting started. I heard this doctor over and over in my head, telling me that because I lost my first child after birth, my body wasn't capable. It would happen again. I found a new doctor, but the doubt remained. My resolve eventually became a minute-to-minute choice.

I went to the hospital in the last 24 hours, according to the monitor I was having a contraction every 1-3 minutes for over 18 hours! It was brutally intense, and then I finally dilated! If only this was the victory it felt like, my body stalled again while pushing. As you can see in the photo above, my soul has left my body. I was 150% tapped out by the time I gave birth to my son.

I don't even know where the baby is to be honest, my body has gone numb from pain in this photo. I want to ask someone to help me nurse him, but I couldn't talk for a few more minutes. Yet I have a deep thought almost right away, "Thank goodness I was in a empowering birth space!"

YEAH, this was what I wanted.

Preg.jpg
I'm nine months pregnant here 😍

If you were to ask for me for some of the most beautiful photos of myself, I would pick these. They are honest, they show who I am, the love in my life. Even if my eyes aren't fully open in either! In the photo above my husband had said, "Honey pose in the pavilion, it's perfect!" while we walked along.

To me, successfully fighting for a birth that didn't involve an unnecessary surgery was one of my most gorgeous moments in life. When I heard my son scream, and knew that I did it... I heard my old doctor's voice again, except this time I could answer in my head.

"You don't know anything about what I am capable of."

After this experience, I can say that I would never ever want to be a labor and delivery nurse in the average US hospital. I couldn't participate in the way women are treated. I talk a lot about the corruption in the birth industry in this post, as well as my experience pursuing a vaginal birth after c-section, if you'd like to know more! I didn't mean to answer both questions, but if the shoe fits. 🤷‍♀

The question I meant to address for this week's Ladies of Hive prompt is:

Why do you think society places such a high value on beauty when it serves no functional purpose?
I think it's obvious that this is meant as physical beauty, not the kind of beauty I was talking about above. Let's face it, I probably can't sell you anything with either of those photos, but I could probably grab some dollars with this:

She's super pretty, and I bet many people would gravitate to this photo over the others. Why? Well, we have been trained to covet unobtainable beauty standards because it is profitable in my opinion.

This woman is probably a certifiable babe even without make-up. Yet, even all done up, they still air brushed her! No one looks this good, not even her. So why do so many of us try to appear this way? I believe because: we were told to.

You can never spend enough money to have the look, and even if you do somehow... the look would change. It's hard to be taken seriously or gain professional renown, but in our youth some of us think we can obtain a different accolade. To be a doll, the kind of woman that makes men freeze in their tracks! Little did I know, with modern internet connections, this too would fade in the future.

I don't even know what young women are trying to be now-a-days, because the look has become a whole 2-hour routine. I CAN'T. This idea that this fleeting thing is the end all be all. The truth is, you totally can stop people in their tracks with a number of things. They just don't often make money for a 3rd party. Prioritizing youthful physical beauty will always falter in the end.

That's the direct answer to the question from my point of view. I believe that empowered people are the enemy of corporations. You can't sell me anything to make me feel powerful or free, when I've found those sources in myself. Self-love kills unhealthy beauty standards, it stops me from thinking I need to be anything but myself.

I am my freckles and my chubby thighs. The gap in my front teeth that I hated when I was a teen. I'm the woman in the first picture, who has just made my husband a father. Who knows I have just pulled off the most beautiful thing he's ever seen, and it was bloody. It was real.

Such a wonderful response. Real beauty, is when we step into our power.
I ended up training to be a Doula because of my first experience birthing.
Birth is such big business now, it really pains me how women and babies are being treated.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful empowering birth story, warrior mama xxxxx

Doulas are 110% superheroes! My Doula Colleen was my lifeline, and my husbands! She helped him by being knowledgeable, so he felt at ease... in turn making me more at ease! Having that pillar of strength to remind you to breathe and trust the process, to offer counterpressure and comfort... it's one of the most incredible things one woman can do for another! So much love to you 💕

Thank you for this awesome comment! 🤗😊

I liked reading about your experience. My wife is pregnant. We are expecting the baby somewhere between the last days of August and the first days of September. I'm a little nervous, but I can't imagine how nervous she is or will be in the days and hours before the baby's birth.

I also think that the best thing for industries such as beauty or clothes is people with low self-esteem or that want to impress others.

Your post was shared in LeoThreads.

Congratulations! 😁 Your sweet baby will be here before you know it! 💕

Women's bodies have a way of guiding us through birth when we are offered a safe and loving space. I can feel the love you have for your wife in this comment, that is one of the best strengths for a mother during birth! Knowing my husband was by my side helped carry me through when I felt weak. 😊 I bet you'll be an all-star in the delivery room too!

Thank you very much for this great comment, and for sharing my post on threads! 😁

Well you certainly do know how to be honest. Thank you for a refreshingly real view of childbirth.

You are beautiful, so is Steve and of course your miracle of a son.

Thanks for this, which I read just before turning in. It's really good for me to end the day on a 'beautiful' note.

