My journeys through the sub-continent: highlights Kolkata to Wagah
Hey, I thought I would publish the highlights of my travels through the Indian Subcontinent.
First off I have to admit to being in love with this amazing place, the people, the karma, sights and sounds. The chaos and the food all combine to make this in my opinion the most magical place to visit, visit indeed: several visits at least.
After a couple of horrendous flights and the over tedious bureaucracy of Indian immigration arriving late in the evening at my overnight accommodation only to find it was an alcohol free establishment, wonderful, off to bed.
The magnificent and iconic Howrah Bridge built by the British in the 1940’s spans the Hooghly River. Apparently it is illegal to stop and take photographs whilst crossing the bridge, and there are warning signs in place to that effect.
Taxis and flowers busy business outside Howrah Station.
Chai!chai! Chai! Next stop Bodh Gaya
After midnight when arrived at the “guest house” had to share my room with a few of those wonderful cockroaches scuttling around, it’s all part of life’s rich tapestry
Day break, boiled eggs and orange squash, next stop Mahabodhi temple complex, a place of pilgrimage to where the Buddha received enlightenment.
Peaceful
Next stop Varanasi the most stunning amazing ethereal place I have visited, after a 6 hr train delay, sitting around on Gaya station making friends with the locals
Varanasi by night is the most ethereal experience it matters not whether one is religious, spiritual or whatever. It’s so easy to get lost in the sounds sights and smells. Being amongst the Hindu worshippers enjoying the nightly ritual, worshipping Mother Ganga was amazing
Sunrise Varanasi early morning to catch worshippers bathing in the Ganges and to witness the funeral pyres burning. Wow just wow
Overnight train to Agra. If I’m being honest I found the Taj Mahal to be well very underwhelming packed with tourists.
Did take in Delhi at this point but I have kept it from here, to be posted in better detail in a later post.
Next the toy train to Shimla, what a contrast, from the heat to the cool, it was great up in the mountains.
And so to journeys end, Amritsar another jewel, in India’s crown, a daytime visit to the Golden Temple And in the evening the Wagah Gate, what away you finish my trip
JAI HO!
The bum scrum to get in was worth it, the pictures tell only half a story,it’s like one big party on the Indian side of the gate with music and dancing and colour

Some places you have been too there. Not been to India myself, there are quite a few Hivians (is the correct word), who are on this platform.
I’m starting to upload my travels, makes a change from DERP’s
This is really good, you have an eye for detail. Like the dialogue too, quite sardonic just like me!
When you write, you really do write!!! Honestly, you should do more of it! Great post