AWE! Thank you so much! 💕 A good friend encouraged me to talk more about my motherhood experiences recently. I think there's a certain pressure to seem as if you are totally put together after birth, to act as if only the cutesy parts of having a baby are real... and for lack of a more eloquent way to say it... that sucks! I eventually want to do a post-partum post too. 😁

There are so many things that are beautiful about being a woman, a mother, a grandmother. When I read the prompt I thought, well we should celebrate these things more! 😍 I'm so glad that this was a pleasant bedtime story for you, that makes me smile. Thank you for the fantastic comment! 🤗

A gap tooth is really cute, if you give it a chance! I used to cover my mouth when I smiled because I didn't want people to see it... Now I just smile broader !LOLZ I'm SO glad you've embraced it to, it is part of your unique personal beauty! 🤗

Thank you for this wonderful comment! 😁 !LUV

Is this story of your second labor, or have you had a third. I think that first photo is fabulous. I can feel the joy from here.

I had my first child in 2011, but she passed away shortly after. I wrote about Adele on her birthday this year here. My second birth was in 2018, my rainbow baby Thea! I talked about her birth briefly here, although that post is mostly about the pressure I faced to have a C-section with her (and I did).

My son was my first labor, my VBA2C baby! 😁 He will be two already in July 😱 it took some time to process his birth. It was traumatic, but also absolutely one of the best experiences on my life... isn't birth weird like that? 🤣 He was 9lbs 13oz, and somehow made it through that long labor with just some minor bruising! Ahhh I'm rambling about birth again... 😂😍

Thank you for your comment 😁

I've had three babies. The first was a csection, the next two VBACs. But that first VBAC was very difficult for me too, and he was 9lbs 1oz. Ripped me to shreds! Plus a lot of drama between the midwife, who wanted to cut, and the doctor, who refused to do so. But that third baby was natural. I gotta say, the C section was the easiest birth and, while I am happy to have had a natural birth, I understand women who choose to schedule a c-section.

It's a good thing we forget just how much birthing hurts, or we would never do it a second time.

Yours stories about your births are so compelling. I am glad I came across them. Thanks for putting them on the blockchain!

I understand women who choose to schedule a c-section.

I can totally get it to! I think it is very important for mothers to be able to make this choice for themselves, without pressure. Some women feel the most empowered in a totally opposite setting than I would, and I believe they should be accommodated and admired too!

It's a good thing we forget just how much birthing hurts

So true, otherwise I bet there would be very few of us left 🤣

Birth is such a beautiful thing, it makes me really happy that you read all of my birth stories! 😁🤗 Thank you so much!! ❤️💕

They are excellent birth stories! I love birth stories. Most of them anyway. Some are painful, as you know. Here's one of mine with a link to a previous one.

You had a very long labor and I salute you for being so brave and strong to bring him out normally. I happen to have witnessed a cousin who underwent the same length of labor (3 days) at the hospital and I cried on the inside seeing how she suffered all through and in the end, she had to go under the knife.

The photo of your birth speaks a thousand words and yes, it's beautiful.♥️

Prioritizing youthful physical beauty will always falter in the end.

Truth. Physical beauty don't really last.

I was so afraid that I would go the same way as your cousin, I remember the doctor asking me if I wanted to go into surgery, and I just summoned all my strength at that moment to keep going. I know this isn't always possible or smart though.

My son was not under stress on the monitors, and I was not in danger either. For some women I know C-section is what saved their lives or their babies! It's always so hard for me to talk about the politics of c-section in the USA because of that, I know it is a curse AND a blessing that it is so accessible here...

Your cousin is a very strong woman, and after hearing her story I very much wish I could give her a big hug. What a warrior woman ❤️

Thank you for this wonderful comment 😁🤗

It's amazing that you went through it triumphantly. And you are right too, it can be dangerous for the mom and the baby. It's great that you were both safe so I think you made a smart decision not to go into c-section.

Nowadays, it seems so easy for some doctors to recommend c-operation even when a mother can do it normally. We encountered some who would prefer if they don't go to hospitals when giving birth but it's just not possible.

Thank you too, so much 😍

👏👏👏 Go you!! I thoroughly enjoyed that read and you talk such sense in it. You really know what real beauty is and it aint some air brushed super model posing with a pout.

I think we have a responsibility to share photos of ourselves even if we don't think we are beautiful. I am not good at that. I edit myself all the time.

IT IS A FUCKING BEAUTIFUL picture of you in that first pic. I dont have one of me when I first saw my son - I prob would have killed anyone who took one. I'm infinitely grateful that my son and his girl took photos of themselves and the bub in the first few minutes and sent them to me straight away - it was such a privelege to be part of that in a small way.

The american health system is SO different to ours - we are far more pro natural births here, and even the birthing suites are set up with that in mind.

EEEK! I just saw this, sorry about that!!

Totally true, and totally hard. I never want to be in the picture, or if I was, I don't want to show it because it isn't the "right" picture. ugh.

Shucks, you make me smile!! I really appreciate that! 💚 Thankfully my Doula Colleen thought to snap a few, because I don't think anyone else would have dared to! 🤣

I hated both of these photos for a while tbh. Then one day I heard my daughter say something physically self critical... it was really random like 4yr thoughts tend to be... but it cut me really deep because I KNOW I'm self critical. It's become this whole thing where I'm learning to be nicer to myself from someone who like just figured out how to talk not all that long ago in perspective... lol

And the birth thing, ugh. Yeah, the US is like "how can we make this feel like a sterile procedure AS much as possible??" We have weird concepts like "coached pushing" here, what?! Stupid stupid stupid 😖

I'm infinitely grateful that my son and his girl took photos of themselves and the bub in the first few minutes and sent them to me straight away

😍 Post birth photos are amazing! When they are of your grandbaby... I can only imagine that's a whole new level of heart fulfillment and joy! 💚 AHHHHHHH!! Okay, I've accidentally written you a mini post, oops, HUGS!! 😁
